Naira extends loss at parallel market, exchanged at N380 to the dollar

While the cost of living rises in Nigeria, the country's is also rising

The Naira on Monday depreciated further against the dollar at the parallel market.
The Nigerian currency exchanged at N380 to the dollar, from N378 it traded on Friday, while it exchanged against the Pound Sterling and the Euro at N495 and N415, respectively.
At the Bureau De Change segment of the market, the currency exchanged at N378 for the dollar, N490 for the Pound and N413 against the Euro.
It, however, appreciated at the interbank segment as it closed at N316.37 from N319.70 it posted on Friday.
Meanwhile, traders at the market said that the scarcity of the greenback was stifling activities at the market.
They urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to intervene in the foreign exchange market to ensure greater stability of the naira.

Cost of driving licence remains N6,350

Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi
The Federal Road Safety Corps has said the cost of driving licence remains N6,350 and does not expect any driver to pay more than the amount to obtain any licence whose expiry period is three years.
It said no price increase had been announced, adding that a five-year duration was only added to the three-year driving licence with a cost of N10,350 to give motorists a new option.
The Corps Marshal/Chief Executive Officer, FRSC, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, gave the indication while speaking at a workshop in Lagos and warned motorists not to patronise touts.
He described the action of driving with a fake driving licence as a serious offence.
“We have not increased the cost of processing the driving licence. It remains N6,350. What we have done is to give people the option of taking either for three years or five years. The five-year driving licence is available at N10,350,” he said.
Oyeyemi also said the corps would come hard on violators of speed limit, noting that accident rate attributed to the factor was on the increase.

In Oyo, TUC threatens showdown if workers' salaries are not paid in 5 days

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), Oyo State Chapter threatened the state government to pay workers' outstanding salaries or expect shut down of labour activities.
 Abiola Ajimobi
The Union issued a five-day ultimatum over the non-payment of seven months salaries and pensions to workers.
The TUC Caretaker Chairman, Mr Andrew Emelieze, disclosed this when he addressed newsmen in Ibadan on Monday, August 1.
Emelieze said that the union would embark on a mass action if government fails to address its demands.
He said the five days ultimatum is an added opportunity for government to the issues, adding that the initial 15-day ultimatum expired on August 1.
The TUC had on July 11 stormed the state government secretariat to submit its demand to the government, issuing a 15-day ultimatum.
TUC's letter was received by the Head of Service, Mr Soji Eniade, on behalf of the government.
Emelieze said the state government did not consult with them while the ultimatum lasted, inspite of their correspondence to them.
"We are not part of the unholy agreement between the state chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the state government that suspended the seven weeks strike on July 25,"  he said.
"We hereby condemn the unholy alliance and resolution between them. We are going to occupy the state secretariat if government fails to heed to our demands.
"We will bring our mattresses and pillows to the secretariat, while some will go on hunger strike,’’ Emelieze said.
He faulted the planned restructuring of the workforce by the state government, describing it as a ploy to retrench some workers.

The TUC chairman said that more than 30 per cent of the wage bill claimed by the state government was used in paying political office holders.
He also appealed to the Federal Government to cushion the economic hardship experienced across the country, saying the cost of living in the country is  on the increase.
Governor Abiola Ajimobi, had on July 30 in Ibadan, the state capital, told newsmen that there is no truth in the news that the state government is planning to retrench workers but to restructure.
Ajimobi said he will restructure to make every worker in the service of the state functional and productive, adding that they will all be engaged.
On the outstanding salary, he said that the status of the state’s finance was made clear to the labour unions before the resolution to suspend the seven weeks strike.

Death toll from July Baghdad blast rises to 323

Death toll from July Baghdad blast rises to 323
Iraqis inspect the damage at the site of a suicide bomb attack at the entrance to the town of Khales, 80 kms northeast of Baghdad, on July 25, 2016.(AFP)
One of the deadliest bombings to ever hit Iraq killed 323 people, two thirds of whom needed DNA testing to identify, the health minister said, raising an earlier toll from last month’s attack.
A suicide bomber detonated an explosives-rigged minibus in a crowded shopping area in Baghdad’s Karrada district early on July 3, sparking infernos in nearby buildings that burned many victims alive.
“One hundred and fifteen martyrs were identified directly after the bombing by their families,” health minister Adila Hamoud told a televised news conference.
But the identity of 208 more people killed in the blast, many of whose bodies were burned beyond recognition, could not be determined, and they were sent for DNA testing, Hamoud said.
She had previously said that the attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group, had killed 292 peopled, of whom 177 were unidentified.
People have been furious over delays in determining the fate of their loved ones, and have sharply criticised the Iraqi government for failing to protect them.
IS overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014, but Iraqi forces have since regained significant territory from the jihadists.
The extremists have responded to battlefield setbacks by striking back against civilians, and experts have warned there may be more bombings as the jihadists continue to lose ground.

Protect yourself: seven STDs you can get from having unprotected sex

genital warts

We all agree sex is a pleasurable activity. But you need to be careful and aware that you can contract certain sexually transmitted diseases too.

Gonorrhea: Gonorrhea is another STD that you should be aware of. It often goes undiagnosed as the symptoms are not really apparent. Men may notice pain while passing urine, as well as whitish or greenish discharge from the penis. Women may experience pain while urinating, vaginal bleeding between periods and increased amounts of vaginal discharge.

Syphilis: The damage caused by syphilis can extend far beyond the genitals and affect a person’s skin, mucous membranes and even organs like the brain and the heart. The disease can be treated with antibiotics if diagnosed early, but may require surgical intervention if brought to notice late.

Chlamydia: Chlamydia infects the penis as well as the vagina and is caused by the bacteria chlamydia trachomatis. The consequences of this disease affect women far more seriously than men and can cause permanent damage to their reproductive system.

Genital herpes: Genital herpes is a horrific STD that can cause the appearance of blisters on genital areas. If left untreated, these blisters can grow in size and break open, causing much pain. The fluid in the blisters carries the virus.

Genital warts: Caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), this STD can cause the appearance of horrific looking small growths around the genital area. Usually, these warts don’t cause severe pain but may cause itching and bleeding.

Hepatitis: Hepatitis is a disease that can cause liver inflammation. There are five types of the disease: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis D and Hepatitis E. Vaccination can prevent some types of Hepatitis. Some of the common symptoms that can be seen in severe cases of hepatitis are: jaundice (yellow skin and eyes), dark coloured urine, nausea and extreme fatigue.

HIV/AIDS: Surely, the most commonly known STD, HIV/AIDS is a fatal disease where the immune system is affected. After a point, the immune system becomes so weak that it is unable to guard against any disease or infection. Some of the symptoms include persistent fever, severe malnutrition and extreme fatigue.

Reasons you have problems getting an erection

Unable to perform sexually and not achieving an erection can be quite embarrassing and can also take a toll on one's psychological health. Read the possible causes of not having erection:

Stress & anxiety: A stressful event sets off the natural alarm system, and the body produces excess stress hormones. These hormones increase the heart rate and elevate blood pressure, which are high-risk factors for erectile dysfunction (ED).

Obesity: Obesity hampers the functioning of hormones like testosterone and puts pressure on the heart, making you tired easily. The psychological aspects of obesity can lead to ED.
 Blood pressure medicines
Blood pressure medicines: Diuretics, beta blockers, alpha blockers are meant to lower blood pressure and dilate blood vessels, making it difficult to sustain an erection.

Antidepressants: Prescribed for depression, anxiety disorders, smoking cessation, chronic pain, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders, they can also interfere with erections.

Metabolic syndrome: Your metabolic rate is not maintained in this condition, which leads to weight gain, thereby, affecting your erection.

High cholesterol levels: These make it difficult to maintain an erection by interfering with the blood flow. Additionally, high levels of cholesterol also put immense pressure on your heart.

Hyperthyroidism: Elevated thyroid affects blood flow and temperature in the body. An excess of this hormone is also known to affect one’s libido, making ED a common occurrence.

Chronic kidney disease: This disease affects nerves, blood hormone levels causing erectile dysfunction.

Nigerian scammer arrested over $US60million

A 40-year-old Nigerian has been arrested for defrauding thousands of people worldwide through online scams worth more than $US60 million ($A79.02 million) dollars.
The man, identified by Interpol only as "Mike", is believed to be the leader of an international email scam targeting small to medium-sized businesses in countries including Australia, Canada, India, Malaysia, Romania, South Africa, Thailand and the United States.
In one instance, a victim was conned into paying out $US15.4 million, according to Interpol.
The suspect was arrested in southern Nigeria. He is thought to head a network of at least 40 fraudsters across Nigeria, Malaysia and South Africa, who provided malware and carried out the frauds, the agencies said.
He is also accused of laundering money in China, Europe and the US.
The 40-year-old faces charges including hacking, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.

Five Dead After Russian Helicopter Shot Down

The Mi-8 transport helicopter was apparently targeted from the ground as it returned from a humanitarian mission near Aleppo.
Three crew and two officers have been killed after a Russian military helicopter was shot down in Syria.
The Mi-8 transport helicopter was returning to Hmeimim base in Idlib province after delivering humanitarian aid to Aleppo when it came under attack from the ground on Monday, the Russian ministry said.
All five people in the aircraft were killed, according to the Kremlin.
Images shared on social media apparently showed a dead body stripped of clothes and Russian identity documents taken from the helicopter, Reuters reported.
All five people on the helicopter died
The aircraft appeared to have broken up as it crashed to the ground.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the helicopter had tried to veer away from populated areas to avoid civilian casualties and said the service personnel died a "heroic death".
He added that Moscow would continue to fight international terrorism "on all fronts", despite threats from Islamic State.
Rebel groups are staging an offensive to break a government siege on rebel-held parts of Aleppo around 25 miles from the reported crash site.
Pro-Syrian government forces on the ground are being supported by heavy air strikes in the same area.
On Sunday, IS posted a nine-minute video to YouTube calling on its members to carry out jihad in Russia.
In July, two Russian airmen were killed in Homs province when their Mi-25 helicopter was shot down. The Russian defence ministry said IS was behind that attack.
An Mi-28N helicopter gunship crashed near Homs in April, killing both crew members. The Russian military said there was no evidence it had come under fire.
Some 18 Russian service personnel have been killed since Moscow began airstrikes in Syria in September last year.

JAMB makes a U-turn, withdraws candidates’ lists sent to varsities

Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has withdrawn the list of recommended candidates for admission it earlier sent to universities and other tertiary institutions.
The announcement was contained in a statement by the spokesperson for JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday in Abuja.
According to him, the decision was to ensure that universities perform their statutory responsibility of selecting candidates and referring them to JAMB for confirmation.
This, JAMB stated, should be done in consonance with the admission criteria of merit, catchment area and educationally disadvantaged states as directed by the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, during the policy committee meeting.
Benjamin said the earlier list was sent to help fast-track the process of admission so as to allow other tiers of tertiary institutions conduct their admission for the 2016/2017 academic session.
“Candidates should not panic because this is part of the process of the 2016 admission exercise. JAMB regrets any inconvenience this decision would have caused the tertiary institutions,” he stated.
The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, had while given admission conditions for the 2016/2017 academic session, said  it would only give approval “after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions had been done.”
He added, “JAMB wishes to state that the latest list of candidates sent to all the tertiary institutions contains candidates who qualified for screening based on the individual institutions’ capacity. It’s not in any way an admission list.
“However, if this list is not sufficient for the need of any institution, such institution can source from the omnibus printout earlier sent to them by the board.
“The public and all tertiary institutions should note that admission will only be approved by the board after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.
“The list which is made up of candidates who met the national cut-off point within the set criteria are sent to the institutions. Again, for purposes of clarity, all institutions that have need for more can source from their omnibus printout as stated above. The candid intention of the board is to ensure that available spaces are adequately utilised.”
Our correspondent reports that the Federal Government had clarified its ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission procedures, saying it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the senate of any university or the academic board of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.”
Adamu had made the clarification in a statement by the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations) in the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben. Bem-Goong.
He said the clarification became necessary “following conflicting reports in the media over the roles of universities and JAMB in admission under the new dispensation.”
According to him, the role of JAMB is to conduct the UTME, compile the list of candidates whose scores meet the cut-off marks (180 and above) and send same to the universities.

Klopp: This is my squad now; we will be a challenger

Jurgen Klopp: Happy with his men
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says his side will be a “challenger” this season after declaring this is “my squad”.
This season will be Klopp’s first full campaign in charge having replaced Brendan Rodgers on October 2015 and the former Borussia Dortmund his happy with the stamp he has put on his Anfield squad.
He has brought in several new faces and claims he now has a “special quality” that was missing last season.
After finishing 21 points behind the champions Leicester in eighth, Klopp says there will be no excuses this time around as he looks to “fight” on all fronts.
“This is my squad now,” Klopp told the Daily Mirror. “After all the transfers, this time it is my team.
“There are probably no players here any more I don’t want. There are no signings I didn’t want, we have not sold anyone I didn’t want to.
“And if you have seen them in training, there is a special quality that we did not have last year.
“Above all, you can see we have created a special atmosphere, not only in our team but with our fans.
“I am happy with my team now, and all I can say is we will be a challenger, we will fight for everything, for every cup and what’ll happen in the end we will see.
“Certainly at the moment we should not look for excuses and say things like ‘I need another year’ or things like that.”

Naira to weaken further on dollar shortage

The naira is expected to continue to weaken this week on limited dollar supply as foreign portfolio investors stay on the sidelines until the Nigeria economy shows signs of recovering from the impact of currency controls, foreign exchange traders have said.
The naira had hit an all-time low of 334.50 per dollar on Wednesday, a day after the Central Bank of Nigeria hiked interest rates to try to lure foreign investors back into local assets, Reuters reported.
Forex traders said investors were pushing the naira lower to test the limit of how far it could fall, given a spread of almost 12 per cent between the official and black market dollar-naira exchange rates.
On Friday, the naira closed at 321.16 to the dollar at the interbank market, compared to 292.40 the previous Friday.
At the parallel market, the local currency closed at 380 against the greenback on Friday, compared to 378 a week earlier.
According to financial analysts and experts, the naira may weaken further, especially at the interbank market, if the CBN fails to intervene at the market this week.
“We are in a very challenging situation as a country and the CBN needs to do something urgently to stabilise the exchange rate at the interbank market,” analyst and Chief Executive Officer, Cowry Asset Management Limited, Mr. Johnson Chukwu, said.
He added, “If the CBN fails to intervene, the naira may fall further against the dollar at the interbank market. If it does, the naira may appreciate to say about 310/dollar. But the point is that the market needs sustained intervention until there is a calm that will assure the foreign investors that things are now normal.”
Chukwu believes the CBN may need to access close to $10bn facility from the World Bank to stabilise the forex market.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s cedi is expected to be firm, underpinned by inflows from offshore investors who bought government debt two weeks ago, Reuters reported.
The cedi is expected to trade steady against the dollar this week on residual forex inflows from investors who took part in a five-year domestic bond sale a fortnight ago.
The local unit has been fairly stable last week after settlement of the bond on Monday. It closed at 3.9620 to the dollar on Friday, stronger than 3.9650 a week earlier.
“The pair (cedi/dollar) is expected to remain fairly stable around 3.9650 levels on the market, even in the face of a steadily growing demand from importers,” an analyst at Dortis Research, Joseph Amponsah, said.
The Kenyan shilling is expected to post gains, boosted by expected inflows from foreign investors taking up government debt, wooed by a surge in rates.
Commercial banks quoted the shilling at 101.35/45 to the dollar, stronger than the previous week’s close of 101.45/65.
The Tanzanian shilling is seen buoyed by sagging dollar demand and increased inflows from large companies in tourism and agriculture sectors.

Romelu Lukaku will cost Chelsea £75million

Chelsea boss has his say over £75million Lukaku rumours

Romelu Lukaku: Conte refuses to discuss possible interest

Romelu Lukaku: Conte refuses to discuss possible interest

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has given his thoughts on speculation that he is keen to bring on Romelu Lukaku back to the club from Everton.
Conte, who admitted his uncertainty if Diego Costa would remain at Chelsea this season, was asked about the Blues’ striker hunt and whether a deal for Lukaku was in the offing.
It was claimed last week that the Belgium striker had made a return to Stamford Bridge his No 1 priority this summer, but Conte, when asked directly about the player, refused to comment on suggestions a deal was imminent.
“I do not want to speak about the players of other teams,” said Conte.
“This is not respectful to the club or to their players. I prefer not to speak.
“The transfer market is not the most important thing. The important thing is to build a team – a team that plays in good and bad situations and concentrates and works together.”
Lukaku was sold by Chelsea in 2014 for £28million and it was claimed that the Toffees would only consider selling their star man if a side matched their £75million valuation.

Wenger discusses Lacazette & Mahrez and admits he’s ready to spend

Alexandre Lacazette: Arsenal to make new bid

Alexandre Lacazette: Arsenal to make new bid

Arsene Wenger has refused to deny reports that the Gunners are lining up move for Alexandre Lacazette and Riyad Mahrez this summer.
Arsenal fans who want more additions this summer may be in luck as Arsene Wenger has admitted he is still looking for players to strengthen the Gunners’ squad ahead of the new season.
The North Londonders have signed three players so far this summer in Granit Xhaka, Takuma Asano and Rob Holding, but have been linked with far more big names.
“I buy players that I feel can strengthen our team,” Wenger told the club’s official website. “Today you have to be very strong inside the club when you are responsible, not just to buy [for the sake of buying].
“There’s always a wave of opinions. I must say people are better informed today – they know all the players. They tell you always that you should buy but when you ask them who to buy, they become much shorter.
“If you look at the market in Europe, there’s a lot of money available but not many players who really strengthen the teams. If you look at the teams that spend the most money in Europe, they’re not necessarily the teams that won the championships. The global investment of the clubs around us didn’t stop Leicester winning the championship.
“We are still on the market for players. [Be it] at the front or at the back – we are on the market. Unfortunately we are not alone.”
Arsenal have had a bid rejected for Lyon striker Lacazette this summer, while their interest in Leicester winger Mahrez has been documented.
On the links to both players, Wenger added: “The best way to conclude transfers is not to talk about them, which is very difficult in the press conference!
“We are on the market but I don’t want to talk specifically about any player because that makes it more difficult for me – and it’s difficult enough.”
The Gunners are understood to have had a £30m bid for Lacazette rejected during last week, and although Lyon president Jean-Michael Aulas was not expecting Arsenal to return, Sky Sports are reporting a new offer is inbound.

Wenger blasts imminent Pogba transfer as ‘complete madness’

Arsene Wenger: Thinks Pogba fee is ridiculous

Arsene Wenger: Thinks Pogba fee is ridiculous

Arsene Wenger believes Paul Pogba’s proposed £100million move to Manchester United represents the “complete madness” of the modern transfer market.
France midfielder Pogba is reportedly set to join United for a nine-figure sum and Arsenal manager Wenger, who is currently in Los Angeles with the Gunners ahead of a pre-season friendly meeting with Chivas, suggested he would not pay over the odds for any player.
Quoted in Tuttosport, he said: “It’s complete madness when measured against real life, but we live in a world in which everything that happens is geared towards moving money around.
“It’s complete madness – but it seems that if you can afford to do it, you can justify it. Football has become a global competition and that is why clubs are chucking these kinds of sums around.
“Does it make sense because the player can deliver a return on that investment? I don’t think anyone can make that call.
“Since I’ve been in the game I’ve always thought there would be a limit to how much clubs could spend on a player but it looks like I’ve been proved wrong.
“Maybe in a few years’ time we’ll be talking about fees of 200 or 300million…”

Imminent arrival of ‘top-class’ Pogba gets Rooney excited

Paul Pogba: Could return after leaving United in 2012

Paul Pogba: Could return after leaving United in 2012

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has hailed the imminent world-record signing of Paul Pogba and has recalled his memories of the player’s time at Old Trafford last time around.
Pogba left Old Trafford in 2012 as a free agent, but enjoyed three years at the club prior to his acrimonious departure.
The Frenchman has realised his potential at Juventus, and is now on the verge of rejoining the club he left as a teenager for a world-record £100m.
Discussing the possible return of his former team-mate, Rooney said that he was looking forward to playing with him again. And he kind of compares him to Marouane ‘sharp elbows’ Fellaini, which is great.
“The bruises,” Rooney told the Daily Mail, when asked of what he remembers about Pogba. “He was one of those players who, when you trained against him, somehow he would just hurt you. A knee in your side, bump into you, I don’t think he meant to do it, but it just happened.
“You didn’t even need to get into a tackle. Just go next to him and you’d find an elbow or some other sharp bit. So, if he comes, I’m looking forward to that again! But he had great ability, some of the things he could do, and he’s gone up a level since he left us.
“I hope he is going to want to return to United and prove he’s a top-class player. If he is excited to play for us, we’ll be excited to have him back. I’m sure he’ll feel there is unfinished business, and it would be a very big statement by the club if they can make it happen.”

Paul Pogba "flying to England" to seal Man Utd move

Paul Pogba is “preparing to fly to England” to complete his world record €120m move to Manchester United, according to Sky Sports.

Pogba’s protracted move to back to the club he left for nothing in 2012 has been the story of this transfer window, with Sky reporting Juventus have now agreed a deal to sell the 23-year-old Frenchman to United.
Suggestions that the dispute of the fee agent Mino Raiola will collect for his slice of the mega-deal are rumbling on continue, but Indepdenent.ie understands that issue will not delay the transfer from being completed.
Sky are suggesting Pogba will return to from his holiday in America this week to finalise his move to United, after another weekend of rumour and counter rumour over when the transfer will be confirmed.
United captain Wayne Rooney and their new star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic have gone public in talking up the prospect of Pogba returning to Manchester, with the midfielder telling Sky Sports to “wait and see” whether his transfer would be finalised this week.
"I hope he is going to want to return to United and prove he's a top-class player,” said Rooney in an interview with the Daily Mail. “If he is excited to play for us, we'll be excited to have him back.”
Pogba has been teasing fans over his next move on Instagram in recent weeks and has even been photographed signing merchandise for fans in America, with his move to put his signature on a Man Utd No.6 shirt with his name emblazoned on the back attracting big social media interest on Saturday.
Now he has been photographed signing red United footballs, in moves that would not be welcomed by Juventus if they were expecting to hang on to their star midfielder.

Pogba has turned his holiday into a social media event, with the latest leg of his tour seeing him take in a party at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas alongside his soon to be former Juventus team-mate Patrice Evra, yet the fun will soon be over for the player, his agent and their publicity hungry sponsors.
The transfer saga of the summer is finally coming to an end, with the hype soon to be replaced by the confirmation that Pogba is a Manchester United player once again.
