Woman killed in Kano for alleged blasphemy

.

An unidentified woman was yesterday killed at Yan Robobi in Kofar Wambai market inKani by an irate mob, who accused her of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed.
Sources revealed that the woman did not belong to any association in the market, making it difficult for any of the traders to contact security operatives to avert the disaster before she was eventually hacked to death by the angry mob.
It was also gathered that the woman, who sold plastic wares, was in the company of her husband when she was brutally murdered.
The incident was said to have occured when the market was preparing to close for the day’s business.
The victim was accused of blasphemy against Prophet Mohammed during a religious argument, which ensued within the market.
An eyewitness who spoke on account of anonymity, said some youths armed with dangerous weapons, attacked and slit the woman’s throat to the chagrin of other traders in the market.
It was also learnt that the remains of the woman had been deposited at the morgue, while investigation is in progress.
The spokesman of the state police command, Musa Magaji Majia, confirmed the incident.

Lead Singer Of Christian Rock Band Admits He’s Gay

1a1

In news that shocked the entire Christian community, lead singer of Christian Rock group Everyday Sunday, Trey Pearson,  has come out to admit he’s gay.
Pearson is married with a wife and two children and in a letter to his fans and all Christians admitted that he’d been fighting the urges since he was a teenager.
He claims he never wanted to be gay but has now realised he had to be true to himself.
You can read his letter below.
“I was scared of what God would think and what all of these people I loved would think about me; so it never was an option for me. I have been suppressing these attractions and feelings since adolescence. I’ve tried my whole life to be straight. I married a girl, and I even have two beautiful little kids.
“My daughter, Liv, is six and my son, Beckham, is two. I had always romanticized the idea of falling in love with a woman; and having a family had always been my dream. In many ways, that dream has come true. But I have also come to realize a lot of time has passed in my life pushing away, blocking out and not dealing with real feelings going on inside of me.
“I have tried not to be gay for more than 20 years of my life. I found so much comfort as a teen in 1 Samuel 18-20 and the intimacy of Jonathan and David. I thought and hoped that such male intimacy could fulfill that void I felt in my desire for male companionship. I always thought if I could find these intimate friendships, then that would be enough.”

Pearson had revealed that up until his wedding night he’d never made out with a girl, he says that he has “mixed feelings”  about the changes he’s encountered.
He continued,
“I was taught to handle this growing up, how much it has hurt me and the unintentional pain I have brought Lauren, I wouldn’t have the friendship I now have with her, and we wouldn’t have our two amazing, beautiful children. But if I keep trying to push this down it will end up hurting her even more
“I am never going to be able to change how I am, and no matter how healthy our relationship becomes, it’s never going to change what I know deep down: that I am gay. Lauren has been the most supportive, understanding, loving and gracious person I could ever ask for, as I have come to face this. And now I am trying to figure out how to co-parent while being her friend, and how to raise our children.”
His revelation has Sparked mixed reactions in the Christian community with some criticising him for getting married stating that it was fraudulent.
He’s also gotten a huge outpouring of support from the LGBT community.  Others still have stated that he should be understood and not judged even if they don’t agree with his decision.

Essence of marriage is to procreate, says Catholic priest

PHOTO: google.com/search

The Administrator, Corpus Christi Cathedral Port Harcourt, Rev. Fr. Bartholomew Uzoma has said that the essence of marriage is for procreation.
Speaking during the solemnisation of Holy Matrimony between Rachel and Marco Purgatorio in Port Harcourt recently, he said the essence of marriage is not only for companionship.
“If the essence of marriage is companionship alone, a man could find a male folk to marry. There must be an element of procreation.”
He said that Purgatorio, who is the General Manager of Tethys-Plantgeria Ltd., a Port Harcourt based Diving and Marine Contractors, believes in Catholic doctrine, and that was why he decided to look for a virtuous woman to marry.
Describing the marriage between Purgatorio who is Italian and Rachel, a Nigerian, as a union of people of two cultures, he admonished them to stand together and show love to their family and God.
“He sometimes wears Nigerian clothes. Marco must be patient with his wife and teach her his culture. We rejoice with them. They need our prayers and support.”

The 60 Richest, Most Successful Self-Made Women In America

Forbes’ second annual definitive tally of America’s wealthiest, most successful self-made women includes 60 trailblazers – 10 more than last year – who have crashed ceilings through invention and innovation. These women, who are worth a combined $53 billion, have created some of the nation’s best known brands, such as Gap, Spanx, Proactiv and Vera Bradley. A number of them have also helped build some of the most successful companies in tech,  including Facebook, eBay and Google, while still others got rich entertaining millions through their music, books or TV shows.
The richest self-made woman in America is Diane Hendricks, who owns ABC Supply, the largest wholesale distributor of roofing and siding in the country. The daughter of dairy farmers, she started the Wisconsin business in 1982 with her late husband Ken. Today Hendricks is worth $4.9 billion, $1.2 billion more than last year when she came in second. That jump also gives her bragging rights as the year’s biggest gainer. She is one of 17 billionaires in the ranks.

Other notable women with 10-figure fortunes include Oprah Winfrey, who moves up three spots to number two, thanks in part to her new ties to Weight Watchers. Since picking up a 10% stake in the diet empire and becoming its spokesperson last October, its stock has gained some 90%. Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg also got a big boost. Her fortune is now $1.4 billion, up a third from a year ago thanks to the social network’s strong results, making her one of the year’s biggest gainers. Sandberg, who got that job eight years ago, has helped oversee the company’s market capitalization grow by a staggering $328 billion.

The youngest person in the ranks is 26-year-old Taylor Swift, who makes her debut at number 60 with a net worth of $250 million, thanks to her 1989 tour, which grossed a quarter of a billion dollars last year. The only twenty-something in the mix, she is one of 13 newcomers. Among the other notable fresh faces are Carolyn Rafaelian, founder of jewelry brand Alex + Ani; actress-turned-entrepreneur Jessica Alba, whose Honest Company was valued by investors at $1.7 billion last year; and Vera Bradley cofounders Patricia Miller and Barbara Bradley Baekgaard. The pair, who were neighbors and friends, got the idea to make colorful bags while at an airport in Atlanta. They each borrowed $250 from their husbands and got to work in Baekgaard’s basement. Today Vera Bradley sells half a billion dollars worth of bags and other accessories a year.
Altogether 16 of the most successful self-made women made their fortunes in fashion or retail, more than any other sector. Technology was second with 13, but six of those were C-Suite executives hired at technology companies in the early days, meaning only seven founded their businesses.
Recommended by Forbes
The year’s biggest percentage gainers are dermatologists Kathy Fields and Katie Rodan, who together created acne treatment Proactiv and launched skin-care company Rodan + Fields. Revenues hit $627 million in 2015, up 90% from the previous year, with more than 150,000 independent consultants peddling products. That in turn helped boost their fortunes 72% in the past year to $550 million apiece.
The pair are also two of 25 list members who reside in California, more than three times the number of women in  any other state. New York, home to eight women on the list, is a not-so-close second.  Another Californian is newcomer Toni Ko, who sold her cosmetics brand NYX to L’Oreal for $500 million. Born in Korea, she is also one of 16 list members born outside the U.S.
One notable Californian not in the ranks is last year’s top ranking female, Elizabeth Holmes. The biotech entrepreneur drops out altogether after Theranos, the blood testing firm she founded, was hit with allegations that its products didn’t work and is now being investigated by several federal agencies. After speaking to a dozen sources, Forbes concluded that the company, once valued by investors at $9 billion, is worth just $800 million,  and that she herself won’t see much of anything anytime soon as investors with preferred shares get their money back first.
Holmes is one of three people from last year’s list who failed to make the cut; the other two,  Martine Rothblatt, CEO of United Therapeutics, and Sachiko Kuno, co-founder of Sucampo Pharmaceuticals, both just missed the cut due to lower share prices on the day we finalized net worths.

After losing $1.6billion yesterday, Larry Ellison remains world's 7th richest man

Larry Ellison's net worth drops $1.6 Billion after former Oracle employee files Whistleblower Lawsuit

Oracle chairman Larry Ellison

Oracle ORCL +0.59% founder and chairman Larry Ellison lost $1.6 billion Thursday as the stock market reacted to a whistleblower lawsuit filed against his software giant on Wednesday. A former Oracle employee claims that she was fired after speaking up about incorrect accounting at Oracle Cloud Services, according to a complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco.
After the news broke Wednesday night, Oracle stock dropped in after-hours trading and opened Thursday down nearly 4% from yesterday. The stock hit a low of $38.08 around noon Eastern and closed at $38.66, ending the day as it started, off 4%. Because the bulk of Ellison’s net worth is in Oracle stock, a small drop in the stock can impact his net worth by billions of dollars. Ellison ended the day with a $48.1 billion fortune, holding on to his rank as the world’s seventh richest person despite losing $1.6 billion.
In her whistleblower complaint, former Oracle senior finance manager Svetlana Blackburn says she was fired after refusing to do accounting she thought was improper and threatening to speak out about it. In the complaint, she claims that Oracle management “was trying (and trying to push her) to fit square data into round holes, in an effort to bolster Oracle Cloud Services financial reports that would be paraded before company leadership as well as the investing public.”
Oracle spokesperson Deborah Hellinger wrote in a statement: ”We are confident that all our cloud accounting is proper and correct. This former employee worked at Oracle for less than a year and did not work in the accounting group.”
The market’s negative reaction to the lawsuit highlights the important of Oracle’s small but growing cloud business. In its third quarter earnings report in March, Oracle announced that its total cloud revenues were $735 million, up 44% in constant currency from the same period a year earlier. Cloud revenue made up just 8.2% of Oracle’s total $9 billion revenue in the quarter. “Our cloud business is now in a hyper-growth phase,” said Oracle CEO Safra Catz, who ranks No. 28 on Forbes’ list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women. Because Catz owns so much less stock than Ellison, her net worth only dropped about $10 million to an estimated $505 million at the end of the day Thursday.

In the complaint, Blackburn claimed that she was instructed to “add millions of dollars in accruals to financial reports” by her supervisors. Blackburn said she believed the data would be used to “paint a rosier picture than actually existed on the ground” and threatened to speak out. According to the complaint, executives above Blackburn allegedly added the accruals despite Blackburn’s misgivings, and her supervisor told her she was “irritating” for complaining about it. Blackburn says she was fired weeks later on October 15, 2015, despite having received a positive performance review in August 2015.
In her statement, Hellinger said that Blackburn was “terminated for poor performance.” Oracle plans to counter-sue for malicious prosecution.
Blackburn’s attorneys, Daniel Velton and VJ Chetty, could not be reached for additional comment in time for publishing.

Former Celsea boss appointed as new Aston Villa manager

Roberto Di Matteo

Championship club Aston Villa have confirmed the appointment of Roberto Di Matteo as their new manager.
Former Chelsea midfielder Di Matteo, 46, last occupied a coaching role at Schalke, who he left in May 2015 after seven months in charge.
Previously, the Italian has managed at Chelsea — where he won the Champions League and FA Cup in 2012 — West Bromwich Albion and MK Dons.
Di Matteo led West Brom to promotion from the Championship in the 2009-10 campaign, something Villa will be hoping for after their relegation from the Premier League this season.
He said on the club’s official website: “It’s a wonderful honour for me to become manager of this great football club and I’m looking forward to the challenge of taking Aston Villa back to its rightful place.”
Di Matteo succeeds Remi Garde at Villa Park after the Frenchman left in March, having replaced Tim Sherwood at the struggling club.

Report: Goodluck Jonathan has Left Otueke For Unknown Destination

Former President Goodluck Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Jonathan

Ex-president Goodluck Jonathan has allegedly departed Otuoke for an unknown destination this afternoon.
Barely hours after news of his return to Bayelsa was made public, Jonathan is nowhere to be found in Otueke.
While some sources have said he left for Port Harcourt en route Abuja, others have alleged that those locations were made up to keep people away from Jonathan.
According to Sahara Reporters, Jonathan’s departure from Otuoke was discovered after some of his kinsmen thronged his Otuoke home this Thursday afternoon, June 2, only to be told he had left for Port Harcourt.
It was also revealed that some security men were denying visitors access to the former president’s house.
However, there is a bit of confusion as sources are yet to identify Jonathan’s presence either in either Port Harcourt or Abuja.
It was recently alleged that Jonathan had gone on exile to the Ivory Coast to evade arrest from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) who are currently investigating various corruption charges in his administration.
Goodluck Jonathan has denied the allegations.

Why Nigeria is a 'childish' country

Crisis As APC Breaks Into Factions, New Party Leaders Appointed

APC
APC

Nigeria is one of the countries with no regard for the common people, its leaders only wallow in the selfish and immature act of addressing only on issues of their party and on that which involves money. A nation with this kind of childish attitude will never advance.

Faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) known as APC Akida has appointed its leaders at the state level.
The group, which has been operating in Kaduna for a while, has finally decided to come out in full force with the appointment of state executives.
Hafsat M. Baba was made secretary of the APC Akida, Alhaji Ibrahim Yaro became deputy convener and Mr Tom Maiyashi emerged as convener.
Mr Tom Maiyashi, the party convener said the faction was established because the APC had been hijacked by powerful people in the state and there was need to protect their legitimate interest.
He explained that in the coming weeks, the APC Akida will intensify its campaign to mobilise members.
“We believe in playing responsible and constructive roles because the government appears to have shut out basic involvement of citizens in governance,”
“We came on board because our party structures do not exist or function in a manner prescribed by our party’s constitution. It does not protect the interests of our members, and one of our key goals is to help reestablish party structure at all levels,” Maiyashi said.

Are Reps backing military action against N’D Avengers?

The House of Representatives said on Thursday that it was in support of any action taken so far by the Federal Government to contain the rising attacks on oil pipelines in the Niger Delta by the Niger Delta Avengers. Now I wonder if this is a right move.
Attacks on oil installations lately have reportedly resulted in a drop of daily crude oil production output from 2.2 million barrels to less than 1.5mbpd.
The government responded to the development by deploying soldiers in the Niger Delta creeks in a bid to quell the attacks.
Speaking on the development at the National Assembly on Thursday, the Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, said the House was in support of the government’s actions.
Namdas applauded the role of the military in all the flashpoints of the country like the North-East, where men and equipment had been deployed to bring escalating security situations under control. The Punch reports that Namdas stated, “We are very comfortable with what the Federal Government is doing.
“We will support the government to go ahead with what they are doing. We hope very soon, this issue will be resolved.”
Namdas hinted that the House Committee on Defence had also concluded a tour of the Niger Delta to assess the security situation of the area, adding that the committee would soon submit a report on its findings to the House.
The attacks had also been partly blamed for the decline in electricity supply in the country, owing to disruption of gas installations that power generation plants.
But in plenary, the House summoned the Minister of Power/Works/Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), to appear before lawmakers to explain why the power situation had worsened in recent times.
The House also summoned power generation companies, distribution companies, the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company and other stakeholders in the power sector to give their perspectives on the matter.
A member from Edo State, Mr. Johnson Agbonayinma, while moving a motion on the subject, recalled that as of 2015, power generation stood around “4,000 megawatts.”
Agbonayinma, who expressed concern that investors were relocating from the country due to poor power supply, added that he could not understand why generation was now below “1,500 megawatts” in a post-privatisation era.
“The Minister of Power, Gencos, Discos and all the other stakeholders; they should come and explain what is happening,” he stated.
The motion was endorsed in a majority voice vote at the session, which was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara.
In a separate resolution, the House mandated the Committees on Human Rights, National Security and Intelligence to investigate the May 30 clash between security forces and members of the Independent People of Biafra in Onitsha, Anambra State.
The House observed that “unarmed civilians” were killed during the clash, advising the Federal Government to adopt a “more efficient mechanism for engagement with all aggrieved elements that threaten our homeland security and the territorial integrity of our sovereignty.”
It was the Deputy Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Chukwuka Onyeama, who moved a motion on the killings under matters of urgent public importance.
Onyeama hails from Ogbaru Federal Constituency of the state, which is on the bank of the River Niger close to Onitsha.
Part of the motion read, “The House is concerned that in spite of the outcry, investigations and wide condemnation of this trend, there seems to be no cessation of same.
“Aware that the rights to freedom of association, expression and peaceful assembly are enshrined in the constitution of our great country, Nigeria;
“Further aware that the rule of law and respect for rights of citizens are cardinal ingredients for the survival of our democracy and consolidation on our democratic gains.”

Couple discover decomposed body in cupboard after moving into home

A young couple from the Bronx, New York got a nasty surprise when they moved into their dream home. An unpleasant Smell led them to a cupboard where they discovered the decomposed remains of a man along with a note, apparently left by the killer, that read: "Sorry for the smell."

According to the New York Daily News , they were allowed to move in because the landlord had not seen Sidney Harris (pictured above), the original tenant, for some time. But on Monday night, ex-convict Harris, 64, was found dead and wrapped in plastic and sheets in a cupboard by the couple.

The couple spotted a foot sticking out of a pile of blankets, investigators arrived to find blood and the bizarre note.

A tenant thought to be the building manager told police he thought Harris was in hospital and “wouldn’t be back” while a neighbour said the smell was so bad they could not sleep.

Harris is understood to have died from multiple skull fractures but it is not clear how long he had been dead. A murder investigation is underway.

Read how the 'Roots' producers found their new Kunta Kinte

When History announced that it was putting together a remake of the celebrated 1977 miniseries Roots, the most pressing matter for producers Will Packer and Mark Wolper was to find the right actor to play its iconic main character, Kunta Kinte. “We knew if we didn’t do that right, everything else was going to fall apart,” Packer explained to EW.

“It turns out that the first guy who comes along is this guy Malachi Kirby,” Wolper explained. “And we go, ‘This guy is fantastic but we can’t possibly stop the search!’ So we spent all the money and all the time going around, meeting auditioning, doing, and we came right back around and realized, it’s him.”
As far as playing such an important role, Kirby tried to to do “as little acting as possible.” To accomplish that, he learned the customs and language that Kunta Kinte was versed in himself, and he credits the realism of the production with getting helping him feel in character.
“The way we shot it, I didn’t have to imagine so much,” Kirby said. “I didn’t have to imagine what it would feel like to be on a slave ship — they built a real ship and they put 200 people inside it, into the real parameters of what it would’ve been. They chained us up and we were screaming and wailing.”
History will air Roots over four consecutive nights at 9 p.m. ET beginning May 30. It will also be simulcast on Lifetime and A&E.

Mourinho has wanted Man Utd job since 2010 – Desailly

Marcel Desailly says Jose Mourinho has been targeting the Manchester United job since leaving Inter Milan.
Desailly was at a legends match with Mourinho ahead of the 66th Fifa Congress in Mexico in May and, speaking at a press event in Dublin on Wednesday, the former France and Chelsea defender said the Portuguese was planning for Old Trafford from at least 2010.
After leaving Inter, Mourinho joined Real Madrid, where he spent three years, before returning to Chelsea in 2013. He parted company with the Blues in December, before being appointed United boss in May.
“I was in Mexico with him at a FIFA conference,” Desailly said. “Remember, when he left Inter Milan to go to Real Madrid [in 2010]?
“At the time, he said he would come back to England. But his plan was to go to Manchester United, not Chelsea.
“This was his main target. He respected the club. The worldwide exposure is through Manchester United.
“Now, he has got the key from them. The other one [Louis van Gaal] spent €200 million. He will spend another €250m, also. And he’ll build up something good, I’m sure.
“He has some problems because he has Juan Mata, who he didn’t want at Chelsea.
“I’m sure [Marouane] Fellaini won’t be playing in midfield. He has a lot of things to work on.”

The Youngest Of America's Richest Self-Made Women

According to the Forbes, Taylor Swift Is The Youngest Of America's Richest Self-Made Women

Going For The Gold: Swift has plenty of hardware–and a net worth to match–despite her young age. (Photo by Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images).
At age 26, Taylor Swift has already won plenty of accolades: 10 Grammys, five Guinness World records and even an Emmy.
A handful of honors have come from FORBES, including Swift’s selection to our inaugural 30 Under 30 list, six consecutive appearances in our Celebrity 100 issue–and, now, the distinction of being the youngest name on our list of America’s wealthiest self-made women.
Swift clocks in at $250 million, claiming the No. 60 spot on a list that includes moguls such as Oprah Winfrey ($3.1 billion), Tory Burch ($750 million) and Diane von Furstenberg ($340 million) and fellow musicians like Madonna ($560 million), Barbra Streisand ($370 million) and Beyonce Knowles ($265 million).
In order to keep such company, Swift has transformed herself into–quite possibly–the world’s biggest pop superstar. She started out as a teenaged country singer, signing to Scott Borchetta’s fledgling Big Machine Records, eventually negotiating to own a piece of the label that’s now home to Country Cash Kings like Rascal Flatts and Tim McGraw.
As she churned out one platinum album after another–earning at least $40 million pretax in each of the past six years–she enriched not only herself and Borchetta, but fellow country centimillionaire Toby Keith. By how much, exactly? “There’s an extra comma if you added up all the money I’ve ever made,” Keith once told FORBES.
Recommended by Forbes
Swift officially left country when she launched the unapologetically poppy 1989, which moved 3.7 million units to become the top-selling album of 2014, and propelled her to a new career high payday of $80 million in 2015. This year she’s poised to set a new mark, thanks to her recent 1989 Tour, which grossed a quarter of a billion dollars last year, far more than any other tour.
At the same time, Swift has become an outspoken advocate for musicians’ rights to fair royalty rates as the industry adjusts to the streaming model, pulling her music from Spotify and penning a firm letter to Apple last year when the company initially refused to pay artists for spins generated by customers who’d signed up for a free trial of its new music service.
“We don’t ask you for free iPhones,” she wrote. “Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.”
The company quickly changed its tune, and many observers credited Swift. That’s just the sort of power that doesn’t necessarily add another zero to one’s net worth–but certainly connotes the sort of influence that, regardless of age, should make Swift right at home in this lofty group for years to come.

Forbes report: Airbnb's Three Billionaire Cofounders And 14 Others Join Gates-Buffett Giving Pledge

I have never seen in the records where wealthy Nigerians give some percentage of their income to charity - it's always about them and their family!

A recent Giving Pledge event, with (from left) Bill and Melinda Gates, Airbnb cofounder Nathan Blecharczyk, Elizabeth Blecharczyk, Airbnb cofounders Joe Gebbia and Brian Chesky, and Giving Pledge cofounder Warren Buffett (photo courtesy of Giving Pledge)
The three billionaire cofounders of online lodging website Airbnb, Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk, as well as Salesforce.com CRM -0.74% founder Marc Benioff and 13 other individuals or families, have joined the Giving Pledge, the group announced Wednesday. Members promise to give a majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.  The Airbnb cofounders are among the youngest to sign the pledge: Chesky and Gebbia are 34, and Blecharczyk is 33.
Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett created the Giving Pledge in 2010 in an effort to spur charitable giving both in the U.S. and around the world. The Pledge now counts 154 members from 16 countries, the organization said in a statement.
“This new group joining the Giving Pledge is incredibly thoughtful about their desire to give back and help solve the world’s toughest challenges through philanthropy,” Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said in a statement. “Some have been giving for decades and others are just starting out after building successful businesses, but they all see the value of giving in a bold and effective way. Melinda, Warren and I are glad to have the opportunity to learn with them and from them.”

Other billionaire newcomers to the Giving Pledge since June 2015 include Intuit founder Scott Cook and his wife Signe Ostby, mapping software mogul Jack Dangermond and his wife Laura, orthopedic surgeon-turned-inventor-and-investor Gary Michelson, Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, U.K. insurance mogul Henry Engelhardt, Dubai-based property tycoon P.N.C. Menon, and Indian biotech entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.

As the gap between the world’s richest and poorest grows, philanthropic efforts by the ultra wealthy rise in need and importance. There is no way the Giving Pledge can enforce the promise that members make when they join, but they do try to educate members about different ways to give.
The group recently gathered for an annual two-day learning conference, where both outside experts and members spoke. Topics discussed included leveraging philanthropy to drive women’s opportunities in the global economy, opportunities and challenges for giving internationally, solving environmental issues, engaging in urban renewal projects, and philanthropy’s role in advancing scientific discovery.
As Bill Gates points out, some of these people –like Salesforce founder Benioff — have been active philanthropists already, while others are just getting going.  One aim of the organizers is to change the  philanthropy is done. “Over the long-term, the Giving Pledge hopes to help shift the social norms of philanthropy toward giving more, giving sooner and giving smarter,” it said in a statement.
Here is the full list of the 17 new members announced Wednesday:
 Margaret and Sylvan Adams (Israel)
 HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz AlSaud (Saudi Arabia)
 Lynne and Marc Benioff (United States)
 Nathan and Elizabeth Blecharczyk (United States)
 Brian Chesky (United States)

Police Recruitment: 338,227 applicants shorlisted

Okiro
The Police Service Commission says it has shortlisted 338,227 applicants out of the 911,438 that applied for recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force.
The Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Mike Okiro, who disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja, said screening of successful applicants would begin on June 6 in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
Okiro explained that 44,661 were shortlisted for cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, 87,736 for cadet Inspector and 205,830 for Police Constables.
He said  “I would like to emphasise that the initial shortlisting of applicants was done electronically.
“Invitation letters were also sent to successful applicants through SMS and to their personal email addresses.”
Okiro, however, warned applicants against fake letters from criminal elements, stressing that “the invitation, states the date and venue for each person’s screening.
“Applicants will be grouped according to their local government areas and a date fixed for their screening.”
The chairman said the steps taken were aimed at avoiding overcrowding at the venue and ensuring a meticulous exercise.
He warned that no applicant would be admitted into any venue or appear on any date other than those allocated to him or her.
Okiro added that after the screening, successful candidates would be invited to a zonal screening to be held in the 12 police zonal headquarters in the country.
He said the national interview would be held in Abuja for those who were successful at the zonal screening.
He noted that the Commission had been transparent since the filling and submission of forms started, saying “I want to re-emphasis that the Commission will be guided by the rules and will be fair, transparent and ensure that the process is merit-driven.
“As a commission, we have collectively and individually swore to make this project a huge success.
“The Nigeria Police needs the best, especially now that the nation is engaged in several battles.”
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of training, Mr. Femi Adenaike, said all training schools and colleges were rehabilitated.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 262,426 applicants applied for cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police, 211,832 applied for Cadet Inspector and 437,144 for Police Constables.
President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the recruitment of 10,000 policemen into the nation’s Police Force to reinforce the police for better service.
