“Arik Air, West and Central Africa’s largest airline, is pleased to announce that scheduled flights will resume from 11 am tomorrow, Wednesday September 14, 2016,” the airline said in a statement signed by Ola Adebanji, its public relations officer.
“Members of the public and our esteemed customers are advised to discountenance the disparaging allegations, unsubstantiated and uninformed claims about the airline’s inability to meet its financial obligations to aviation fuel marketers and a purported withdrawal of insurance services to Arik Air by its insurers.
“While the current scarcity of aviation fuel (JET A1) has impacted on the operations of airlines in the country, Arik Air is in good standing with its fuel suppliers and has been meeting its obligations to them and to our insurers.
“With the regularization of the required documents relating to the renewal of the insurance, Arik Air will be resuming its normal flying schedule from 1100 hours on Wednesday, September 14, 2016.
“Arik Air regrets the unfortunate inconvenience caused to its customers and reassures our customers of expedient rebooking of any affected flights. ”
Arik becomes the first airline to have returned from a suspension of activities, as Aero Contractors and FirstNation are yet to make their comeback.

Former First Lady Patience Jonathan claims $15m Frozen in her bank accounts are for medical bills, personal expenses

Former first lady, Patience Jonathan, has written a letter to the EFCC explaining how $15 million entered her account. In a letter with reference number GA/Abibo/00226/2016, written by her lawyers, Granville Abibo (SAN) and Co, and addressed to the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, the former first lady said the $15 million which has been seized by the antigraft agency, was for her medical bills and other personal expenses, according to Sahara Reporters...

"It is noteworthy to emphasise that the said accounts, which were in US dollar denomination, were card-based accounts and our client is the sole signatory to these accounts. However, our client has been operating the said accounts using the cards for her medical bill payments and purchases for her private purposes without any let or hindrance. Our client was therefore surprised when the said cards stop functioning on July 7, 2016, or thereabout. Our client immediately, thereupon, contacted Skye Bank Plc through our solicitors. It was only then that the bank officials informed our client that the said accounts were placed on a ‘No Debit Order’ following investigations and instruction from your commission and this is without notice to our client by either the bank or the commission. It is in the light of the foregoing that we urge you to use your good offices to vacate the ‘No Debit/Freezing Order’ placed on the said accounts.”
Patience in the letter stated that the operatives of the antigraft agency have refused to acknowledge her explanation
“Despite the foregoing, our client, who is a law-abiding citizen, has watched with surprise how efforts are being made surreptitiously to indirectly harass or harangue her and short-change her of her personal funds in breach of her fundamental human rights. We urge you sir, to kindly intervene to stop the untoward and wrongful actions of your officials to embarrass, inconvenience and short-change our client.”the letter said
Patience Jonathan during her husband's time in office had seven surgeries within a month for an undisclosed ailment in Germany. During a thanksgiving service in February 2013, she revealed that she lost consciousness for ‎a week during one of her surgeries.

Bill Gates Foundation to boost rice production in Nigeria

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Tuesday said it was funding six agricultural commodities value chains with emphasis on rice and yam production to ensure food sufficient in Nigeria.
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest private foundation in the world, founded by Bill Gates.
Dr Audu Grema, the Senior Programme Officer, Agriculture in the West African Office of the Foundation, said in Abuja on Tuesday.
He listed some agricultural projects of the foundation to include CARI-Project (rice) which was aimed at improving rice production productivity, pest control, and variety enhancement.
Grema expressed optimism that Nigeria would soon be self sufficient in rice production.
He said the rice project by the foundation was currently being implemented in Cross River, Niger, Kebbi, Jigawa, Kano, Plateau and Edo, Ebonyi States.
The programme officer, however, said that the Cassava Value Addition Project was based in Abeokuta at the University of Agriculture.
According to him, we also have a big yam project where we are working with private farms around Abuja, Kaduna, Niger, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Akure to enhance yam propagation technology through seeds.
He said, “We have a huge portfolio of agricultural investments in Nigeria. We are work on maize, rice, yam, cassava and crop-livestock interface.
“We have four strategic cassava investments that we think are critical that we are funding across Nigeria.
“In agriculture, we do not approve projects except if it has a small holder connection.
“Anything we fund must have a connection with enhancing the status of small scale farmers.”
He explained that the foundation was also working in public health, integrated vaccine delivery, routine immunisation revival across many states.
On the reports that Gates was a major propagator of Genetically Modified Organisms, the programme officer refuted the assertion, saying that the Bill Gates had no connection with GMOs.
According to him, Bill Gates has no interest to promote agribusiness, so we are denying that we did not bring GMOs into Nigeria.
“Bill and Melinda Gates are not farmers; they are not into agricultural services; so, to think they will promote GMOs just to promote their businesses interest is very wrong.
“I will be in complete denial that we have nothing to do with these big commercial agricultural farms that have been cited in some of the articles in Nigeria.
“The foundation does not have anything to do with GMOs even in Nigeria and abroad.
“No connection with the big industrial agricultural concerns which people are alluding to.
“People making such assertions are morally wrong,’’ he said.
Grema commended the `Green Alternative’ currently launched by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
He said the agricultural initiative was a step toward fighting poverty and food security in Nigeria.
The programme officer assured that the foundation would align its programmes with that of the Federal Government to enable the country achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
The foundation with headquarter based in Seattle, Washington has its primary aim of enhancing healthcare and reduce extreme poverty.

Okada rider stabs cyclist, spills his intestine

There was pandemonium at Oke Fia area of Osogbo, Osun State, on Tuesday when a commercial motorcyclist stabbed a young cyclist, Remi Gbadamosi, following a head-on collision between the two of them.
As at the time of filing this report, doctors at Emmanuel Medical Centre were still battling to save the life of the cyclist whose intestine was spilled following the knife attack on him.
Our correspondent gathered from eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident that Gbadamosi was riding against the traffic when the collision happened.
But some claimed that it was the commercial motorcyclist who rode against the traffic.
Following the collision, the duo were said to have engaged in a brawl but one of the eyewitnesses, Fatima Jamiu, said the Okada rider reached out for a dagger from his jacket and stabbed Gbadamosi in the stomach.
The motorcyclist, on seeing the harm he had done, was said to have attempted to flee the scene but eyewitnesses grabbed him and with the help of some policemen nearby, he was taken to a police station.
Jamiu said, “The Okada man and the cyclist started fighting after a head-on collision. They had fought for about two minutes before the Okada man brought out a sharp knife from his jacket and stabbed the cyclist.
“Everybody ran when we saw his intestines coming out. Some courageous men grabbed the Okada man, while others called Osun Ambulance, which came to take him away to the hospital.”
One of the doctors at Emmanuel Medical Centre, Tunde Afolabi, said that the patient had been stabilised.
And though there was panic among the victim’s family members, who thronged the hospital, the doctor assured them that Gbadamosi was responding to treatment.
The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Femi Oyeleye, when contacted on the telephone said the suspect had been arrested and that he would be charged to court at the completion of the investigation.
The CP said the suspect was already in Police custody and that investigations would be done quickly in order to enable them arraign the suspect without delay.

About 4000 civil servants employed during the Goodluck administration may lose their jobs

No fewer than 4000 civil servants who were employed into the civil service during the Goodluck Jonathan administration may lose their jobs as the acting Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission, Shettima Abba, has reportedly queried the chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission FCSC, Joan Ayo, for alleged violation of the principle of Federal character in the employment of the civil servants.
According to inside sources, the query was issued in early May year. This has led most civil servants to petition the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission ICPC over the alleged plans by the FCSC to sack them. The Executive chairman of the Federal Character Commission had argued that most of the workers recruited were from a particular geopolitical zone, the South South. The query issued to the FCSC chairman in part reads
"The Federal Character Commission has viewed and observed with concern the recruitment exercises undertaken by the Federal Civil Service between 2013 and 2015, which glaringly is lopsided and grossly abused the principle of Federal Character to which all institution have subscribed. The recruitment which recorded the engagement of about 4,904 workers, threw away all common sense and wisdom of national cohesion and integration by favoring some states to the detriment of others. We are worried that if this trend is allowed to continue, then some sections of the country may not only feel alienated but may feel insecure by the action of people in authority. It is inconceivable and a gross injustice for a geopolitical zone to be allocated 33.6 per cent of the total candidates recruited as against 26.2 per cent for three zones combined, North-East, North-West and North-Central.”

Shettima Abba in the query, asked the commission to henceforth adhere to the principle of federal character as contained in the guidelines and procedure for recruitment into the civil service.

Fresh violence at Trump rally as supporter allegedly punches protester

A Donald Trump campaign rally was marred by violence yet again on Monday as the Republican nominee attacked Hillary Clinton for calling his supporters deplorable.
A Trump supporter apparently punched a protester at a rally held at the US Cellular Center in Asheville, North Carolina. The scuffle was the first violent incident at a Trump rally in months. Although throughout the primary season, Trump campaign events had been marked by violence by both Trump supporters and protesters, culminating in near riots in Chicago and San Jose, California, they had been comparatively peaceful in recent months. Prior to being punched, the protester reportedly directed an obscene gesture in Trump’s direction.
The incident happened as Trump attempted to attack Clinton for her statement that half of his supporters belong in “a basket of deplorables”. Although the former secretary of state has since backed down from the comment, she has continued to insist her opponent has “built his campaign largely on prejudice and paranoia and given a national platform to hateful views and voices”.
Trump has tried to paint this as an attack by Clinton on blue-collar Americans. “Hillary Clinton spoke with hatred in her heart for these working-class Americans,” he said in Asheville on Monday night, in an effort to reinforce his attacks on his opponent as an insider member of the Beltway elite. The Republican nominee went on to repeat of Clinton: “She talks about people like they are objects, not human beings.”
The attacks come as Clinton has been forced off the campaign trail for health reasons. The Democratic nominee was forced to cancel a campaign trip to California after being filmed losing her footing while abruptly leaving a ceremony to commemorate the terrorist attacks of September 11 on Sunday. Eventually, after initially claiming that she was “overheated”, the Clinton campaign admitted that the candidate had been diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday.
In a phone interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday night, Clinton said she was feeling better and insisted that she did not faint on Sunday. The Democratic nominee said “we know the least about Donald Trump than any candidate in recent American history” and that he should be held to “the same standard” as any other candidate.
She noted the only medical information released by Trump was a letter addressed “to whom my concern” that proclaimed, if elected, Trump would be “the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency”. Clinton said “that’s not even serious” and went on to hammer Trump for refusing to release his tax returns.
Trump, who has long made jibes about Clinton’s “stamina”, did not address his rival’s illness on Monday night. Earlier in the day he had said he hoped she got better soon but added that her illness was “an issue
Instead, he continued his offensive against his opponent by claiming that she was running a pessimistic campaign of scare tactics. “Our vision of hope stands in stark contrast to my opponent’s campaign of hate,” Trump said. “Hillary Clinton has been running a hate-filled and negative campaign, with no policy, no solutions and no ideas. By contrast, I’ve been going around the country offering very detailed plans for reform and change.”
The Republican nominee’s statement was curious considering that his campaign has long focused on concerns about immigration and crime. He announced his campaign by saying Mexico was deliberately sending rapists to United States, accepted the Republican nomination by saying Americans were living in a “more dangerous environment than I have ever seen or anyone has ever seen”, and has repeatedly suggested that if Clinton is elected, we will “no longer have a country”. Trump amplified this rhetoric on Monday by telling the crowd: “You can go to Afghanistan, you can go to war-torn countries and you will find that it is safer than some of our inner cities.”
Further, on most issues, Trump has been relatively light on policy. According to an Associated Press report in late August, the Republican nominee has only posted seven policy proposals totaling 9,000 words on his website. In contrast, Clinton had released 112,735 words of proposals in 65 different issue fact sheets at the time.
The rally took place in North Carolina, a state won by Mitt Romney in 2012 where Clinton and Trump are neck and neck in polls. The increasingly diverse Tarheel State is considered Clinton’s best opportunity to turn a red state blue. In contrast, Trump is hoping to play the offensive in blue-collar industrial states in the midwest.

Oshiomhole, APC Plan To Replace NYSC Members With Loyalists – PDP

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has again alerted the international community, accredited election monitors and the general public about secret plot by Governor Adams Oshiomhole and its party, the All Progressive Congress (APC) to substitute members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) trained for Edo governorship election with their party members.
A press statement signed by the state’s publicity secretary of the PDP, Chris Nehikare,  reiterated that the postponement of the Edo State governorship election earlier scheduled for Saturday, September 10, is in line with the governor’s and APC’s devious plan and had nothing to do with insecurity in the state.
According to the PDP,  “the postponement was well-planned to undermine the will of Edo people. We are now convinced that the phantom security advice by the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Security (DSS) was orchestrated by Governor Adams Oshiomhole and some cabal within the APC, in the face of imminent defeat in the election.
‘’For instance, we all know that many members of the NYSC were trained by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as ad-hoc staff for the election. And going by NYSC Action Plan September, 2016, the trained NYSC members are to finish their clearance, as part of their final disengagement process that will end on September 30.
“’And we have just been told by insiders within the APC that Governor Oshiomhole and his party had compiled list of their party’s members that they will secretly use to replace the out-going trained NYSC members.’’
The party added that one of the reasons APC also asked INEC to fix the rescheduled election for Wednesday, September 28, an official working day, is to deny many electorates outside the state, who planned to come to Edo State for the election, from doing so.
It said hundreds of the electorates outside the state had arrived Edo State before the election was postponed, with many of them feeling disappointed about the action of the APC, in connivance with INEC/security agencies.
The PDP added, ‘’We want to once again, put the international community, accredited election monitors and the general public on notice over the devious plan by APC. It will surely undermine our democracy and instigate crisis that might be very difficult to manage if Oshiomhole and his gang are allowed to have their way.

Manchester United announce record profits

Man United become first UK club to earn over half a billion pounds in a year

Manchester United have announced total revenue of £515.3 million ($683.5m) for the year ending June 30, 2016.
United have taken a record profit of £68m and in the process have become the first UK club to earn over half a billion pounds in a single year. However, that figure is short of the £570m in annual revenue that Barcelona announced in July.
United are also on target for record revenues again over the next year, despite failing to qualify for the Champions League, having been helped by the huge rise in broadcasting income for this season.
Following the news, executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward set his sights on returning United to "the pinnacle of our sport."
Speaking in his conference call on Monday, he said: "Jose Mourinho's appointment is a reflection of our determination to return to the pinnacle of our sport. We are writing the next chapter in our history."
Looking ahead, Woodward highlighted the effect world record signing Paul Pogba has already had, saying that the impact on Facebook was "more than Bale and Neymar combined."
Their £515m figure for 2015-16 was short of Barcelona's, revealed in July, as the Spanish club announced earnings of £570m, having benefited from a stronger Euro against the pound post-Brexit.
United, who agreed a 10-year £750m ($1.28 billion) contract with adidas -- the biggest deal in sports-licensing history -- in 2014, have a net debt that is £260.9m, but commercial revenue has soared to £268.3m, which is an increase of 36.3 percent over the prior year.
The accounts showed that sacking Louis van Gaal and his coaching staff cost £8.4m in compensation.
United's wage bill was up to £232.2m, with there being a rise in player salaries due to Champions League participation.
They also had to write off £6.7m as an asset because Bastian Schweinsteiger is "no longer considered to be a member of the first-team squad."
In a season when they won the FA Cup, United also saw matchday and TV revenue rise and signed 14 sponsorship deals.
Woodward had previously been reported as saying: "Our record Fiscal 2016 financial performance reflects the continued underlying strength of the business and the club is on target to achieve record revenues in 2017, even without a contribution from the Champions League."
"This strong financial performance has enabled us to invest in our squad, team management and facilities to position us to challenge for, and win, trophies in the coming years."

South Africa’s Zuma pays $542,000 bill over house scandal

South African President Jacob Zuma has paid back $542,000 of public money spent refurbishing his private home, his office said Monday, in a controversy that has dominated his second term in office.
The country’s highest court found earlier this year that Zuma had violated the constitution by defying an order to repay some of the funds used to renovate Nkandla, his traditional homestead.
It ordered him to pay back funds spent on non-security upgrades — including a chicken coop, swimming pool and amphitheatre — valued by the treasury at 7,814,155 million rand ($542,000).
“President Zuma has paid over the amount… to the South African Reserve Bank as ordered by the Constitutional Court of South Africa,” the presidency said in a statement.
It added that the president raised the money through a home loan.
The treasury confirmed separately that the payment had been received.
The Nkandla scandal has dogged Zuma’s presidency, becoming a symbol of alleged corruption and greed within the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party and triggering several unsuccessful impeachment bids by the opposition.
A 2014 report by the public ombudswoman, Thuli Madonsela, found that Zuma and his family had “unduly benefited” from the upgrade work — valued in 2014 at 216 million rand (then $24 million) — and ordered him to pay back some of the money.
The president reacted by ordering two government investigations that cleared his name, including a report by the police minister which concluded that the swimming pool was a fire-fighting precaution.
In March, the Constitutional Court ruled Zuma had “failed to uphold, defend and respect the constitution as the supreme law of the land”.
The ANC suffered historic losses in South Africa’s local elections last month, garnering less than 54 percent of ballots cast — an eight-point drop from the last local poll in 2011 and its worst showing since the fall of white-minority rule in 1994.

Pneumonia Bug That Struck Hillary Clinton also Seriously Sickened Several Members of Her Staff

The illness that sickened Hillary Clinton with pneumonia and caused her to have to be escorted away from September 11 ceremonies in New York on Sunday also struck down several members of her campaign team at Clinton headquarters in Brooklyn, PEOPLE has learned.

"Everyone's been sick," a campaign source tells PEOPLE.

At the end of August, two weeks before Clinton was diagnosed with pneumonia, a debilitating bug was making the rounds among staff at her headquarters and campaign aides who travel with Clinton, a source tells PEOPLE.

At least half a dozen senior staff were felled, including campaign manager Robby Mook. Two top advisers even needed emergency medical treatment, the source says. One top adviser diagnosed at a Brooklyn urgent-care center with a respiratory infection was being treated with antibiotics in the days before Clinton's diagnosis. Another top adviser was taken by ambulance to the ER by ambulance after collapsing from what turned out to be severe dehydration, the source said.
Clinton has canceled plans to visit California on Monday and Tuesday so that she can rest and recover at her home in Chappaqua, New York, according to her campaign.

The Clinton campaign initially blamed the 68-year-old Democratic nominee's health issue at the 9/11 memorial on being overheated. Hours later, her doctor released a statement revealing that she was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday.

Video taken at the event showed Clinton stumble as she is helped into an SUV by staffers near the World Trade Center on Sunday.
Later in the day, Clinton emerged from daughter Chelsea's apartment and was seen smiling and waving to the crowd.

A source who was with the candidate on Sunday tells PEOPLE, "She is fine now. She had been standing for a while in the heat. After she cooled off at Chelsea's, she made a point to take a walk outside Chelsea's apartment building to prove she was OK."

Presidential campaigns are always grueling – interminable work days, hours spent on and off of planes, the stress of the high stakes – for the candidate and staff and traveling press corps alike.

That's why one veteran of the campaign trail, Nicolle Wallace, former communications adviser to President George W. Bush, says Sunday's belated disclosure of her pneumonia diagnosis – at a time when polls show that Clinton's trustworthiness is seriously questioned by a substantial chunk of voters – is more a political issue than a real medical one.

This shows, Wallace said on NBC's Today, that "the Clintons can't come clean about anything, including cold and flu season."

Female Suicide Bomber Gunned Down At Checkpoint

A female suicide bomber was shot by soldiers on Sunday evening while attempting to cause havoc at a military checkpoint around Kara Cattle Market via Antul and Mukdala in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.
This was disclosed in a press statement signed by Colonel Sani K Usman, Acting Director, Army Public Relations.
According to the statement, as the suicide bomber was approaching the checkpoint, she was ordered to stop from afar by troops on sentry duty.    She, however, refused to stop, claiming to be on her way from Monguno to see her parents in Dikwa.
Her conduct further aroused the suspicion of the soldiers, with one of them firing a shot at her. The suspicion was confirmed as she was found to be carrying a person-borne Improvised Explosive Device (PBIED), which exploded, killing her instantly and causing minor injuries to two soldiers and a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force assisting the soldiers.
The injured soldiers and the civilian, according to the statement, have been treated and are back at work.
Colonel Usman explained that the incident indicated that the few remnants of Boko Haram are determined to create panic and insecurity in some areas.
He also disclosed that the Army is in possession of information showing that  Boko Haram terrorists now disguise or pretend to be mad men or women in order to gain access to some locations, especially in Maiduguri.
"Consequently, all should be very wary of any seemingly mentally unstable or mad men or women found wandering and report same.
"Therefore, it is imperative for all to be more security conscious and vigilant, especially during the Eid festivities and public holidays," Usman warned.
