5 Everyday Foods That Kill Your Sexual Prowess

Food and sex have a long, complicated history together. For years we’ve heard that what we eat can have sexual effects that work on both a psychosomatic level and a physiological level. But did you ever consider that there are foods that could slow your sex drive down to a near screeching halt?

Sex

Here are five such foods:
  1. Beans
This health food is praised for being high in fiber and antioxidants that can help you keep your waistline, but it may be considered an anti-aphrodisiac for its gassy factor. Although our concerns about excessive flatulence may be exaggerated, when it comes to sex, being safe is always better than being sorry. Beans contain indigestible sugars that can make it down to our colon and function as prebiotics to feed our good bacteria, and make for a healthier colon, according to the Harvard Health Letter. However, before it ends up in our colon, these sugars reach our stomach, and the floating stools from trapped gasses make us feel bloated and gassy.
  1. Chocolate
This tasty treat is full of anandamide and phenylethylamine, two compounds that cause the body to release endorphins triggered by sex and physical activity.  Popularly known as an aphrodisiac, the cocoa, which contains methylxanthines, makes the skin sensitive to every touch, but it can inadvertently make us lethargic. Dr. Fran Walfish, Beverly Hills psychotherapist and author, The Self-Aware Parent, told Medical Daily, “Most folks think of ‘chocolate’ as an aphrodisiac but, for my female patients, chocolate makes them tired and I hear it temporarily lowers their sexual drive and libido.”
  1. Fish
If you’re visiting a seafood restaurant and plan to share some oysters with your partner, try to limit your fish intake. Industrial waste chemicals, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), banned in the U.S., can mimic natural hormones, causing cancer in adults, and adverse health and reproductive effects in both human and wildlife offspring, according to a 2013 study. Although they were banned in the U.S. in 1979, PCBs have remained in the environment for decades, possibly erasing sex drive in women.
  1. Fried Foods
Indulging in greasy foods like burgers and fries is a no-no when it comes to healthy eating and sex. The trans-fat found in fried foods is known to dramatically decrease the male and female libido. The adverse effects of consuming these trans fatty acids includes an increase in the amount of abnormal sperm production for men and interferes with gestation in women, wrote Dr. Douglas Heise, a chiropractic physician in Florida, on his website. Men and women should avoid the consumption of French fries right before sex, since it can cause sexual health problems for both.
  1. Microwavable Popcorn
This popular movietime snack may satisfy our taste buds during a flick, but it can wreak havoc on our sex drive. The chemicals used in the inner lining of microwave popcorn bags, and those found in nonstick pots and pans, have been linked to a lower sex drive for men. These types of popcorn bags contain perfluoroalkyl acids, such as PFOA or PFOS, known to significantly lower sperm counts, according to a 2009 study.

Pakistan celebrates Sadiq Khan’s London mayor win

The election of a Pakistani bus driver’s son as the mayor of London was greeted with celebration on Saturday in Pakistan, from where Sadiq Khan’s parents emigrated to Britain in the 1960s.
News of Khan’s win in the British capital featured on the front pages of all major Pakistani newspapers Saturday, while also causing a stir on social media.
Pakistan celebrates Sadiq Khan’s London mayor win“Congratulations @SadiqKhan 4 being elected mayor of London,” tweeted Bilawal Bhutto, leader of the opposition Pakistan People’s Party and son of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
“British Pakistanis need role model,” he added.
Rival opposition leader and former cricketer Imran Khan — whose ex-wife Jemima is the sister of Sadiq Khan’s principal opponent Zac Goldsmith — also tweeted his congratulations to the new mayor.
Elsewhere on social media most Pakistanis appeared to greet Khan’s win with pride, with messages marking the recent successes of other high-profile British Muslims — including former One Direction member Zayn Malik, who also has Pakistani heritage — going viral Saturday.
Some could not resist pointing out the irony of the jubilant reaction in the deeply conservative country.
“Pakistani: Sadiq Khan won! Reporter: So you’d vote for a minority immigrant son of a bus driver as Mayor of Karachi? Pakistani: Are you mad?” tweeted newspaper columnist Bina Shah.
Khan has told media that he has relatives in the port megacity of Karachi, where his grandparents reportedly migrated after the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan in 1947, as well as Faisalabad in Punjab and the capital, Islamabad.

Juventus plot shock swoop for frustrated £35m Arsenal star

JUVENTUS are reportedly eyeing a sensational move for Arsenal talisman Alexis Sanchez.

Alexis Sanchez
Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez could be set for a shock summer exit
The 27-year-old is understood to be growing increasingly frustrated with the Gunners and could seek a way out of the Emirates this summer.
It is said that his frustration has stemmed from Arsenal's failed title bid - which extends their Premier League title drought to 12 years - and the prospect of potentially missing out on Champions League football next season.
And Italian website Football Italia claim Juve are hoping to capitalise by going in for the Chile international in the summer transfer window.
Sanchez wants a club who will make a genuine push for the Champions League and Juve can offer him that along with the prospect of trophies after winning the Serie A title for a 32nd time this season.
This will not be the first time Juve have tried to sign Sanchez with the club failing on two previous occasions.
The first time being when he was at Udinese in 2011 and again in 2014 after he left Barcelona to move to the Gunners in a £35million deal.
It is understood that the move will hinge on Alvaro Morata's transfer dealings, with the Spaniard being linked with a return to Real Madrid as they look set to trigger his buy-back clause.
If Morata departs this will free up £24m in transfer funds, which Juve can put towards securing a move for Sanchez.
However, Sanchez's £7m-a-year wages could prove to be the stumbling block in getting a deal over the line, with his current salary double that of top earner Paul Pogba.
But if an agreement can be struck Sanchez could on his way to the Serie A.
Sanchez, who still has two years remaining on his Arsenal contract, has scored 16 goals in 39 games for Arsene Wenger's side this season and has made 11 assists.
He has been attracting interest from  and .

Arsenal at war: You won't believe what Alexis Sanchez has done to Arsene Wenger

ARSENE WENGER'S problems slumped to new lows following the revelations he is at war with Alexis Sanchez.

The Telegraph last night revealed Sanchez stormed out of the Emirates after being subbed during the 1-0 win over Norwich last weekend.
The Chile star snubbed Wenger and headed straight down the tunnel when he was hauled off with six minutes left before rushing out without acknowleding the Gunners boss.
It's now being reported Sanchez could quit the club when his contract runs out in 2018.
He is due to undergo contract tAlks in the summer but Arsenal may now face a battle to convince him to renew his deal.
Sanchez has struggled to find his best form this season and the storming out caps weeks of frustration.
Wenger has tried to play down the fact his star man reacted so badly by insisting he was showing his desire to play.
But the Telegraph say Wenger is less than impressed by the forward's antics and it led to a frosty week of training at London Colney.
Arsenal take on Manchester City tomorrow and despite the rocky relationship, Sanchez is expected to play.
Sanchez is no stranger to controversy during his time at the Emirates.
He questioned the team's desire earlier this season following back-to-back league defeats against Manchester United and Swansea.

Chelsea star tells new boss Antonio Conte: Sack this man or sell me

THIBAUT COURTOIS has held talks with Antonio Conte about his Chelsea plans.

Thibaut Courtois
Thibaut Courtois is thought to be unhappy at Chelsea
Courtois' future at Chelsea is under threat after he reportedly fell out with goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon.

Express Sport understands Chelsea are open to offers for the Belgium international, but have slapped a staggering £73million price tag on his head.

Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid and Barcelona are all keen on Courtois, who has had a disappointing season at Stamford Bridge.

The 23-year-old has publicly stated his intention to remain at Chelsea but reports suggest new boss Conte has accepted he will have to sell him this summer.
The Sun claim Courtois has spoken with the incoming Italian, who told the shot-stopper he wants to keep him.

But Courtois apparently indicated he would only wish to stay with the Blues if he could work with a new coach after losing confidence in 53-year-old Lollichon.

The Mail add that the pair have 'not got on all season', leading Courtois to consider his options.

Lollichon and former Chelsea keeper Petr Cech were close, before the Czech Republic hero left for Arsenal last summer.
Conte is bringing five of his own backroom staff with him to Chelsea - brother and tactical analyst Gianluca, long-term assistants Angelo Alessio and Massimo Carrera, scout Mauro Sandreani and fitness expert Paolo Bertelli.

But Chelsea are said to have made it clear Lollichon will remain under Conte, 46, after he asked the club if he could change the keeper coach in an effort to retain Courtois.

And now Conte is thought to be beginning to resign himself to having to sell Chelsea's current No 1 this summer.

Courtois is not interested in the PSG project but could return to Spain with old club Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid. Barcelona is another possible option.

Van Gaal hoping Man Utd can avenge Norwich loss

Van Gaal hoping Man Utd can avenge Norwich lossManchester United’s primary aim this weekend is to stay in the hunt for a top-four place in the Premier League, but Louis van Gaal also has revenge on his mind ahead of their trip to Norwich City.
United are four points adrift of neighbours Manchester City, who occupy the final Champions League place, but have played one game fewer.
Van Gaal believes his Red Devils need to take maximum points from their three remaining matches to stand a chance of jumping the queue, but when they head to Norwich for Saturday’s early kickoff there is an additional motivation.
Arguably the highlight of the struggling Canaries’ season came in December when they won the reverse fixture 2-1, courtesy of goals from Cameron Jerome and Alexander Tettey.
“We have to win our matches because otherwise we cannot be in the first four — that’s the pressure that we have. We have to fight until the end,” the Dutchman said. “They [Norwich] won at Old Trafford, so we have to take revenge also.
“It’s always difficult to fight against a team that fights to maintain their position in the Premier League from relegation.
“That’s always very difficult to fight against, but that is not an excuse. We have to cope with that. It shall be a very tough game but in spite of that we have to win.”
United’s home defeat to Norwich came during a difficult winter that saw Van Gaal under severe scrutiny, pressure which has never quite dissipated even as results improved.
The Old Trafford club went winless in all competitions for eight matches, including the entirety of December, with Van Gaal citing mounting injuries as a partial reason for the slump
Of United’s nine league defeats, five have come to teams in the bottom half and a total of 12 points have been lost to the five sides at the foot of the division, and their Dutch coach is aware they must address that record going forward.
“I always talk about facts, not about hypothetical circumstance and activities. I can only say that in the end of November we had first position, after that we had a big decline,” Van Gaal said.
“It’s a big damage, but the month of December has its own reasons for that. You have to cope with that, that is what we have to do. But when the injuries are so much in the same position, you cannot solve every problem anymore.
“These are the facts. But you can never say that if we didn’t have so many injuries that we would be first, because I have great respect for the champions, Leicester City.
“When I say we had injuries it’s not respectful to the champions, and they deserve it. But you see what we have done against the top five, you can see what we have done against the bottom five, and that is not a good average.”

Sadiq Khan becomes London's first Muslim mayor

London’s new mayor

Sadiq Khan takes the hot seat in London

DURING the first election campaign for the mayor of London in 2000, the debate centred on whether Britain needed city mayors with executive powers at all. As Labour’s Sadiq Khan takes over the post, after defeating his Conservative opponent, Zac Goldsmith, on May 5th, no one is arguing about that any more. Enthusiasm for mayors has spread. More than a dozen have been elected across England and more cities will follow suit next year.
Unlike his counterparts in America and Europe, the amount of hands-on power that Mr Khan will enjoy is limited. He is responsible for transport and oversees the Metropolitan Police force. He can recommend a housing strategy for a city that is desperately short of homes—but any major decision needs the approval of the central government.
When he needs extra money above an annual budget of £17 billion ($24.5 billion) for more police or an expansion of the city’s railway, he has to ask the chancellor of the exchequer. Those negotiations proved tough for his predecessor, Boris Johnson, an ebullient Tory. Mr Khan will face the trickier task of being a Labour mayor trying to extract money from a Conservative chancellor, who may be reluctant to pay for Labour ideas.
The big theme of Mr Khan’s campaign was a pledge to build 80,000 affordable homes a year, half of which he wants to be at a “genuinely affordable” price. Given that Mr Johnson, who cultivated a close relationship with house builders, never managed to deliver more than 24,000 new residences a year, this target looks wildly ambitious.
The newcomer also inherits some of the same headaches that preoccupied Mr Johnson and Ken Livingstone, the first mayor, who served two terms from 2000 to 2008. London’s congestion zones have had only modest success in preventing gridlock in the centre. The construction of cycle lanes, a passion of Mr Johnson, has slowed down traffic flow, leaving two-and four-wheeled Londoners shouting at each other. But Mr Khan is sensitive to the accusation that driving in London is expensive: a fee of £11.50 ($17) a day is levied for doing so. His proposed solutions are more shared car clubs and promoting greener ways of travelling.
Although his powers fall a long way short of those enjoyed by a New York mayor, Mr Khan still has some levers to pull. The mayor of London has a powerful bully pulpit at home and abroad. Mr Livingstone used it to promote pet left-wing causes. Mr Johnson emphasised the role of wealth creation and sought to forge keener business links with Asian cities.
A lawyer by background, Mr Khan was treated to rough tactics during the campaign, when his Conservative opponents highlighted legal work he had done for alleged Islamic extremists and his appearances with them on political platforms. The tactics did not sway Londoners: City Hall can celebrate its first Muslim, non-white mayor, especially poignant at a time when Europe is grappling with terror threats and political populism.
He will need to learn quickly about international affairs—comments he made in February praising Istanbul’s vibrancy sounded like an endorsement of the authoritarian policies of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the country’s president.
Mr Khan’s biggest challenge, however, will be at home. London’s wealth, confidence and ease with ethnic diversity have created an invisible moat, separating it from the rest of the country. Mr Khan reminded voters of his humble origins as the son of a bus driver and the potential of London as a springboard for social mobility. “Citizen Khan” sculpted a campaign that appealed to the anxious, the less affluent and those uneasy about London’s more glaring inequalities. Mr Johnson, while in office, tried to get approval for a new bridge across the River Thames. It would be a good idea for the new face in City Hall to build some bridges with the rest of Britain, too.

We’ll fulfil our own part of social contract with 2016 Budget – Buhari

We’ll fulfil our own part of social contract with 2016 Budget – BuhariAfter months of delay, controversies and forth and back correspondences with the National Assembly (NASS) over alleged padding and grey areas, President Muhammadu Buhari, Friday signed this year’s Appropriation Bill (Budget) into law.
The signing of the budget has effectively brought to an end six months of disagreements between the legislature and executive arms of government.
With this, the economy is set to pick up, as funds for capital projects will be released any time soon to execute them and fund other government undertakings.
The signing ceremony, which took place in the President’s Office at the Presidential Villa, Abuja was witnessed by a retinue of highly-placed government officials, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; Senate President Bukola Saraki; Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Babachir David Lawal.
Others who witnessed the signing were the National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Chairmen, Senate and House Appropriation Committees, Danjuma Goje and Abdulmumuni Jibrin; Ministers of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; Budget and National Planning, Senator Udoma Udo Udoma; State (National Planning), Zainab Ahmed; and Special Assistants to the President on National Assembly Matters, Ita Enang (Senate) and Abdulrahman Kawu (House).
Buhari, in a short speech before the signing, said the occasion marked the beginning of the proper implantation of the manifestos of his party, as outlined driving his inaugural speech in May last year.
According to the President: “This budget is intended to signpost a renewal of our commitment to restoring the budget as a serious article of faith with the Nigerian people.
“This administration is committed to ensuring that henceforth, the annual Appropriation Bill is presented to the National Assembly in time for the passage of the Act before the beginning of the fiscal year.
“Through the 2016 budget, aptly titled ‘Budget of Change,’ the government seeks to fulfill its own side of the social contract.
“The budget I have signed into law provides for aggregate expenditures of N6.06trn. Further details of the approved budget, as well as our Strategic Implementation Plan for the budget, will be provided by the Minister of Budget and National Planning.”
Buhari, who promised to speak more on the details of the budget, its implementation and the over-all national economic and social policies of the government in his first anniversary speech on May 29, however, indicated that the budget was anchored on disciplined implementation.
“In designing the budget, we made a deliberate choice to pursue an expansionary fiscal policy, despite the huge decline in government revenues from crude oil exports.
“This is why we decided to enlarge the budget deficit at this time, to be financed principally through foreign and domestic borrowings. All borrowings will, however, be applied towards growth-enhancing capital expenditures.
“Consequently, the signing of the budget today will trigger concerted efforts to reflate the Nigerian economy, a key element of which is an immediate injection of N350bn into the economy by way of capital projects.
“To illustrate our renewed commitment to infrastructural development, the budget allocates over N200billion to road construction, as against a paltry N18billion allocated for same purpose in the 2015 budget.”
He added that “Despite the current difficulties, we will work extra hard to achieve our revenue projections. Our revenue generating agencies are coming under better management and are being re-oriented. The implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is expected to contribute significantly to improving transparency over government revenues.
“Our determined fight against corruption is resulting in improvements in the quality of public expenditure. The work of the Efficiency Unit, as well as other public financial management initiatives, are also contributing in this regard.
“The continuing efforts to reduce recurrent expenditures should hopefully free up more funds for capital expenditure in 2017 and beyond.”
Making allusion to his New Year message, the President reiterated the fact that living in the State House does not in any way alienate him from the daily struggles of Nigerians, saying: “I read the newspapers and listen to the television and radio news. I hear your cries, share your pains.”
“We are experiencing probably the toughest economic times in the history of our nation. I want to commend the sacrifice, resilience and toughness of all Nigerians, young and old, who have, despite the hardships, continued to have hope and confidence of a great future for Nigerians.
“But permit me to say that this government is also like none other. We are absolutely committed to changing the structure of the Nigerian economy once and for all.
“We are working night and day to diversify the economy, such that we never again have to rely on one commodity to survive as a country, so that we can produce the food we eat, make our own textiles, produce most of things we use.
“We intend to create the environment for our young people to be able to innovate and create jobs through technology.”
He said he would not promise Nigerians that this would be an easy journey, adding: “But in the interest of so much and so many, we must tread this difficult path.
“But I can assure you this government you have freely elected will work with honesty and dedication day and night to ensure that our country prospers and that the prosperity benefits all Nigerians.”
In a chat with State House correspondents after the event, Saraki said it was an epoch-making event, noting that the legislature would work in close cooperation with the executive to ensure the budget is fully implemented for the good of Nigerians.
Flanked by Dogara and Odigie-Oyegun, the Senate President admitted that the passing of the budget had been the most difficult assignment for the lawmakers, but appealed to Nigerians to put the chapter behind and look forward to a brighter future.
“The passing of the Appropriation Bill is the most difficult all over the world. Even America that we copy, sometimes the government is shut down, but we didn’t see that in our case. It is a first time and a new government, so these sorts of challenges are rare.
“But I am happy we are all here to see that we have passed the budget and the President has ‎signed it into law and what we await now is implementation.
“I want to assure Nigerians that from the comments of the President, our commitment is to see that the budget is implemented, not just the assent, and that is when Nigerians will begin to see the benefits.
“Let us focus on the good part and play less on the controversy that is behind us now and I want to assure Nigerians of the benefit expected from this budget is implemented.”
Asked how the controversy surrounding the budget could be averted in future, the Senate President said early presentation of the budget is a major panacea.
“We have long time now to prepare. The government is in place, the new appointments and those in National Assembly are in place, so I am sure it will not be like this again.
“Let us focus on what that document is, and that is the benefits to Nigerians, that we will begin to see in the implementation. And that is what we will do in our oversight function.”

Nigerians will begin to enjoy the impact of ‘Change’ soon – Lai Mohammed

Alhaji Lai Mohammed
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said the government “change agenda is real and that Nigerians will get the change they voted for’’.
The minister stated this at a meeting with the Newspaper Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN) on Thursday in Lagos
He said the administration had been keeping its campaign promises which centred on three broad areas – tackling corruption, ensuring the security of lives and property and the economy-.
“This Administration has been working round the clock to provide good governance and put the country on a sound footing, economically, socially and otherwise.
“We know that the past few months have been challenging for Nigerians. We are working hard to ease their pains”
Mohammed said that the administration had designed strategy to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty.
He said the strategy would be carried out through six social intervention areas that would greatly impact on the economy as well as on lives:
He said that 500,000 graduates would be employed and trained as teachers while 370,000 non-graduates (artisans, technicians) would be trained and employed
The minister said that one million people (Farmers, market women, etc) would be granted loans to set up small businesses.
He said Conditional Cash Transfer would be made available to the most vulnerable people (not unemployed graduates) while school feeding would target 4.5 million school children
Mohammed said bursaries scholarships would also be provided for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics students
On security, the minister said that Boko Haram had been defeated through committed and purposeful leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari.
“The insurgents have lost their capacity to carry out the kind of spectacular attacks for which they became infamous. This did not happen by accident.
“It was the result of purposeful, credible and courageous leadership being provided by the President who started off by ordering the relocation of the command and control centre of the battle against insurgency from Abuja to Maiduguri.
“He also rallied regional and global support for Nigeria’s efforts and boosted the morale and fighting capability of armed troops,’’ he said.
Ministers of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh and Environmentm Amina Mohammed were at the event and they gave accounts of the activities of their ministries.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was anchored by the President of NPAN and the Chairman of ThisDay Newspaper, Nduka Obaigbena.
The General Secretary of the association, Dame Comfort Obi and its two life patrons, Sam Amuka and Alhaji Isma’ila Isa Funtua were also in attendance.
Managing Directors of and Chief Executive Officers of print media were also at the meeting.
In a closing remark, Mr Ray Ekpu, who spoke on behalf of others, said the gathering was informative about the activities of government.
He said there the meeting offered the opportunity for a good exchange of views and he expressed the hope that it would be sustained.

Five reasons you shouldn’t buy bottled water anymore

post-feature-image
HomenewsdeskLife Hacks

Though you might be somewhat familiar with this topic, I bet you’ll be interested in reading about the latest reasons and research stating why you should skip buying bottled water when you go to the supermarket.

Read on, and once you’ve finished, please let me know if you have the same attitude towards bottled water as you do now.

1. Bottled water costs you more in the long run.

We all know why we buy bottled water. It’s more convenient to grab one and go, than it is to clean and maintain a re-usable bottle, or to grab a cup and fill it up using a filter-based pitcher.

While using bottled water will save you time in the short run, it will also drain your hard-earned cash in the long run. Indeed, recent studies have shown that bottled water costs around $7.50 per gallon, which is about two thousand times as costly as the water that comes from your faucet.

Despite that fact, we continue allowing ourselves to be bamboozled by beverage companies. From 2011 to 2012, we’ve increased our combined spending on bottled water by 6.5%, making it quite a profitable industry indeed.

2. Bottled water pollutes the environment.

According to National Geographic, folks purchase around half a billion bottles of water per week – in the United States alone.

Unfortunately, few of those bottles are recycled, with most ending up piled high in landfills, floating around in stagnant rivers, or lodging themselves in various underwater environments.

If we really want to help mother nature, we’ve got to stop buying bottled water and look to our taps instead.

3. Bottled water isn’t any cleaner than tap water.

Despite commercials from Arrowhead and Fiji that would have you believe otherwise, bottled water isn’t any more “pure” than the stuff that comes from your tap.

A 1999 study brings this difference to light. They tested over 1,000 bottles of water, sourced from 103 completely different brands. While the water was safe to drink for the most part, they found that at least some samples they tested contained contaminants that exceeded state standards. These contaminants ranged from those of the bacterial variety, to carcinogens and various kinds of toxic chemicals — all of which would normally not be permitted under normal EPA standards.

If you’re thinking, “Well, that study was done in 1999 so it’s probably out of date,” you’d unfortunately be incorrect. Since that time, the regulations that guide the bottled water industry have not changed.

The bottom line? Your tap water is more than likely just as pure (if not more pure) than any of the bottled water you can purchase in the market. Filtering it yourself only makes it that much better.

4. Bottled water companies aren’t being honest with you.

If a company isn’t telling you the truth, do you feel inclined to give them your hard-earned money? I would bet your answer is no.

Many bottled water brands advertise their product as being sourced from natural springs or other theoretically pure sources. The truth is; however, that up to 45% of bottled water is sourced from the exact same places that your tap water comes from. These corporations try to hide that fact in order to drive sales.

Brands like Aquafina and Dasani are the worst offenders when it comes to using municipal water sources. This is the same exact stuff you can get from your faucet.

Therefore, if you are buying bottled water, it’s likely that it comes from a municipal source. Probably one that exists in California. That’s reason enough in my book to stay away. (Being from California, I literally haven’t seen more than a couple drops of rain in the past five years.)

5. Buying bottled water sets a bad example.

Consider for a moment that we live in a world where ~750 million people have little to no access to clean drinking water. What would they think of us if they knew we wasted a precious resource like water by placing it into bottles, when we could just as easily get it from our faucets and refrigerators? We forget the absolute luxury of running water.

Given everything else stated in this article, it would seem ludicrous to them that we’ve managed to perpetuate such a strange and backwards industry.

Finally, I’ll end with this: the human race spends collectively around $100 billion dollars a year on bottled water. The United Nations estimates that just 1/6th of that amount of money would be enough to “cut in half the number of people without access to clean water.”

So let’s be thankful for our taps! Instead of spending our money on the bottled stuff, let’s send it to those who really need it.

This 7-year-old girl without hands won a handwriting competition

When Anaya Ellick first applied to attend Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, Va. this year, the school’s superintendent, Ron White, wasn’t sure it could meet her needs. But her parents assured him that Anaya needed no special accommodations — she was just like any other kid in the first grade.
She just happened to be born without hands.
The 7-year-old does not use prosthetics, yet she takes all of her own notes in class. She stands at her desk and grips the pencil between her forearms. From that angle, she is able to write with perfect penmanship.
Her handwriting is so impeccable that her principal, Tracy Cox, entered her in a national handwriting competition in the category for students with special needs. In April, it was announced that she had beaten 50 other children to win the Nicholas Maxim Special Award for Excellence in Manuscript Penmanship.
To look at her entry, it would be impossible to know it was written by a child without hands. Each block letter is flawless.

“She inspires everyone around her because you wonder how does she do this. It’s not like she’s struggling to do this,” White said. “Where we see an obstacle, she sees an opportunity.”
During an assembly with older children, Cox told them about Anaya’s award. She teased them that they they had no excuses for sloppy handwriting.
“It’s easy to complain about things that are hard, but you look at a little girl like her and we have no excuses for digging in and doing hard work,” Cox said. “Life is tough and we are going to be faced with challenges, but when you really apply yourself and have that determination, she shows amazing things can happen.”

Sex Talk for Muslim Women

Credit Hanna Barczyk

CAIRO — After I gave a reading in Britain last year, a woman stood in line as I signed books. When it was her turn, the woman, who said she was from a British Muslim family of Arab origin, knelt down to speak so that we were at eye level.
“I, too, am fed up with waiting to have sex,” she said, referring to the experience I had related in the reading. “I’m 32 and there’s no one I want to marry. How do I get over the fear that God will hate me if I have sex before marriage?”
I hear this a lot. My email inbox is jammed with messages from women who, like me, are of Middle Eastern and Muslim descent. They write to vent about how to “get rid of this burden of virginity,” or to ask about hymen reconstruction surgery if they’re planning to marry someone who doesn’t know their sexual history, or just to share their thoughts about sex.
Countless articles have been written on the sexual frustration of men in the Middle East — from the jihadi supposedly drawn to armed militancy by the promise of virgins in the afterlife to ordinary Arab men unable to afford marriage. Far fewer stories have given voice to the sexual frustration of women in the region or to an honest account of women’s sexual experiences, either within or outside marriage.
I am not a cleric, and I am not here to argue over what religion says about sex. I am an Egyptian, Muslim woman who waited until she was 29 to have sex and has been making up for lost time. My upbringing and faith taught me that I should abstain until I married. I obeyed this until I could not find anyone I wanted to marry and grew impatient. I have come to regret that it took my younger self so long to rebel and experience something that gives me so much pleasure.
We barely acknowledge the sexual straitjacket we force upon women. When it comes to women, especially Muslim women in the Middle East, the story seems to begin and end with the debate about the veil. Always the veil. As if we don’t exist unless it’s to express a position on the veil.
So where are the stories on women’s sexual frustrations and experiences? I spent much of last year on a book tour that took me to 12 countries. Everywhere I went — from Europe and North America to India, Nigeria and Pakistan — women, including Muslim women, readily shared with me their stories of guilt, shame, denial and desire. They shared because I shared.

Many cultures and religions prescribe the abstinence that was indoctrinated in me. When I was teaching at the University of Oklahoma in 2010, one of my students told the class that she had signed a purity pledge with her father, vowing to wait until she married before she had sex. It was a useful reminder that a cult of virginity is specific neither to Egypt, my birthplace, nor to Islam, my religion. Remembering my struggles with abstinence and being alone with that, I determined to talk honestly about the sexual frustration of my 20s, how I overcame the initial guilt of disobedience, and how I made my way through that guilt to a positive attitude toward sex.
It has not been easy for my parents to hear their daughter talk so frankly about sex, but it has opened up a world of other women’s experiences. In many non-Western countries, speaking about such things is scorned as “white” or “Western” behavior. But when sex is surrounded by silence and taboo, it is the most vulnerable who are hurt, especially girls and sexual minorities.
In New York, a Christian Egyptian-American woman told me how hard it was for her to come out to her family. In Washington, a young Egyptian woman told the audience that her family didn’t know she was a lesbian. In Jaipur, a young Indian talked about the challenge of being gender nonconforming; and in Lahore, I met a young woman who shared what it was like to be queer in Pakistan.
My notebooks are full of stories like these. I tell friends I could write the manual on how to lose your virginity.
Many of the women who share them with me, I realize, enjoy some privilege, be it education or an independent income. It is striking that such privilege does not always translate into sexual freedom, nor protect women if they transgress cultural norms.
But the issue of sex affects all women, not just those with money or a college degree. Sometimes, I hear the argument that women in the Middle East have enough to worry about simply struggling with literacy and employment. To which my response is: So because someone is poor or can’t read, she shouldn’t have consent and agency, the right to enjoy sex and her own body?
The answer to that question is already out there, in places like the blog Adventures From the Bedroom of African Women, founded by the Ghana-based writer Nana Darkoa Sekyiamah, and the Mumbai-based Agents of Ishq, a digital project on sex education and sexual life. These initiatives prove that sex-positive attitudes are not the province only of so-called white feminism. As the writer Mitali Saran put it, in an anthology of Indian women’s writing: “I am not ashamed of being a sexual being.”
My revolution has been to develop from a 29-year-old virgin to the 49-year-old woman who now declares, on any platform I get: It is I who own my body. Not the state, the mosque, the street or my family. And it is my right to have sex whenever, and with whomever, I choose.

2016 Budget: Buhari promises immediate release of N350bn for capital projects

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised the immediate release of N350 billion into the economy in order to reflate it.
The N350 billion will be for capital projects.
The President revealed these on Friday in his speech at the 2016 Budget signing ceremony at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said unlike the President Goodluck Jonathan administration that budgeted N18 billion for roads, the present budget has N200 billion provision for the sector.
He said: “The signing of the budget today will trigger concerted efforts to reflate the Nigerian economy, a key element of which is an immediate injection of N350 billion into the economy by way of capital projects.
“To illustrate our renewed commitment to infrastructural development, the 2016 budget allocates over N200 billion to road construction as against a paltry N18 billion allocated for same purpose in the 2015 budget.”
The President, who praised the leadership of the National Assembly, Senate President Bukola Saraki and House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu Dogara, equally landed Nigerians for their patience while the consideration of the 2016 Budget lasted.
Buhari said: “The budget is intended to signpost a renewal of our commitment to restoring the budget as a serious article of faith with the Nigerian people. This Administration is committed to ensuring that henceforth the annual appropriation bill is presented to the National Assembly in time for the passage of the Act before the beginning of the fiscal year.
“Through the 2016 budget, aptly titled “Budget of Change”, the government seeks to fulfill its own side of the social contract. The Budget I have signed into law provides for aggregate expenditures of N6.06trn. Further details of the approved budget, as well as our Strategic Implementation Plan for the 2016 budget, will be provided by the Honourable Minister of Budget and National Planning.”
President Buhari, who hammered on the fact that his administration would no relent in the fight against corruption, also spoke of the intensification of efforts to diversify the economy.
He said: “We are working night and day to diversify the economy so that we never again have to rely on one commodity to survive as a country. So that we can produce the food we eat, make our own textiles, produce most of the things we use. We intend to create the environment for our young peoples to be able to innovate and create jobs through technology.
“I cannot promise you that this will be an easy journey, but in the interest of so much and so many we must tread this difficult path. I can assure you that this government you have freely elected will work with honesty and dedication, day and night to ensure that our country prospers and that the prosperity benefits all Nigerians.”

Obama Makes Case Against Donald Trump, Saying Presidency ‘Is Not a Reality Show’

WASHINGTON — President Obama implored journalists on Friday to subject Donald J. Trump’s statements and proposals to intense scrutiny now that he is the presumptive Republican nominee for president, saying the 2016 White House campaign should not be treated like a political carnival.
“We are in serious times, and this is a really serious job,” Mr. Obama said after being asked about Mr. Trump at a news conference. “This is not entertainment. This is not a reality show. This is a contest for the presidency of the United States. Every candidate, every nominee, needs to be subject to exacting standards and genuine scrutiny.”
And he said Republican voters must now confront the choice they made in the primaries.
“Their standard-bearer at the moment is Donald Trump,” Mr. Obama said. “Republican voters are going to have to make a decision about whether this is the guy who speaks for them and represents their values.”
In particular, he added, “Republican women, voters, are going to have to decide, ‘Is that the guy I feel comfortable with representing me and what I care about?’ ”
Taking questions from reporters at the White House for the first time since Mr. Trump became the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee on Tuesday, the president said he was concerned that coverage of Mr. Trump and other candidates had emphasized “the spectacle and the circus” instead of the serious issues at stake for the country.
The comments were a preview of what aides say will be a vigorous presence by Mr. Obama in the general election campaign. Mr. Trump and Mr. Obama have a tense history that includes Mr. Trump’s decision to lead the “birther” movement that questioned where the president was born.
On Friday, Mr. Obama’s comments about Mr. Trump were restrained in tone. But he made it clear he believed that Mr. Trump’s proposals and statements would not hold up to scrutiny.
“He has a long record that needs to be examined,” he said, adding that candidates who said things that could “threaten war” or had the “potential for upending our critical relationships with other countries” needed to be critically examined.
Asked a moment later about Mr. Trump’s Twitter post on Thursday of himself eating a taco bowl, Mr. Obama seemed amused.
“I have no thoughts on Mr. Trump’s tweets,” he said. “As a general rule, I don’t pay attention to Mr. Trump’s tweets.”
Mr. Obama also said he was pleased that the United States economy had added 160,000 jobs in April, though he cautioned that “the global economy, as many people here are aware, is not growing as fast as it should be.”
He said his administration was taking actions to crack down on tax evasion like the kind exposed by the so-called Panama Papers. He said the new rules would help regulators track the flow of money by requiring banking institutions to report the real names of people who open accounts.
But he called on Congress to broaden those efforts through legislation, saying, “We’re not going to be able to complete this job unless Congress acts as well.”

Jigawa receives 1m litres of petrol – Gov. Badaru

Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar

Gov. Muhammmad Badaru of Jigawa on Friday said the state had received allocation of one million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) also known as petrol this month, for distribution to filling stations.
Badaru disclosed this while speaking with newsmen in Dutse on measures taken to address fuel scarcity in the state.
He said that the Chairman of Petroleum Distribution Task Force in the state was working to ensure that the product was distributed to filling stations across the state and also sold at the approved pump price.
According to him, the PMS was allocated to the state by the Federal Government.
“The task force in the state is doing a wonderful job and I can assure you the product would be fairly distributed to ensure that motorists get it,” he said.
The governor dispelled rumours that in next few months, the state would not be able to pay workers’ salaries due to the decline in its monthly allocation from the Federation Account.
He said with the recent appreciation of price of crude oil, he was optimistic that the state’s allocation would henceforth improve.
