Mourinho has verbal assurance he will take over at United but now wants the club to put the offer in writing.
The reports say there is a split at board level over the appointment of the former Chelsea manager.

The Glazer family and supremo Ed Woodward are determined for Mourinho to get the job though, as they recognise he is the man to bring back the glory days at Old Trafford.
Since being axed by Chelsea in December the 53-year-old has been constantly linked with replacing Van Gaal who has been under pressure at United.
The Dutchman suffered a group stage exit in the Champions League, is struggling to finish in the top four in the Premier League and was dumped our of the Europa League by arch-rivals Liverpool.
