Rules of Engagement

The rules of engagement are not only the principles of being engaged to a partner, but also the art of attracting a right partner. Getting a man to engage you and eventually propose, there are things, as a lady, you should do and things you shouldn’t. And speaking of that, pretence is not an option because the long term result of that is always like wishing to bury yourself alive. This, however, does not mean that a lady should spend her life planning on how to get a man propose. It is only necessary when situation calls for it.
This article is basically for women, and the reason is that a man, usually, is the one that makes the move for an engagement. And given that fact, he moves by choice. Now let us discuss some of the rules of engagement:
I give this first point for people who might get religious. In the Bible, Naomi instructs Ruth to wash herself and put on her best clothes and then to go out and meet with Boaz. As a lady, dressing up is an art of selling yourself. This does not apply to dressing to seduce or going out half-naked (I’m sure you know what I mean). Some dressing only attracts playboys and womanizers. In fact, ladies should be aware that seduction cannot get a serious man interested in you, it only makes him want you for the moment, and after that you mean nothing to him anymore – well, except for men without established principles, which means, if you can seduce such a man, another girl can seduce him too. This takes us to the next point:
Being natural – think of the reason some – or many – superstars, rich guys, and celebrities often end up with a not-so-pretty-girl. This is because they have seen a lot of ladies who are not real; who throw themselves at them given any little opportunity. Most ladies are not always real when they meet a rich or famous dude. When they give you their cards to call, don’t call. Rather have them call you. Never forget that men are hunters. They have seen a lot of animals. So when they see that real person, out of the so many unreal they have seen, they desire her immediately. They don’t care whether she’s pretty or not. After all, they’ve seen, and probably slept with a lot of pretty ladies. Be natural. Be real. Don’t say you only eat fried rice and ‘Sharwama’ whereas you actually drink garri at home. Never pretend to be what you are not. It will also interest you to know that most men who turn out to lose interest in their women eventually learn that she’s not whom he assumed her to be. This takes us to pretence:
Never, as a lady, pretend in a bid to getting a man interested in you. Yes, you might get him interested but you can’t keep him interested. What women don’t know is that men know when they are fake. A man always knows when a lady is lying – he either ignores it or uses it against her. Trust me, men have an idea of whom and what you are the moment they meet you. Make no mistake in thinking that women are some kind of voluminous book that cannot be exhausted. A man who has seen a lot of them always turns to the right page of each woman he meets. That’s why, if you have ever wondered, he ends up picking another girl after he has spent time with the other. Though, some ungrateful men can be blamed on this, but note that men usually don’t walk away if there is no reason to.

Travis Bradberry on Forbes educates: How To Be Calm Under Pressure

Most of us have experienced that sickening moment when you realize you’ve made a serious mistake. Perhaps it was a typo that threw off a financial forecast, or maybe you forgot to reserve a venue for an important meeting that’s scheduled for the following day. The details are different for everybody, but at some point, we’ve all felt that rising tide of dread and panic.
Mistakes and pressure are inevitable; the secret to getting past them is to stay calm.
New research from the Harvard Business School shows that most of us go about staying calm the wrong way. People who welcome the challenge of a crisis—so much so that overcoming the challenge excites them—perform far better than those who try to force themselves to be calm.
“People have a very strong intuition that trying to calm down is the best way to cope with their anxiety, but that can be very difficult and ineffective,” said study author Allison Wood Brooks. “When people feel anxious and try to calm down, they are thinking about all the things that could go badly. When they are excited, they are thinking about how things could go well.”
Staying composed, focused, and effective under pressure are all about your mentality. People who successfully manage crises are able to channel their emotions into producing the behavior that they want.
In other words, they turn their anxiety into energy and excitement.
This can’t happen if you don’t engage your logic. Yes, making a big mistake is embarrassing. You might get yelled at by your boss, and the mistake might even show up on your next performance appraisal, but, in all likelihood, it’s not going to result in your getting fired, losing your house, living out of your car, or in any of the other catastrophic thoughts that fuel anxiety and keep you from getting focused.
If you struggle with putting things into perspective, just ask yourself two simple questions: What’s the worst thing that could happen as a result of this? Will this matter in five years? Your answers should put a stop to cataclysmic thinking. You’ll probably realize that you’re panicking due to the anticipation of public embarrassment more than anything else. Once you get over that, you can build confidence by picking up the pieces and making things better.
Recommended by Forbes
To help put things in perspective, think about situations that were worse than yours were. More than likely, the people at your company who have made serious mistakes are still there and doing just fine. Those legendary mistakes usually have few long-term effects on otherwise good employees. Remind yourself:
‘There’s more to me than this situation. One honest mistake won’t define me.’

Next, you need to recognize that people are less focused on you than you think they are. It’s easy to see yourself as the center of the maelstrom. You’re embarrassed, and you’re worried about your job. The more you feel judged by others, the more intense your anxiety. But your boss, and everyone else, will spend far less time worrying about you than they will about trying to improve a difficult situation, which is what you should be focusing on in the first place. You need to realize that they won’t have much time to think about you until after the dust has settled, and by that time, you’ll have become part of the solution.
Now, you need to magnify your logic. Nothing helps you maintain the right frame of mind in a crisis like logical thinking. Once you’ve forestalled the panic, it’s time to ask yourself important factual questions: What exactly happened? What are the possible repercussions? Is there still time to avoid those repercussions? If so, how? Who needs to be involved? If it’s too late to head off the repercussions, what can be done to mitigate the damage? Don’t let your mind run off with ridiculous self-accusations.
Finally, take action. Once you’ve figured out the facts and screwed your head on straight, it’s time to own up to the situation. Putting off the hard work of cleaning up the mess just gives your sense of dread more power; pouring your energy into making things better is both empowering and a wonderful distraction from any anxiety that might surface. Remember, getting excited by the challenge of rising from the ashes will improve your performance dramatically.
To keep things humming, don’t be so hard on yourself. Nobody’s perfect. Even the most successful people make serious mistakes. Henry Ford’s first car company failed after just 18 months, Oprah Winfrey was deemed “unfit for television” in an early reporting job, and Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star for his lack of creativity. Beating yourself up might be a tempting option, but it never accomplishes anything, and it certainly doesn’t make you any calmer. Instead, keep your energy focused on the future and the things you can change.
Bringing It All Together
The ability to manage your emotions and remain calm under pressure has a direct link to your performance. TalentSmart has conducted research with more than a million people, and we’ve found that 90% of top performers are skilled at managing their emotions in times of stress in order to remain calm and in control.
Nobody likes making mistakes. But no matter how big the mistake is, succumbing to panic isn’t going to help. Giving in to catastrophic thinking undermines your ability to make good decisions and to move forward effectively. Instead, use these strategies to stay calm so you can assess the situation, develop a plan, be accountable, and get busy making things right so you can move on.

Report shows that consumption of carrot prevents colon cancer, others – Expert

Consumption of carrot prevents colon cancer, others – ExpertA Nutritionist, Mrs Osas Egwebe, has said that carrot juice has anti-carcinogen properties that helps in the protection of cancer of the colon and other ailments.
Egwebe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja that carrot contained good amount of the anti-cancer nutrient called Beta-Carotene.
He said “an anti-carcinogen is any chemical which reduces the occurrence of cancers, reduces the severity of cancers that do occur.
“Beta-carotene can ward off cancers of the stomach, cervix, uterus, the oral cavity and also helps to prevent heart disease due to its antioxidant abilities.
“Beta-carotene has been linked to reduced risk of several cancers, notably lung and colon cancers. Research has proven that getting the proper level of antioxidants into our bloodstream will reduce the risk of cancer.
“Researchers found out that eating carrots reduces the risk of colon cancer by as much as 24 per cent. Another study also shows that women who eat raw carrots are five to eight times less likely to develop breast cancer than women who do not eat carrots.’’
The nutritionist explained that daily consumption of the vegetable could also reduce the risk of stroke by 68 per cent, adding that people who ate more than five carrots a week were less likely to suffer a stroke than those who ate only one carrot a month.
Egwebe said regular consumption of carrots could reduce cholesterol level which was good at preventing heart-related problems.
She added that “carrot is also rich in vitamin A and it is good for good eyesight.
“Carrot juice strengthens the eyes and keeps the mucus membranes of all cavities of the body in healthy condition. Eating carrot immediately after food can kill all the harmful germs in the mouth.
“It cleanses the teeth, removes the food particles from cavities, checks bleeding of the gums and tooth decay.
“Carrot is good for blood sugar regulation because of the presence of carotenoids in them. Carotenoids inversely affect insulin resistance and thus lower blood sugar.
“Carotenoids are natural pigments which are synthesised by plants and are responsible for the bright colours of various fruits and vegetables.’
The expert noted that carrot soup was a home remedy for diarrhea “because it calms the bowel and slows down bacterial development.
“The soup gives sodium, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, sulfur and magnesium essential to check diarrhea, as well as the growth of harmful bacteria and prevents vomiting.’’
Egwebe explained that regular consumption of carrot juice could prevent the formation of gastric ulcer and other digestive disorders and could serve as laxative.
“Carrot juice is an effective remedy in diseases like intestinal colic, colitis, appendicitis, peptic ulcer and dyspepsia.
“Also, eating raw carrot or in grated form helps fights aging, maintain healthy skin, hair, bones and eyesight and can be used for healing wounds, cuts and inflammation.’’
The nutritionist further added that fresh carrot juice could help to relieve stress, fatigue and energise the body, as well as strengthen the immune system.
She then urged people susceptible to health conditions such as ulcer, among others, to include carrot in their daily diet.

Collapsed Building: T B Joshua Absent in Court, Judge Adjourns Trial to Dec 11

BlackBerry leaves Pakistan following govt backdoor demands

BlackBerry leaves Pakistan following govt backdoor demandsBlackBerry is pulling out of Pakistan entirely next year, saying it won’t sell devices or services there because the government has demanded access to BlackBerry Enterprise Service emails and BBM chats. Pakistan issued a shutdown order on BlackBerry services in July of this year, telling the country’s mobile phone operators the company would no longer be allowed to operate in the country after Nov. 30 due to “security reasons.” While BlackBerry could have negotiated a deal to keep its reported 5,000 Pakistani enterprise users, it instead chose to leave the country entirely. Beyond its BES services, general consumers using its BIS products will lose access as well.
In a blog post announcing its decision, COO Marty Beard said that while the company would prefer not to leave the market, “remaining in Pakistan would have meant forfeiting our commitment to protect our users’ privacy” and that was “a compromise we are not willing to make.” Although it might look like BlackBerry has scored a win for privacy and for its reputation as a company that protects users’ privacy above all else, the actual story is a little more complicated. With up to 5,000 BES users in the country, the move won’t exactly add up to a major revenue loss. Plus, the company has previously worked out deals in other countries to meet government requests to monitor users’ communications.

In 2013, for instance, India gained real time access to email communications, BBM chats, and the web browsing habits of BIS users inside the country. BlackBerry claims authorities were not given access to the email records of BES users; however, they could request information on which businesses used the platform. The company has also reportedly made agreements facilitating access to consumers’ data with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Russia. The U.S. government doesn’t have an explicitly outlined deal with the company, but BlackBerry’s privacy policy does note that when legally obligated, it will turn over personal information or defer to telecoms to provide the requested data. The company hasn’t issued any transparency reports about what kind of requests it’s received for users’ data.
In Pakistan, BlackBerry initially planned to end operations at the end of November but had its deadline extended to December 30th. BlackBerry did clarify that it’s “more than happy” to assist law enforcement in criminal investigations, but Pakistan’s request for a general backdoor to customers’ information apparently went too far.

I’m Madly in Love with another Man’s Wife

Have you ever fallen in love with your neighbour’s or anyone else’s wife? Ever felt like there is no other girl in the world but a woman who is already married? Have you ever slept and all you dream about is the lady with kids staying next door? Have you ever wished a man was dead just for you to take over his wife? Well, this is my story and you just have to be interested…

Patricia is my colleague at The Summons Magazine. There is no doubt in my mind that she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met, and I have often wondered the reason her husband doesn’t treat her with much respect as I would. Perhaps, that is one of the reasons I can’t sleep a night without seeing her in my dream. Each time I’m alone, I imagine what she’s doing with her husband at the moment. There are moments when I would want nothing more than to pick up my phone and dial her number. Just to ask her one of those stupid questions a man always asks a woman when he loves her but can neither have her nor speak of it to her.
This morning, when she came to work, she looked grim. She’s tall and slender. She’s about 5ft6. Her long ebony-black hair, flown over her shoulders, matched her glossy dark skin. She wore an inch above-knee gown under a yellow jacket, and with almost no face make-up. Behind her gloomy countenance, I still saw beauty without comparison. She would always smile at me – that smile that always makes me happy all day, and which I usually feel more jealous about when I see her smile at someone else. But today she didn’t. And it broke my heart. I thought of how she spent her night with her husband and why she wasn’t looking so cheerful. I went over to her.
‘You don’t look..’
‘I’m fine, thank you.’ She said before I could finish.
Maybe she didn’t start the day on a proper footing with her husband. Why would men not treat their wives as they should when many other men out there would do anything just to have them? I wondered.

When it was noon, I offered to go and pick her two kids from school. That was not the first day I did that.

Colonial Christianity in Beti’s The Poor Christ of Bomba

‘Absolutely! You will protect them spiritually. You will tell them: “my dear children, you must accept the sufferings of this vale of tears. In death, you will find your reward.”’ p35
The Poor Christ of Bomba’ is a novel by Mongo Beti. It’s sourced on the dais of colonialism which pillaged through the mind of the colonized. Beti reveals the true intention of the African colonial masters, using Bomba, a town in Cameroon, as a microscopic example. In ‘The Poor Christ of Bomba,’ the western ‘masters of the soul’ came for their own interest and the text discusses themes such as deceit, hypocrisy, dehumanization, conscience etc. The last having to do with the young Denis who, after his sexual encounter with a lady, carries around the conscience of a sinner and views himself as unworthy of salvation.
This article, however, will be focused on the paradigm of colonial Christianity by the Catholic missionaries in Africa. It will not be inappropriate to argue that, speaking from the text, Christianity was used to plunge into the conscience of the colonized. The Western colonial masters, first, viewed Africa as a place filled with monsters that needed salvaging. Secondly, Africans were viewed as sinners who were doomed to perish. This is seen in the event where a character angrily refuses to listen to the Father when the latter tries to tell him about Jesus Christ: he retorts, ‘Jesus Christ, another damned white! Another that I’d like to crush with my left foot. Do I come and tell you about my ancestors, huh?’
The implication of this shows that the natives are already aware of the existence of divinity and do not need to be reminded of it by people who have come only to subdue them. They know that to kill, to steal, and to sleep with another man’s wife is bad, and they already submit to the god of their ancestors.
Another old man reacts to Father Drumont’s action:
I’m not a Christian, Father. I’ve never been baptized and… suppose the whites were dancing here tonight instead of us and you were passing by, would you rush in and break their trumpets and their guitars? Answer me sincerely, Father.’ P55
Again, one would ask, what kind of man walks into the house of an elder and orders him to stop his music? Even Jesus Christ, as a character in the scripture from which they give sermons, did not convert his followers by subjecting them to his rules.
Another evil of Christianity as introduced by the colonial missionaries is revealed in the act of keeping women at the parish to work for some months in a bid to readying them for marriage. Many of whom in this process sleep with the catechist and eventually become more corrupt than they were. Zacharia becomes the demon with which the missionaries’ Satan uses to corrupt the young women under the parish’s care. In this case, we learn that the introduction of this Christianity is the birth of a certain kind of evil – the mind evil. The natives become free to act outside the guard of tradition and to do evil right there in church.
In the text, we also find deceit in the form of Christianity. While Father drumont discusses with the administrator, a fellow white, on how the latter treats the natives badly and forces them to labour to their death, we learn this: the administrator says to the Father, ‘You say to them: “Go and work at the mission, or you’ll all go to hell.” Is that not a worse constraint than any earthly one? They laugh.’ Following the mood of this discussion, one would conclude that the act of Christianity has been a charade of which both men are aware of. It explains that even Father Drumont is aware of the fact that there is no truth and sincerity in the sermons the missionaries give to the natives. The idea of it all is to make them their subjects; to strip them of any awareness they have and enslave their minds with a strange doctrine.
Once, an old woman meets the Father to confess her supposedly sin, but he dismisses and asks her to go and pay her parish dues before she will be confessed and forgiven. We also learn that while the natives work and die, the Father goes many times a day to confess the dying.
What we come to notice in this instance of colonial Christianity as revealed in ‘The Poor Christ of Bomba’ is that the adventure of the colonial missionaries in African nations is advanced only to capture the soul and mind of the African peoples. As noted by Walter Rodney, colonial Christianity denied Africa the right to cultural development and self expression. It took away from Africa its historical identity and we became drifters in the modern world, living in a world we did not create and do not understand. Let us end with this: Gicaamba in Ngugi  Wa Thiong’o’s I’ll Marry When I Want notes that:
Religion is not the same thing as God. When the British imperialists came here in 1895, all the missionaries of the churches held the Bible in the left hand, and the gun in the right hand. The white man wanted us to be drunk with religion while he, in the meantime, was mapping and grapping our land and starting factories and businesses on our sweat. (Ngugi: 1982: 56-7)

Feminism in Amma Darko’s ‘Faceless’

Feminism is the ideology and belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. Reading Amma Darko’s ‘Faceless,’ we are presented with the malaises in the African society and the problem an African woman faces, of which abuse and negligence are primary focal points. We cannot deny the fact that African culture gives little value to women regardless that they contribute more in building a home. Darko addresses this problem from a rather tragic perspective – perhaps in a message that there is nothing more tragic than treating a woman like she’s not actively important.
Living in a society where women are used as pawns and little regard given to, Dina divorces her husband and starts an NGO organization, MUTE, where she addresses society’s troubling issues more critically. Darko presents a situation where only women work in this organization which supports the claim that women can do as well as men in any position.
On the other hand, Kabria shares the same independent view as her friend and boss, Dina. She is married with three children, but often, she disagrees with her husband’s point of view. Darko shows that both educated and uneducated African men are not different in issues of marriage. Her husband still holds the view that he is not supposed to do any other work in the house so long as he has a job and provides for the family. Kabria, however, does not agree with this. She too has a job which she combines with house chores, taking care of the children and always running off from work to pick them from school. Meanwhile, her husband, who expects his meal to be ready as soon as he comes back, doesn’t see her as a busy woman. Let’s react to this:

“Adede’s car horn sounded at the gate about an hour after Kabria and the children had all eaten and bathed and were settled behind the television. She managed a smile for him at the door after Abena had opened the gate for him. But inside, she fumed as she reflected upon all that long and easy talk about how if a woman wanted to keep her marriage always fresh and her husband all to herself, she had better make him feel good at home. ‘Welcome him home with a smile,’ they say, ‘look good for him. Wear a mini skirt for him if he loves seeing you in one. Pamper him. Do him this. Do him that. Gosh! Who pampered her when she returned home tired from work, only to go and continue in the kitchen… who met her with a smile? Who wore Levi’s jeans and an open neck polo shirt, which she loved so much on, for?” (57)

The problem we have in this except is that women are taught how to keep their men at all cost, whereas men are not taught the same. Here, Adede represents the majority of African men who see women just as housewives and a man’s tool for sexual satisfaction. These men don’t bother themselves with other things that make a woman happy so long as they have a job that puts food on her table. We can also argue that such men know a lot about the engine of their cars than they know about their wife’s feelings, what they really need, and what makes them tick. Kabria knows what she must do to make her husband happy and keep her family together, but Adede believes every other thing is settled on his path providing he pays the family bills. Most of the efforts that are needed to keep the family together are expected from the women while the men only give orders and when they are bored with events at home, they go out to spend time with friends, but it becomes a problem if the reverse serves the case.
On another instance, unlike Kabria, Maa Tsuru is an uneducated character that represents a timid and illiterate African woman who has no knowledge of what she is doing or what she’s supposed to do. Though her plight is nobody’s fault but Darko presents a sad situation of how a woman without standard; a women of total conformity is treated in the society. Maa Tsuru, like most African women, holds the view that her only role as a woman is to have children and so she does not see herself as more valuable in other things. Her ignorance and vulnerability makes her become a sex tool to men. In her time, she has met a lot of men who take advantage of her and walk away. Darko shows a circumstance where things always go wrong for most women as soon as a man comes into their lives. Maa Tsuru has five children without a husband. Her first four children are with a man who comes back severally as her husband and runs away at the birth of each child. The children all fend for themselves on the street and the first two girls, at fifteen and fourteen, are already sexually exposed. In fact, a neighbour who has two children with two separated women takes advantage of this and rapes one of the underage girls.
We are introduced to a kind of Sodom-and-Gomorrah Street life where both boys and girls are living in but it is the boys who are in control. The boys are comfortable because they live like kings in the street and use the girls’ plights to their own advantage. This act demonstrates that the society has no pity for defenseless women.
The image of feminine gender in Faceless depicts the evil in treating women as second-rates. We are exposed to the situation where the woman tries harder than the man to keep the family together; a society where vulnerable and susceptible women become tools of sport for men, even when they are still underage and need protection.
More so, ‘Faceless’ reminds us of a society in which there is no joy for a mother who has no male child.

Lagos to sanction landlords with poor septic tanks

Lagos to sanction landlords with poor septic tanks
Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode

Lagos State government has vowed to clamp down on owners of buildings with poor or substandard septic tanks, declaring the practice as unhealthy and could lead to outbreak of epidemic.
The government also warned landlords with multi-room tenement, who have just one toilet for over 60 residents to make amend without further delay, saying it would no longer tolerate such attitude. According to it, such buildings constitute environmental nuisance.
Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Babatunde Adejare, gave this warning Monday while speaking at the stakeholder’s forum for Sensitization and Public Awareness on Environmental and Health Implications, which took place at the Agege Mini Stadium.
The Commissioner reiterated that the state government would no longer permit idea of having any landlord making available just a toilet for use of about 60 tenants, saying such idea would no longer be tolerated.
According to him, the management of 2.1billion litres of waste water generated by over 20 million Lagosians daily, with the attendant health and environmental implication is a task that necessitates the ongoing efforts.

“The law prescribes punishment for them. Now, KAI, environmental officers will be doing part of it. This is part of what they will be doing. We will come to enforce the law. A lot of things are abnormal in our environment; we won’t allow people to dispose refuse in the drainage.
“Imagine a landlord of 25 rooms having a single toilet. He makes money from the building but cannot get toilet for the tenants. How much do people build a toilet? Since government doesn’t collect any money from landlords, they should use it to build toilets for their tenants.
“The idea of tenants queuing before they can use the toilet will no longer be tolerated. Just imagine a 25 room apartment and over 10 people live in each of the rooms. How can they cope with one toilet?” he queried.
Adejare, who described the theme of the stakeholders forum entitled: “Waste water Management-Perfecting the Natural Practice” as apt, added that people should desist from digging their bore hole and well water close to the septic tank, saying such practice always lead to epidemics.

“Your environment determines the kind of the person you are. That’s why the development of a country is measured by how hygienic your environment is,” the commissioner said.
Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of the Environment, Mr. Adeshina Onisarutu, who also spoke at the event, warned against discharging of waste effluents into the drains by some landlords.
“Many people erroneously think that once their waste is disposed into the drains that is all. It is not so at all, we must take care of our environment at all times. Whatever we disposed wrongly will always come back to us.
“We have turned our environment, drainage channels to dump sites. Government spends huge resources to treat water that we drink. The lagoon and the sea are filled with dirt disposed by residents. This is not good for us as people,” Onisarutu said.

Vin Diesel honors Paul Walker on two-year anniversary of his death: 'You will always be my brother'

Vin Diesel has remembered Paul Walker on the two-year anniversary of Walker’s death.
“No matter where you are in this universe,” Diesel wrote on Facebook Monday, “You will always be, my brother.”
On Instagram, Diesel shared a shot of he and Walker with overset text reading, “Brotherhood has no limits.”

The Last Witch Hunter actor paid tribute to his fallen friend in May when he dedicated a cover of Tove Lo’s “Habits (Stay High)” to Walker, and again in August while accepting a Teen Choice Award for Furious 7.
“One of the best blessings in our lives is the fact that we have the opportunity to call Pablo our brother,” Diesel said at the ceremony. “Paul Walker is here in spirit with us.”
Monday marks two years since Walker died in a car accident. Earlier in the day, Fast and Furious franchise costar Tyrese Gibson shared a photo of himself with Walker, expressing that “it’s still not easy” when it comes to the loss of “our brother.”
