Team Nigeria Wins 7th Gold in Paralympics

Flora Ugwunwa set a new world record in the women's javelin - F54 event on Tuesday at the Rio Paralympics to give Nigeria its seventh gold medal.
She recorded a throw of 20.25 metres after six attempts to win the gold medal and take Nigeria's tally to seven gold, two silver and one bronze medals.
On a day when Nigeria's medals search was looking to be futile after some failure in the favourite hunting ground of power-lifting, the athletics event provided succour.

South Africa's Ntombizanele Situ completed the African sweep of the event's medals by winning the bronze medal with a heave of 17.90m.

Kenya Warns About Dominance of Ethiopian Products

Ethiopia's items are controlling the market industry, jeopardising Kenyas' capability to attract foreign investors.
As a result of weak industrialisation policy in Kenya, the Kenya Planning Commission have warned that Ethiopia's products could flood Kenya's market, causing difficulties for the country in attracting foreign investors.
"The growing trend of Ethiopia's manufacturing sector, with the tendency of high production costs in Kenya, will hinder the country to benefit from the strategic agreement made between the two nations," said Saitoti Torome," planning principal secretary of Kenya.
The manufacturing sector's contribution to the GDP is declining, even if there was an increase in value terms to 4.2 billion dollars in 2014/15 - from 4.1 billion dollars in 2013/2014.
Both countries are collaborating to build a one-stop border post at Moyale to facilitate the movement of goods and people. Ethiopia have completed 47pc of the 500km road construction to link Addis Abeba to Moyale. This will be finalised in September 2018. On Kenya's side, the construction of the Isiolo-Moyale road is currently 95pc completed.

Botswana gearing to join SA to ban homophobic American pastor

The SA minister of home affairs Malusi Gigaba yesterday in Parliament announced that the pastor has been denied entry on the basis of hate speech.
In what was described as victory for the LGBT community, Gigaba said Anderson was denied entry in terms of the Immigration Act having made repeated undesirable remarks about everything. He explained that Anderson and his people are undesirable people who should not be allowed to continue with their hate speech.
“Pastor Anderson is prohibited from entering the country. Him and his crew are barred from practising hate speech, racial hatred and social violence here”. Gigaba further said Anderson was not just a homophobe but he was also a holocaust denialist who was anti human, and hates all humanity especially Africans and women.
The controversial Anderson of the Faithful Word Baptist Church was expected to make a trip to SA and later here. Anderson, who has made numerous anti-gay remarks and also infamous for having pulpit meltdowns, is expected to launch his ministry together with evangelist Garret Kirchway on September 25.
Here the Lesbian, Gays and Bisexuals of Botswana (LEGABIBO) have also moved swiftly to block the pastor’s entry into the country with fear that he is bringing tainted messages. The community intends to meet the minister of Labour and Home Affairs Edwin Batshu on Thursday to petition Anderson’s entry into the country.
LEGABIBO representative, Bradley Fortuin told Mmegi that the petition would be delivered as a way of fighting to block Anderson
and his people. He said they have been at work engaging with relevant authorities to map a way forward. “The petition will be delivered, but I hope our country will take leaf from our neighbour and do the honourable thing not to allow him entry into the country,” he said.
LEGABIBO felt the pastor has no respect for humanity and his messages go against the country’s democratic ideals and that he should not be allowed to come into the country to spread hatred, homophobia, violence and sexism.
The SA gay community has also pledged their support to LEGABIBO in their quest to block Anderson’s entry.
Batshu, has however, downplayed the issue saying he had heard about the pastor but did not divulge what they intended to do with his entry into the country
He said he has so far not engaged with the LEGABIBO and that he was not even aware about the petition to block the pastor.
“I have not met them and they have not made any appointment with me. But if they come I will engage with them,” he said.
Meanwhile after being banned from entering SA yesterday, Anderson immediately released a statement saying he still has a wide open door in Botswana.
Part of his statement reads; “I feel sorry for people who live in South Africa, but thank God we still have a wide open door in Botswana. Stand by for reports of MULTITUDES saved in Botswana, where religious freedom still exists”.

In Uganda, Legislators Burial to Cost Shs68 Million Each

Death always comes at a cost not just in terms of the emotions it evokes but in actual money spent. While the end is the same, the cost of the funeral will always vary depending on one's status in society. The higher the status, the more the money that will be spent on the funeral.
A lot of the costs fall on the shoulders of the bereaved, relatives and friends. For those in gainful employment, the employers will usually subsidise the funeral expenses
It is in that light that Parliament plans to spend Shs67.7m on burial expenses for each MP who dies.
Last week, Parliament invited bids to identify service providers who are interested in offering funeral services to the national assembly.
The budget
Perusal of the Parliament budget shows that Parliament has budgeted for an estimated five deaths this year, making a total of Shs338,680,000 planned expenses on burial of MPs.
Parliament's public relations manager Helen Kaweesa said yesterday that the national assembly footing burial costs of MPs is not new, but it is only that this time round, it will be provided for in the official budget. She said Parliament has been meeting costs of its dead personnel.
"The Parliamentary Commission caters for funeral expenses of its staff and members of Parliament. We have to pre-qualify service providers because it is government money and we have been doing it all along," she said.
Every three years, as per procurement law, Parliament is supposed to pre-qualify service providers to create a pool from which the national assembly can pick companies to offer services. It's the reason the advert inviting service providers was published.
Daily Monitor learnt that currently, Parliament has only one service provider, Uganda Funeral Services, and wants to add "at least two more in the pool."
"Parliament does not pay for services pronto. Last year, we lost three MPs in one week and the single service provider we have was over-stretched. Businesses in Uganda don't have a lot of money; so if you ask a service provider to cater for three funerals [in succession], yet you will pay them after three months, it becomes hard on them. We need to ease service delivery," said a Parliament official who declined to be named because he is not the spokesperson.
Speaking to Daily Monitor yesterday, Ms Regina Mukiibi, the managing director of Uganda Funeral Services, declined to divulge details of the package they usually offer to Parliament for funeral expenses.
She, however, said costs for the funeral services "depend on what someone wants to be included."
The breakdown
A breakdown of expenditure of the Shs67.7m for a dead MP includes buying a state-of-the-art casket rated as American Casket at Shs6m, Shs5.5m for the grave, Shs4.5m for Order of Service books, Shs15m on feeding mourners and Shs17.5m on allowances for police.
Ms Kaweesa said although staff of Parliament also benefit from the funeral services, it is not the same as for the MPs.
Ayivu county MP Bernard Atiku said Parliament is right to meet burial costs of MPs because every institution plans for any eventualities.
Gomba District Woman MP Sylvia Nayebare supports the proposal. She says Parliament should be able to bury its members if not for anything but a show of togetherness.
"It is right. Like any other institution, it shows harmony and togetherness. It is right only if it is not overshot. I don't think we would lose over five or more from 427 MPs," she said.
The public, however, is not agitated about the move.
"As MPs representing constituencies, they are employed by an institution. Like any employees, burial expense is a perk. However, this needs to be reasonable. With an overburdened taxpayer, such costs should be symbolic and in kind. The amounts being mooted are not only out of touch with reality but are obscene. This can create a negative backlash. Government and Parliament need not be out of sync with an overburdened populace," public relations expert Jimmy Kiberu said.
Public speaks out
Journalist and social media commentator Grace Natabalo says Parliament footing burial costs for MPs is "an unnecessary burden on the tax payers given the number of MPs in the House."
"They can afford to cater for it (individually). MPs should be able to contribute to their own funerals through insurance and then Parliament can provide extra support such as transporting the body. The MPs seem to be enjoying too many perks and there has to be a limit. We cannot cater to their every need," she said.
What they say
Helen Kaweesa, Parliament public relations manager.
"The Parliamentary Commission caters for funeral expenses of its staff and members of Parliament. We have to pre-qualify service providers because it is government money and we have been doing it all along."

Ugandan Students Strike Over Mini-Skirt Ban

More than 1,300 students of Aduku Secondary School, Apac District, have been sent home following a violent strike which resulted into the destruction of school property worth about Shs100 million.
School authorities said the last Saturday night strike was sparked off by a ban on wearing of mini-skirts and tight trousers.
Last week, the school administration confiscated all mini-skirts and tight trousers, a move which reportedly annoyed the students. Aduku SS is an Anglican-founded mixed O and A-level boarding school.
Before the strike, the students had also claimed that they were not comfortable with having porridge for breakfast early in the morning at 6am, the time when they should still be enjoying their sleep.
The headmaster, Mr Patrick Okwir Angulo, said last term, they issued a circular to all parents warning that mini-skirts and tight trousers would not be allowed in school. This was after it was realised that girls cut their long skirts and saw them into mini-skirts. Boys were also reducing the sise of their normal trousers making them tight.
"During the opening of this term, teachers were deployed at the school gate to check the kind of uniforms students had come with," Mr Okwir told Daily Monitor in a telephone interview on Sunday evening.
Mini-skirts and tight trousers were confiscated and cut into pieces. But those that could be resized were kept in the school store and will be given back to the owners at the end of the term.
The headmaster said that was a way of instilling discipline in the students and added that the wearing of non uniforms at school has been banned.
The culprits
But a group of about 10 students from Senior Three allegedly mobilised and spearheaded the strike last Saturday. They reportedly pulled down a wall fence measuring 307 metres, which they say limited their movement outside the school.
"They also tried to push down the wall fence from the girls' wing, but the girls never came out to join them in the strike," Mr Okwir said.
He said the students broke into the computer laboratory and destroyed all the computers by pouring sewerage on them. The protesters also broke all the window panes.
The district police commander, Mr Alfonse Ojangole, and the district education officer, Mr Billy Okunyu, visited the school on Sunday and talked to the students before they were all sent home for 10 days.
This newspaper understands that there will be a joint Parents Teachers' Association (PTA) and Board of Governor meeting on Wednesday to agree on a way forward.

Europa League not the competition Manchester United want - Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has admitted that the Europa League is "not the big dream for every big player" but they have to find motivation and Manchester United want to win the competition.
United manager Mourinho is preparing his team for the opening Europa League game of the season on Thursday, away against Feyenoord, and is disappointed that the stadium will be at reduced capacity due to crowd trouble.
Speaking at his news conference on Wednesday, Mourinho said: "This is not a competition that Man United wants. It's not the big dream of every big player, but we are not in the Champions League.
"We come to win the game. We want to win the competition. It's difficult to do, but it's simple to feel it and to say. This is the way we want to approach the competition.
"For a club of our dimension, to do well is not to be out in the group phase. Tomorrow is an important match for us."
The United manager warned against complacency, giving a reminder of what happened to Louis van Gaal's side last season in the Europa League. They lost a first-leg tie away against minnows FC Midtjylland, which was a low point in the Dutchman's reign, and do not want a repeat.
Mourinho said: "If you see what happened last season, against Midtjylland, you don't forget that as a fan. Maybe as a player but not the fans. We have to make sure we are not sleeping."
Discussing the situation with the stadium, he added: "There is not player or manager who wants to play in an empty stadium. We are lucky it is not closed, just half of it, but half is not the same as full. Every player wants a great atmosphere.
"I remember clearly what happened against Roma [when some Feyenoord fans caused trouble, leading to the Dutch club being punished]. I don't think this is Feyenoord. Feyenoord is much bigger than a few hundred that created that situation.
"But, in the end, the clubs are punished by these actions. The players are going to be punished, I am punished, [Feyenoord manager Giovanni] van Bronckhorst will be punished."
Meanwhile, midfielder Ander Herrera has said that he will "never give up" in his new deeper role. The Spaniard was brought into that position as a substitute against Manchester City on Saturday and it helped United to improve in the second half although they lost 2-1.
Herrera said: "I can make mistakes because I am human but what I am not going to do is give up. Never. I try to share my energy with the team, to win the ball back as quick as possible.
"I will keep doing the same the the manager wants me to play. I am a team player and I am ready. I will do what the manager asks me."
When asked about Mourinho's message after the derby, Herrera said: "All I can say is that he has shown us his confidence. He believes in us.
"They were better than us in the first half, we have to accept that, no excuses. But next time we face a team like Man City, who like to play from their keeper, we will do it better. You have to learn from every situation."

Monaco beat Tottenham in Group E opener at Wembley Stadium

Monaco shone in London, beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 in their Champions League Group E opener at Wembley Stadium on Wednesday.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring for Monaco in the 15th minute. After picking up an Erik Lamela giveaway near midfield, Silva cut into the centre of the penalty area and fired past Hugo Lloris to make it 1-0 in favour of the visitors.
Monaco doubled their lead in the 31st minute, when Thomas Lemar blasted a left-footed shot into the roof of the Tottenham net following a scramble in front of the goalmouth.
Spurs found a much-needed opener just before the stroke of half-time as Toby Alderweireld rose to meet a Lamela corner and headed home at the near post to make it 2-1 at the break.
Harry Kane had a chance to level in the 79th minute, but his shot from the center of the penalty area went right at Monaco’s Danijel Subasic.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side continued to frantically push for the leveller in game’s dying minutes, but Monaco’s defence and Subasic were resolute in closing out the match.
Tottenham face CSKA Moscow next on Wednesday, Sept. 27, while Monaco host Bayer Leverkusen on the same day.

Riyad Mahrez bags brace for Leicester City in win over Club Brugge

Rampant Leicester marked their Champions League debut in stunning style as they thrashed Club Brugge 3-0.
Boss Claudio Ranieri had warned against expecting another fairytale but it was dream night in Belgium after Leicester scored twice inside the first half an hour.
Marc Albrighton netted the Foxes’ first-ever Champions League goal, and first in Europe since 2000, before Riyad Mahrez crashed in a brilliant free-kick.
Mahrez made it 3-0 with a second-half penalty with Leicester, who dominated at the Jan Breydel Stadium, top of Group G after Porto and Copenhagen drew 1-1.
Burnley will give the Foxes a sterner test than abject Brugge when they return to the Premier League on Saturday and Leicester must learn to cope with the demands of the league and European football.
But it was the perfect performance from the Foxes, 50-1 to win the competition after last season’s shock Premier League victory, although things could have been so different if the hosts had taken a glorious opportunity after two minutes.
Abdoulay Diaby skipped through Danny Drinkwater’s lunge and slipped in Jose Izquierdo but the forward’s finish was woeful and he was made to pay three minutes later when Albrighton wrote his name into the Foxes’ history books.
It was scrappy stuff and a gift as Brugge got into an almighty mess but sent the travelling 1,400 Leicester fans into raptures.
Luis Hernandez launched a long throw into the box from the right and Ludovic Butelle came to punch but the ball brushed off Hans Vanaken’s head and fell for the onrushing Albrighton to fire in from six yards.
Leicester instantly relaxed with Brugge unnerved at home and looking lost as they struggled to find any fluency. They played into the Foxes’ hands as Mahrez slowly began to exploit the extra space and Jamie Vardy remained an irritant.

Izquierdo blazed well over to underline how weak the hosts were going forward and it then got even better for the Foxes after 29 minutes.
Again, Brugge made a hash of it at the back and captain Timmy Simons was booked for chopping down Vardy on the edge of the box after he lost the ball.
It gave Mahrez the chance and it was one he did not pass up as the winger whipped a delicious 20-yard effort across Butelle into the top corner.
Stunned, Brugge had no response and Leicester went in search of a third as Mahrez curled wide and Drinkwater twice tested Butelle, the second a dipping 30-yard volley.
The lively Vardy almost made it three before the break when Butelle spilled his angled drive as the Belgians continued to be accommodating and generous hosts.
There was little to suggest they would change after the break as record buy Islam Slimani, making his debut, began to threaten, although he was booked for a needless push on Bjorn Engels which saw the defender substituted with a serious looking shoulder injury.
And more defensive calamity from Brugge gifted Leicester a third when Mahrez completed his double with a penalty after 61 minutes.
Vardy hassled Stefano Denswil into losing the ball and the England striker raced through only to be taken out by Butelle and Mahrez gleefully converted from the spot – despite missing three of his previous four penalties.
Diaby clipped the post as powderpuff Brugge tried to find a way back but Leicester even had the luxury of giving Vardy, Mahrez and Slimani a rest as Ahmed Musa, Leonardo Ulloa and Demarai Gray replaced them.
And Gray almost put the gloss on a brilliant team performance when he fired over after a darting run with six minutes left.

Rio Ferdinand predicts the 2016-17 Premier League top four

The retired centre-back was asked a range of different questions during his six-minute video, including which four teams will finish inside the Premier League’s top four come May. According to him:
1. Manchester United
2. Manchester City

South Africa Bans U.S. Pastor Over Anti-Gay Views

U.S. pastor Steven Anderson has been banned from visiting South Africa over his anti-gays views, which the country’s home affairs minister yesterday equated with hate speech.
Anderson, of the Faithful Word Baptist Church in Arizona, notoriously welcomed the gunning down in June of 50 people at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida by saying “there’s 50 less pedophiles in this world”.
South African gay and lesbian groups collected more than 60,000 signatures opposing his visit this weekend, when he was expected to preach and seek converts to his church.
Citing anti-discrimination laws designed to “prevent and prohibit hate speech”, Home Affairs minister Malusi Gigaba told a media briefing he was banning Anderson indefinitely.

Wayne Rooney, Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of squad to face Feyenoord

Wayne Rooney has been left out of Manchester United's 20-man squad for the Europa League match at Feyenoord on Thursday.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jesse Lingard, who struggled in Saturday's derby defeat to Manchester City at Old Trafford, will also not travel to Holland.
The squad was announced on United's official website.
Mkhitaryan was selected for the derby despite suffering a thigh injury on international duty with Armenia and United manager Jose Mourinho is expected to address that issue in his news conference on Wednesday.
He was not at an open training session with the rest of the squad in Manchester earlier in the day.
United's regular starting full-backs, Antonio Valencia and Luke Shaw, have also both been left at home too -- paving the way for the likes of Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo and Tim Fosu-Mensah to stake a claim.

ASUU denies plans to embark on strike on October 2nd

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has denied media reports saying it was planning to embark on a one-week warning strike. The News Agency of Nigeria NAN yesterday quoted the Chairman of the University of Abuja chapter of ASUU, Ben Ugheoke, as saying the union will on October 2nd embark on a one week warning strike to press home their demands fro the full implementation of the 2009 agreements they had with the Federal government.

In an interview with Premiumtimes today, Ugheoke denied making such an announcement in an interview he granted a NAN reporter.

“A certain reporter in NAN is responsible for this damage. As a result of this falsified report, I am facing a panel later tonight from ASUU National body. I have reached out to the NAN reporter and he told me it was a mix-up. He also begged me to save his job. We have never given a date for any form of strike, whether warning strike or full blown strike. There was nothing like a date fixed for a strike” he said.
Ugheoke says he hopes the agency will release a rebuttal to the false report soon. ASUU on August 31st, threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the non-implementation of its 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.
