Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets Christmas Day box office record with $49 million

Thanks to the record-smashing success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the Mouse House entered lightspeed at the box office. As the film’s second week in U.S. theaters begins, Disney announced its earnings have surpassed $2 billion domestically.
On Christmas Day, Star Wars raked in another $49.3 million domestically and $27.5 million internationally, yielding a global Christmas Day total of $76.8 million. This now brings the total global earnings for The Force Awakens to $890.3 million ($440.4 million).
And with another day comes another record broken. Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes previously held the record for highest-grossing Christmas Day domestic release with $24.6 million, which was even higher than Avatar’s earnings ($23.1 million). The Force Awakens earned more than twice that amount.

Joy and Daddy’s Home, two other Christmas Day releases, also made impressive debuts, considering ticket sales for the holiday aren’t typically eye-popping. The Will Ferrell-led comedy opened in second place with $15.7 million domestic, while David O. Russell’s latest J-Law team-up scored third with $6.9 million domestic.
These results put Star Wars on track to cross into the $1 billion threshold by the end of the coming week. Rentrak also noted this holiday weekend is poised to become the largest on record for the North American box office.

Fire things: Fire guts Baboko market in Ilorin

NAN

Goods worth millions of naira were destroyed by a fire, which gutted the Baboko Market in Illorin, the Kwara State capital just after midnight on Sunday.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 20 shops were completely razed by the inferno which lasted several hours.
The agency gathered that some shop owners left huge sums of money in their shops when the incident occurred.
Sources said that the inferno was triggered by a spark from an electric cable in one of the shops when electricity was restored.
Some night guards at the market were said to have noticed smoke billowing from one of the affected shops and drew the attention of leadership of the market to it
They alerted fire fighters who came to the scene and prevented the fire from spreading to other shops.
The Chairman of Ilorin West Local Government Council, Alhaji Tajudeen Zulu-Oloje, visited the scene of the incident on Sunday.
He said that he received a distress call from one of the market officials around 2am on the fire outbreak.
He said the local council would do its best to reconstruct the burnt shops and assist affected traders.
Zulu-Oloje commended men of the state fire service for the quick response.
Efforts to speak to the Special Adviser on Emergency and Relief to State Governor Alhaji Duro Mohammed, on the incident proved futile.

I Don’t Like Light-Skinned Women – M I

mi-abaga1
Popular Rapper, M I has revealed that he is not a big fan of light-skinned women because most that claim to be light skinned these days are lying about their natural complexion.
In a recent interview, he said “Talking about the physical side of what I want in a woman, I want my children to be tall, so, she must be tall because I am not tall. Then I don’t care about complexion. If she is fair, that would be a problem because I would have to see her childhood picture to confirm if she’s natural or artificial.
“Most ladies that claim to be fair or appear to be fair these days get unnatural means to achieve it. So, getting her childhood picture would tell me all I need to know concerning her true complexion.
“Yes, if I have a proof that we have been together and done it because I believe that the best way for a child to be raised is for both parents to be around. Look at somebody like 2Face he has shown love to all his kids and they are very close. Not only that, he has also maintained a good relationship with the mothers.
“When such situations arise, the best you can do is to make the most of it by staying true to yourself and be fair to all concerned.”

Why I Visited President Buhari – Father Mbaka

Buhari and Rev Fr Mbaka 1
The Spiritual Director of the Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka has said his recent visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in Aso Rock, Abuja was scriptural.
Recently he paid the president a visit at the Aso Rock Villa and according to Mbaka who spoke to Sunday Sun through his Personal Assistant and Media Chief of the Adoration Ministry, Mr Maximus Ugwuoke, a lawyer, said the attacks on the spiritual director was uncalled for as prophets of old like Mbaka had at one time or the other visited their leaders.
“We read those speculations in the media. Many questioned why Fr Mbaka had to visit President Buhari. Those disparaging remarks were actuated by jealousy and chronic envy among Christians nowadays. Fr Mbaka had faced even more satanic blackmail and devilish character assassination than this.”
“It didn’t start today as he had faced worse criticisms in the past. We tend to forget that the scriptures told us in Psalm 105:15 “Touch not my anointed and do my prophets no harm”
“Is it a crime for a man of God to visit the President? Apart from being a priest and an anointed Prophet of God, is Fr Mbaka not a Nigerian? If yes, has he no right to enter our Aso Rock (the Presidential Villa).”
“For visiting Mr President has Fr Mbaka done what is unscriptural? In Exodus 5, did Mosses a prophet of God not visit Pharaoh in his seat of power in Egypt? Did Samuel not visit Saul in his seat of power in 1st Samuel 15? In 2nd Samuel 12, did Prophet Nathan not visit David in his seat of power? Did we not read about Elisha and Ahab in the scriptures, in 1st Kings 17?
In Acts 10 did Peter the first pope of the Church not visit Cornelius in his house? Did we not read in the Bible that even Jesus himself left heaven and came to man on earth? Is it not the hallmark of a real and humble anointed man of God to do what the biblical prophets did? We wonder why those whose insinuations of what transpired during the meeting between Fr Mbaka and Mr President are poke nosing for. Did Fr Mbaka himself not answer their questions in the interview he granted the media during the visit when he stated that he had come to bless Nigerians and pray for their peace? This was aired on Channels, AIT and published in some newspapers. Those who say Fr Mbaka came to be settled by Mr President or that he came on Biafra agenda are on their own.
Like I said, Fr Mbaka is not new to such accusations but one thing is clear, Fr Mbaka is not a Ghana-must- go-prophet. Even his accusers know this fact and that was why I said earlier that they make those speculations out of sheer envy and chronic jealousy.
Adoration people worldwide know who Fr Mbaka is in matters of morals and chastity and we are happy with him. He is such a man that practically lives a life of fasting and outpouring for the needy.
Nigerians are happy with him. We continue to appeal to him not to leave Mr President to fall into the hands of hawks and vultures. We urge him not to mind the accusers and the critics but to keep praying for Mr President as a product of his prophecy. His detractors are just looking for a way to ensure that President Buhari fails so that they would face Fr Mbaka. We urge him to keep blessing Nigeria and Nigerians.
It will be recalled that Fr Mbaka had predicted before the presidential election early this year that Buhari would defeat former President Goodluck Jonathan which generated a lot of tension, including the threat to his life.

Dutch city plans to pay all citizens a ‘basic income’, and Greens say it could work in the UK

Utrecht takes step towards paying people a salary whether they work or not
Utrecht

It’s an idea whose adherents over the centuries have ranged from socialists to libertarians to far-right mavericks. It was first proposed by Thomas Paine in his 1797 pamphlet, Agrarian Justice, as a system in which at the “age of majority” everyone would receive an equal capital grant, a “basic income” handed over by the state to each and all, no questions asked, to do with what they wanted.
It might be thought that, in these austere times, no idea could be more politically toxic: literally, a policy of the state handing over something for nothing. But in Utrecht, one of the largest cities in the Netherlands, and 19 other Dutch municipalities, a tentative step towards realising the dream of many a marginal and disappointed political theorist is being made.
The politicians, well aware of a possible backlash, are rather shy of admitting it. “We had to delete mention of basic income from all the documents to get the policy signed off by the council,” confided Lisa Westerveld, a Green councillor for the city of Nijmegen, near the Dutch-German border.
“We don’t call it a basic income in Utrecht because people have an idea about it – that it is just free money and people will sit at home and watch TV,” said Heleen de Boer, a Green councillor in that city, which is half an hour south of Amsterdam.
Nevertheless, the municipalities are, in the words of de Boer, taking a “small step” towards a basic income for all by allowing small groups of benefit claimants to be paid £660 a month – and keep any earnings they make from work on top of that. Their monthly pay will not be means-tested. They will instead have the security of that cash every month, and the option to decide whether they want to add to that by finding work. The outcomes will be analysed by eminent economist Loek Groot, a professor at the University of Utrecht.
A start date for the scheme has yet to be settled – and only benefit claimants involved in the pilots will receive the cash – but there is no doubting the radical intent. The motivation behind the experiment in Utrecht, according to Nienke Horst, a senior policy adviser to the municipality’s Liberal Democrat leadership, is for claimants to avoid the “poverty trap” – the fact that if they earn, they will lose benefits, and potentially be worse off.
The idea also hopes to target “revolving door clients” – those who are forced into jobs by the system but repeatedly walk out of them. If given a basic income, the thinking goes, these people might find the time and space to look for long-term employment that suits them.
But the logic of basic income, according to people to the left of Horst, leads only one way – to the cash sum becoming a universal right. It would be unthinkable for those on benefits to be earning and receiving more than their counterparts off benefits. Horst admitted: “Some municipalities are very into the basic income thing.”
Indeed leftwing councillors in Utrecht believe this is an opportunity to prove to a sceptical public that people don’t just shirk and watch television if they are given a leg-up. “I think we need to have trust in people,” said de Boer.
Caroline Lucas, the Green party’s only MP in the House of Commons, agrees. A basic income – the Greens call it a “citizen’s wage” – has long been party policy. It did not make the cut for their manifesto because they couldn’t find a way to fund it.
But developments in the Netherlands, and a parallel pilot in Finland, have bolstered Lucas’s belief that this idea’s time has come. The Royal Society of Arts has been examining the feasibility of the idea, as has campaign group Compass.
To those who say it is an unaffordable pipedream, Westerveld points out the huge costs that come with the increasinglytough benefits regimes being set up by western states, including policies that make people do community service to justify their handouts. “In Nijmegen we get £88m to give to people on welfare,” Westerveld said, “but it costs £15m a year for the civil servants running the bureaucracy of the current system. We will save money with a ‘basic income’.”
Horst adds: “If you receive benefits from the government [in Holland] now you have to do something in return. But most municipalities don’t have the people to manage that. We have 10,000 unemployed people in Utrecht, but if they all have to do something in return for welfare we just don’t have the people to see to that. It costs too much.”
Lucas says she will seek a parliamentary debate on the policy in the new year, and will ask the government to look into the feasibility of a “basic income” pilot here. “I think in Britain people have quite a puritanical idea of work,” she said. “But this is an urgently needed policy. With increased job insecurity, the idea of everyone working nine to five is outdated. People go in and out of work these days.” “People are increasingly working in what they call the gig economy. The current system is not fit for purpose.”
The idea faces a tough political headwind, of course, not least in the Netherlands. Last Tuesday, Johanna von Schaik-Vijfschaft, 41, could be found updating her CV on one of the computers made available to benefits claimants at the Utrecht council building. A cleaner at a local department store, she had been told by council officials to find more work than the 12 hours she currently does.
But she will be under even more pressure in a few years when her 19-year-old son turns 21 and leaves her care. Once she has no dependants, she will lose £150 of her £500 monthly benefit payment and come under the remit of the participation laws, legislation recently brought in by the rightwing central government to make benefits claimants work harder for their cash. Von Schaik-Vijfschaft could be ordered to do some community work for the council in return for her benefits, and will face the threat of losing more of her income if her application rate for jobs falls away. And if Von Schaik-Vijfschaft were to dress inappropriately for interviews or, worse still, miss an appointment, she will lose all her benefits for a month.
The country’s second city, Rotterdam, has even trialled a “work first” system, where aspiring benefits claimants must put on an orange jacket and spend two months clearing rubbish before they are handed any payments.
“Rules, always the rules,” von Schaik-Vijfschaft said. “But of course I want to work. I want to be busy – we all do.” If the experiment can prove that, maybe Tom Paine’s idea will have its day yet.

HOW IT WORKS

■ A “basic income”, first proposed by Thomas Paine is an income unconditionally granted to all on an individual basis, without any means test or requirement to work.
■ It is paid irrespective of any income from other sources.
■ It is paid without requiring the performance of any work or the willingness to accept a job.
■ Advocates say it will allow people to genuinely choose what sort of employment they take, and to retrain when they wish.
■ Its proponents also claim that a basic income scheme is one of the most simple benefits models, and will reduce all the bureaucracy surrounding the welfare state, making it less complex and much cheaper to administer.

Star Wars: Movie takes Chinese social media by storm, flirts with record release

Online chatter won't guarantee box office success in China for the film, which has a red-carpet premiere in Shanghai on Sunday and goes on general release in the mainland on Jan. 9.

After a mammoth marketing campaign, growing online chatter in China around "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" suggests the latest installment of the hit franchise has a shot at breaking box office records in the world's second-largest movie market.
China is crucial if Walt Disney Co's first foray into the world of Jedi knights is to earn a spot among the top-grossing films of all time. The movie, the seventh in a near 40-year-old franchise, surged past "Jurassic World" to set a global opening weekend record of $529 million.
Disney has had to work hard for its "Star Wars" buzz in China. Though the franchise launched in 1977 - a year after the end of the Cultural Revolution and the death of China's founding leader Mao Zedong - the original films weren't shown in movie theatres until this June.
But after promotions featuring everything from 500 model stormtroopers on the Great Wall to a pop star dubbed China's answer to Justin Bieber, a Reuters analysis of posts on popular microblog Sina Weibo shows "Star Wars" has been mentioned around 700,000 times since the start of December, outpacing other big hit Hollywood releases in China this year.
"I roughly know the story plot but I have never seen any of the films in the series before," admitted Yao Yiyun, 22, a computer programming student in Shanghai. "When it comes out at the cinemas I want to see it though, especially because I like science fiction."
Online chatter won't guarantee box office success in China for the film, which has a red-carpet premiere in Shanghai on Sunday and goes on general release in the mainland on Jan. 9.
But curiosity among the world's biggest online community could help the film rival smash hits like action movie "Furious 7", the latest in a series long popular with Chinese viewers that took over $180 million in its opening weekend in China.

Veteran Actor, Harrison Ford score big as Star Wars: The Force Awakens' hit over $300 Million at the box office on Tuesday, December 23, 2015.
According to Dailymail, the actor is said to have received a whooping sum of $20 million for his role as 'Han Solo' in the movie.
Ford who played the same role in 1977, has been acting for over six decades and has starred in blockbusters like Airforce One, Indiana Jones Trilogy, Expendables 3 and other movies.

The actor is the highest paid actor for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Dailymail also noted that Co-stars, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were paid in the low seven-figure range, though of course the former can surely boost his coffers by a much higher amount if he has a bigger role in future entries.
Disney are said to have decided to create a 'legacy pay scale' for the original trilogy stars, while newcomers would get much less on a general pay scale.

In this effect, Nigerian-British actor- John Boyega and Daisy Ridley  received between $100,000 -$300,000 for their roles while more established names Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac got paid in the mid-to-high-six figures range.

For John Boyega whose parents are Nigerian, this is the biggest movie he has starred in yet. The young actor played 'Ugwu' in the Chiamanda Adichie's 'Half of a Yellow Sun'.
Meanwhile, the Hollywood Reporter said the film shattered the previous record for best Monday earning that had previously been set earlier this year by Jurassic World thanks to an impressive $40.1 million in earnings.
It also reached $300 million by mid-Tuesday, and could even break the record take for that day set by the actual opening of The Amazing Spider-Man, which pulled in $35 million in 2012.
Among the records it has already broken include the mark for an opening weekend, reaching $248 million in the US and $529 million worldwide.
Surely, Christmas came early for multiple award winning Harrison Ford who is still going strong in the movie industry.

NNPC to reduce PMS to N85 per litre in January 2016

Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu told reporters that the PMS will reduce to N85 per litre in January 2016.

Dr Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, Minister of State for Petroleum  and the Managing Director of the Nigerian  National Petroluem Corporation (NNPC) spent his Christmas in the Port Harcourt Refinery Company (PHRC) inspecting the plant, where he told reporters that the PMS will reduce to N85 per litre in January 2016.

He said that he had approved the new price temperate of the petroleum product pricing Regulation Agency (PPPRA) on Thursday 24 Dec 2015, “Like I said, we have done a modulation calculation and it is showing us below N87. I imagine that if PPPRA publishes it today, it will become effective immediately, but the 1 of January is when we are looking at
He explained that the price modulation is to help ensure the fluctuation of prices to reflect the realities of the crude oil market. Modulating the oil prices will mean that if the price for crude oil goes up, you go up and if it comes down, you come down.

There will be no more subsidy following the fraud that has resulted from its operation.
He further explains that the refineries are aging so one fault comes up after the other but the government has plans to repair the plant holistically early next year, so there will be efficient operations of the plants soon.

Month of fire: In Ibadan, Fire brings down 200 shops

The Alaro market area of sango was reportedly brought down by an inferno which started at about 3pm and as at 8pm was still on.

While most people were having a jolly merry Christmas, it was a black Christmas for some of the traders in the popular Sango market, Ibadan, as fire destroyed up to 200 shops in the plank section of the market.
The Alaro market area of sango was reportedly brought down by an inferno which started at about 3pm and as at 8pm was still on.
According to reports, item worth N250M was lost in the fire incidence.

Although nobody could give an account to what exactly stated the fire, the Oyo State Fire Service vehicles were seen to have rushed to the Eleyele water works for refill.
Mr Afolabi, a witness said he would rate the fire service men low, “Each time the vehicle left to refill water, we lost more shops because the fire would gain more ground. Don’t forget this is the time of the year when fire incidents are rampant because we are in the dry season. More fire service vehicles are needed to forestall possible overnight fire here. As you can see, we now pay to bring water tanker to help the fire service men.

He explained that several sawing machines and other logging equipment were lost to the fire and he called on the state government to come to the aid of the traders that have lost their shops in the fire..
Most recently, about 100 persons were been reported dead in Anambra State after being burnt in a gas plant explosion.

Nigeria: Nnewi Fire Disaster - Relatives Search Bushes for Bodies of Victims

Vanguard News:

Relatives of victims of Nnewi gas explosion, yesterday, combed bushes near the gas plant for corpses of missing family members, even as the Anambra Fire Service has eventually succeeded in putting out the fire.
Some of them told Vanguard that they decided to search the bush because they got information that many people ran into it during the explosion.
A middle aged woman, Amaka said she is still in shock after the incident. According to her, "I cannot just believe that my maid who was sent to refill gas at the factory is gone for ever.
"I am in deep trouble, what will I tell the family of the girl, I just brought her from the village last three months with the promise that I would help sponsor her education, I have gone to the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital(NAUTH) Nnewi mortuary where the corpses are deposited but my maid is not there. Will I just go and tell the parents that their daughter is dead without the corpse," she queried.
Also, a staff of Chikason Group, who spoke on condition of anonymity said workers of the organisation recently concluded a two-week fasting and prayer session after a prophet allegedly warned the Chairman of the group of the impending doom.
He however stated that the prophet did not specify which of the factories in the group would be affected, a situation that made many members of staff to participate in the prayer sessions.
"I don't know why all these bad things are happening. Our Chairman is a very good man who is passionate about the welfare of the downtrodden even at great personal cost. Last time two of his fully-loaded trucks just disappeared. The vehicles were carrying items running into millions of naira. That one is yet to be resolved and now this fire disaster," he said
The Chikason staff however, did not mention the name of the prophet .
Meanwhile, the traditional ruler of Nnewi, Igwe Kenneth Orizu in company of his council of titled Chiefs visited the scene of the fire incident yesterday. Spokesman for the royal father and former Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party PDP Anambra state, Chief Dan Ulasi told newsmen that Nnewi has never experienced such a level of devastation in its entire history.
He pointed out that the Igwe and his cabinet had also visited the injured in different hospitals in Nnewi.
The monarch expressed shock that an industrial town like Nnewi does not have a functional Fire Service Station, urging the government to address the anomaly.
A member of House of Representatives for Nnewi North, Nnewi South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituency Hon Chris Azubogu who also visited the scene of the explosion noted that the accident has cast a big shadow on Christmas celebrations in the town.
Hon.Azubogu prayed for the repose of the souls of the victims, as well as, prayed for the quick recovery of those in the hospitals.
The lawmaker said that the accident has made it incumbent on the government to enforce safety standards, stressing the need for regulatory bodies like Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) and similar agencies to ensure that environmental impact assessments are properly carried out before giving licenses to people to set up filling stations.

Reasons 'Die Hard' is a perfect Christmas movie

A very important recent poll found a shocking 62 percent of voters do not think Die Hard qualifies as a Christmas movie. Of course the 1988 film is not only a Christmas movie but also a perfect one, stuffed with more Xmas per frame than anything airing on Hallmark Channel this week — plus lots and lots of fighting, blood, guns and ammo, thus making it perhaps the most American of Christmas movies ever. You don’t have to look very deeply for this, and indeed the whole Die Hard-as-holiday-entertainment idea has certain been blogged upon many times before. I suspect we like to put movies into single mental genre boxes and as Die Hard is also considered one of the best action films ever made, roughly 62 percent of us cannot also accept that it’s fully functional holiday fare too. The pine-green core of the film matches the structure of holiday classics, and the gunfire and explosions are merely twinkling lights and ornaments. Let’s take the aspects one by one…
1. Die Hard is about an estranged family where Dad is trying to make it home for the holidays on Christmas Eve. That set-up is a standard holiday movie formula. The fact that it’s terrorists stalling John McClane instead of a blizzard in Chicago (Planes, Trains and Automobiles), or his time-sucking corporate job (Jingle All the Way), is just Die Hard’s way of making its protagonist’s obstacles more interesting.
2. There’s a greedy, Grinch-y villain: Another classic holiday trope: The heartless schemer that threatens to spoil the holiday for all the good people of Whoville or Bedford Falls or wherever. You already know the villian’s name is Hans Gruber. You perhaps didn’t know the man who composed “Silent Night” was named Franz Gruber.
3. The dialogue is full of ironic Christmas references: Die Hard hammers this heavily, between Theo’s “Twas the night before Christmas..” riff to Hans’ “It’s Christmas, Theo, it’s the time of miracles…,” and many others. The best is probably Hans dryly reading McClane’s famous taunt: “Now I have a machine gun, ho-ho-ho…” a line that perfectly capture the genre mashup.
4. There’s an anti-consumer-capitalist message (sort of): Die Hard takes on the familiar consumerism vs. family values trope, though with a bit of twist as the supposedly greedy Nakatomi corporation is one of the uber-Grinch’s victims. Still, it’s suggested that the company has somehow corrupted the family unit and McClane eventually releases Holly from her boss’ fancy Rolex shackle to reclaim his wife (Does this also smack of “women belong at home” sexism? Definitely, but that’s an entirely different essay).
5.Wait, McClane’s wife’s name is freakin’ Holly. I never got that one before! Surprised their kids aren’t named Mistletoe and Poinsettia.
6. McClane learns the spirit of Christmas: You clearly have sacrifice for the community and family. You also want presents being opened? McClane’s gun is wrapped with Xmas tape on his back before giving a bullet to Hans. You want some religion? McClane is victorious after praying for help — plus he simply shouts “Jesus Christ!” repeatedly throughout the film.
7. It “snows” at the end. The classic question: Will there be a white Christmas? It’s L.A., but sure.
8. There’s a “stuck in a chimney” scene. Okay, so this one is a stretch, but once you think about Die Hard in the Christmas context, it’s tough to shake that McClane is coming down the elevator shaft while trying to save Christmas (plus crawls through that air shaft).
9. The soundtrack is stuffed with Christmas music. Again, all have twists. Run-DMC’s “Christmas in Hollis” (“This IS Christmas music!…”). “Let It Snow!” referencing the shredded bearer bonds. The best-utilitzed track is “Ode to Joy,” which Gruber even hums in the elevator at one point, a classic that perhaps has never been used more perfectly than in this greed-gasmic scene:

That’s right! Merry Christmas, to every one of us!

Lol. I gave my friend only one blow – Murder suspect

Fatai Sabitu, a 19-year-old vulcaniser who was alleged to have killed his friend, Yusuf Sheu, says he punched him only once.
Sabitu, who hails from Abeokuta, Ogun State, explained that after the 38-year-old slumped, he rushed him to two different hospitals before he died.
PUNCH Metro had reported that Sabitu and Sheu, who both lived on Raji Fashola Road, in the Imude-Shibiri area of Ojo, Otto Awori Local Council Development Area, had fought over a stolen phone.
Our correspondent reported that Sheu, a Kwara State indigene, bought a phone from the suspect, which was later discovered to have been stolen.
After the real owner took back his phone, the deceased was said to have demanded a refund of his money, which led to a fight.
The deceased was said to have slumped during the fight and was confirmed dead in a hospital.
The matter was reported at the Ilemba Hausa Police Division, and the suspect was arrested.
It was learnt that while Sheu’s remains were deposited in a mortuary, the matter was transferred to the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.
The suspect was said to have confessed to police detectives that he killed the victim, adding that he acted in self-defence.
Sabitu, a primary school dropout, told our correspondent that he was a victim of bad companionship.
He claimed that Sheu was the one who stole the phone, adding that after the owner found it and collected it back, the deceased attacked him.
He said the deceased believed that he was the one who exposed him.
He said, “We have known each other for about three years now. I am a vulcaniser, and he worked in a hotel. We lived within the same community. He used to drink a lot and he introduced me to a lot of bad things, like the tattoo in my arm.
“He had stolen a woman’s phone and I saw him when he took it, but I didn’t say anything. He went and used the phone to borrow money from one of his friends in the area.
“The owner of the phone, who had been looking for it, later saw it in the man’s hand and picked a fight. The man then explained how he came about the phone.
“The owner of the phone took it back, and Sheu was ordered to return the money he borrowed from the man.
“He was angry and thought I was the one that exposed him. He came to meet me where I was and started punching me; I had to fight back. I only gave him a punch before he slumped to the ground.”
Sabitu said he took Sheu to a private hospital, where he was rejected.
He added that the victim was finally admitted in another hospital, while he left to narrate the incident to his (Sheu) family and bring them to the hospital.
The suspect said when they returned to the hospital, they could not find him and the hospital management told them some people had taken him away.
“After searching several hospitals in vain, I decided to return home. I saw his dead body in front of our house and some people started beating me. They drove the police away and were about lynching me when the Baale (community leader) came and drove them away. He took me to the police station.
“My life is ruined because I made him my friend. It was just a blow that I gave him,” he added.
PUNCH Metro learnt from a police source that the autopsy result was being awaited on the matter.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Joe Offor, when contacted promised to call back our correspondent, but he had yet to do so.

Christmas fire destroys buildings, property in Edo

Tragedy struck on Friday when an inferno razed four buildings on First East Circular road in Benin, the Edo State capital.
It was gathered that the fire started at about 12pm, when many Christians were still attending the Christmas service in their respective places of worship.
Two residential buildings, a furniture showroom and workshop were affected in the fire.
Although the cause of the disaster had yet to be ascertained by the appropriate authorities, at the time of filing the report, some eyewitnesses suggested that the fire might have been triggered by the storage of petrol in one of the rooms or the use of heavy firecrackers.
“I suspect that somebody stored fuel or chemical. Otherwise, the fire would not have had such an impact,” one of them who identified himself as Mr. Ifeanyi, said.
Sympathisers who thronged the scene of the incident to assist in putting off the fire described the disaster as a tragedy for the victims who had planned to celebrate the festive period with their families.
Some of them also noted that the situation might have been worsened by the harmattan season.
Although no live was lost in the fire, property ‎worth millions of naira was destroyed prior to the arrival of officers of the state fire service‎.
One of the victims, Mr. Vincent, while lamenting his loss, said, “As I talk to you, no single thing, not even a plank was spared. The things burnt are not less than N3m. I am so surprised; I don’t really know the cause of the fire.”
The fire comes a day after an explosion at a gas plant in Nnewi, Anambra State killed 100 people. The Christmas Eve explosion resulted in a fire, which razed several buildings, 60 cars and 50 motorcycles, leaving more than 20 other people with injuries.

U.N. Security Council approves peace plan for Syria

  • U.N. Security Council approves resolution calling for free elections in Syria within 18 months
  • Friday's meeting of the International Syria Support Group seeks to put in place a peace plan reached by ministers last month
(CNN)The United Nations Security Council on Friday approved a resolution that supports international efforts to seek a political solution in Syria.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the process is designed to end the nation's civil war and provide a new government in Syria.
Russia and the United States both approved the resolution, even though it doesn't address the major issue separating those two nations: What will happen to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad? Russia supports Assad but the United States wants him removed.
Still, the accord was hailed as a major step toward bringing peace to Syria, where a civil war has killed thousands and sent millions of refugees fleeing into other nations.
"It's going to be uphill," said U.N. Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura. "It will be complicated. But it will be possible."
"This council is sending a clear message to all concerned," Kerry said. "The time is now to stop the killing in Syria and to lay the groundwork for a government the people of that battered land can support."
Besides recognizing the 17-nation International Syrian Support Group's efforts in the peace process, the resolution provides a rough timeline for political change in Syria.
It calls for "credible, inclusive and nonsectarian governance" within six months and "free and fair elections, pursuant to the new constitution," within 18 months.
The resolution, which passed 15-0, seeks a ceasefire in Syria. Kerry said that ceasefire would not include ISIS.
Kerry said some Security Council nations disagree on Assad's future but that nations involved in writing the resolution didn't want that issue to stop the peace process. Ending the war and bringing political stability to Syria go hand in hand, he said.
"If the war is to end, it is imperative that the Syrian people agree on an alternative in terms of their governance," he said.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned against the "demonization" of Assad, which he said happened to leaders like Moammar Gadhafi in Libya, who ended up being killed. That would not help the peace process, he said.
The resolution has a schedule for changing the political situation in Syria.
"We hope this process will not be protracted ad infinitum," Lavrov said.
Senior State Department officials told CNN that Kerry and Lavrov led negotiations Friday to fine-tune the text of the U.N. resolution.
Friday's meeting of the International Syria Support Group, or ISSG, the third in six weeks, sought to put in place a peace plan reached by ministers last month in Vienna under the umbrella of the United Nations.
The resolution does three things, which internationalize efforts to seek a political solution in Syria. It endorses the 17-member ISSG as the main body dealing with the Syria peace process; validates the peace plan agreed to by the ISSG in Vienna last month, including a ceasefire between the regime and opposition in six months and talks leading to drafting a new constitution; and gives the United Nations a leading role in working with the regime and opposition on negotiating a ceasefire and drafting a constitution, which officials said is aimed at putting an international stamp on the peace process.
Diplomats close to the talks said Friday that there is heated discussion among the nations in the meeting about the list of groups that will be considered terrorist groups and unable to take part in talks.
But they said it was unlikely to affect passage of a U.N. resolution giving international endorsement of the peace process.
"The consensus is that they won't reach consensus on the terrorist list today," one of the diplomats said.

Spurred on by the deadly attacks in Paris, the 17 nations overcame their differences on how to end the civil war in Syria and agreed to the road map for a political transition now being worked on.
The United States and Russia have long split on the best path forward in Syria. The United States supports groups warring with Assad, a close Kremlin ally. Moscow, meanwhile, has been bolstering Assad with airstrikes ostensibly aimed at ISIS but more often, according to the Pentagon, targeting other opposition fighters, including ones supported by Washington.
Not only have Russian military strikes had a minimal effect on ISIS, being mostly focused elsewhere, they have also exacerbated an already dire humanitarian crisis.
But an increasingly bloodied Russia -- now a target of ISIS -- and growing U.S. urgency in resolving the 5-year-old conflict whose chaos only strengthens the terror group, seems to provide some common ground for finding a resolution to the conflict.
After holding marathon meetings in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Lavrov, Kerry said the United States and Russia hoped to enshrine the agreed-upon road map for an end to the civil war in a U.N. Security Council resolution.
The United States hopes a ceaseire between the regime and Syrian rebels would allow Russia, along with the U.S.-led coalition of Arab and Western allies, to focus on fighting the jihadists.
"You can't defeat Daesh without also de-escalating the fight in Syria," Kerry said in Moscow, using another name for ISIS.
State Department Spokesman John Kirby said Friday's meeting seeks to "better define" what a political transition in Syria would look like and how a ceasefire could be implemented and monitored.
Still undecided is which rebel groups should be part of the negotiations between the regime and the opposition, expected to start in early January.
Friday's talks follow a meeting last week in Saudi Arabia in which Syrian opposition groups agreed to unite to negotiate with the regime on a ceasefire. The Kremlin has rejected the results of the meeting in Riyadh, saying it considered some of the rebels present terrorists.
The question of whether Assad could take part in the political transition continues to be a main sticking point. For the past four years, the United States has sided with Gulf States in calling for Assad's ouster.
But this week in Moscow, Kerry raised eyebrows when he said "the United States and our partners are not seeking so-called 'regime change,' as it is known in Syria."
Some viewed Kerry's statement as an effort to placate his Russian hosts. Kerry did add that the United States still did not believe Assad "has the ability to be able to lead the future Syria," and soon after his remarks, the State Department said the U.S. policy that Assad should go remained unchanged.
Russia is now agreeing to the drafting of a new constitution and new elections, a position that has evolved over the last few months.
But Fred Hof, a former top U.S. diplomat handling Syria now at the Atlantic Council, warned that regardless of Assad's fate, until Russia and Iran are willing to press him to stop bombing the Syrian people, there is little hope the political process will yield any results and that the bloodshed will end.
"Stopping the mass murder is a good place to start," he said. "How the hell do you sit down for a peace process featuring compromise when one of the parties doesn't accept the rules of the game and the other party's constituency is being blown away on a daily basis?"
He continued, "The first symptom of Assad being under control would be an end to the collective punishment and mass homicide and only then would the Syrian people truly have a chance to decide their fate."

Louis van Gaal walks out of briefing and insists Manchester United job is safe

Van Gaal says he has received assurances over future as United manager
Dutchman walks out of press conference after four minutes 58 seconds
Van Gaal walks out of press conference.
Louis van Gaal has received assurances about his future at Manchester United, including calls from the executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward, and the former manager Sir Alex Ferguson, and insists he will keep his job at Old Trafford.
Van Gaal said he had also been given the backing of the former chief executive David Gill and asked whether the journalists at his press conference wanted to apologise. He then walked out in a fit of pique. It lasted four minutes and 58 seconds, comprising only three questions, before he made for the exit, saying he was there only because it was part of the Premier League’s regulations.
His performance was reminiscent of some of Ferguson’s regular walk-outs but the key line before leaving his seat was that Woodward had told him there were no plans to sack him on the back of the dismal run in which the team has been eliminated from the Champions League and managed only seven shots on target in their past four home matches.
United’s manager was clearly aggrieved about the level of speculation since the 2-1 home defeat by Norwich City last weekend, when he admitted that he “cannot close my eyes” to the prospect of losing his job. His team have fallen to fifth in the Premier League, with growing criticism about their style of play, but Van Gaal has been assured that José Mourinho has not been offered the job, in keeping with what the former Chelsea manager’s agent, Jorge Mendes, said on Tuesday.
Van Gaal had previously admitted being “worried” he was vulnerable but the Dutchman seemed emboldened by what he had heard from the people directly above him and grateful for Arsène Wenger’s comments about the speculation being “disrespectful” for a manager with the Dutchman’s background.
“Has anybody in this room not a feeling to apologise to me?” Van Gaal asked. “That’s what I’m wondering. I think I was already sacked, I read. I have been sacked. My colleague [Mourinho] was here already. What do you think happens with my wife or my kids [when they read that]? Or with my grandchildren? Or with the fans of Manchester United? Or my friends? What do you think? They have called me a lot of times and also Arsène Wenger is saying something about that. So, you think that I want to talk with the media now? I am here only because of the Premier League rules that I have to talk with you. But I can see when I say something that you use my words in your context. And I only want to say that I have tried to lift the confidence of my players. I have done everything this week.
“I held meetings with the players and with my members of staff. I held a Christmas lunch. I did a speech and I felt the warmth and support of everybody in Carrington, our training complex. But I didn’t feel that in the media and, of course, I can imagine you can write about that subject. We are not in a good position but four weeks ago we were first in the Premier League and in four weeks’ time we can be back in that position again.”
For that to happen would need a dramatic shift in form, with United nine points adrift of Leicester City at the top. United have not won any of their past six games, meaning Van Gaal’s win ratio, 50.7%, is lower than David Moyes’s figure of 52.95%. There have also been clear indications that many supporters have lost faith in Van Gaal but the former Holland manager had clearly been encouraged by what he has heard from the club’s England-based directors. His team play at Stoke City on Saturday, followed by Chelsea’s visit to Old Trafford two days later, and Van Gaal insisted they were still in the title race.
“I don’t think that you can do that [speculate about my position] because you have to stick by the facts and when I get calls off Alex Ferguson and David Gill and Ed Woodward [it is] because you are creating something that is not good, which is not the facts,” Van Gaal said, before rising to his feet. “Now I have to answer questions; I don’t think I want to do it. I say that I am focused on Stoke City. I help my players. I wish you a Merry Christmas and also maybe a Happy New Year when I see you. Enjoy the wine and a mince pie.”
