Ethiopians face five years in jail for posting on Facebook

Ethiopians who post statuses on Facebook about the country’s growing political unrest could face up to five years in jail, as part of a series of measures under a “state of emergency” that grow more stringent by the day.
The government has imposed the longest blanket ban on mobile internet services in the capital Addis Ababa since protests began a year ago, and access to messaging platforms like WhatsApp has been heavily restricted.
The measures are designed to stifle people’s ability to organise protests, amid calls for greater political freedoms and recognition from the ethnic Oromo and Amharic groups.
Access to foreign-based media has also been restricted, including Deutsche Welle and Voice of America, which both have popular Amharic stations. Two TV stations run from the US for the Ethiopian diaspora, ESAT and the Oromia Media Network, have been banned.
And the new rules even seek to ban people from carrying out certain gestures “without permission”. They include crossing arms above the head to form an “X”, a political symbol that has become synonymous with the Oromo struggle and featured at the Rio Olympics and Paralympics.
UK rights charities are particularly concerns that under the emergency rules, which are expected to be in place for the next six months, foreign diplomats will have their movements heavily restricted.
The government says diplomats are not allowed to travel more than 40km (25 miles) from the capital, Addis Ababa, without permission, and say it is for their own safety.
But the rights group Reprieve told The Independent there are serious concerns this could limit the access Britons have to consular services. They raised the case of one UK citizen, father-of-three Andy Tsege, who is on Ethiopia’s death row and held at a jail some way outside the capital.
Ethiopia is a key strategic ally for the US and European countries in the fight against Somalia’s Islamist insurgency, al-Shabaab, and Addis Ababa is the home of the African Union.
The global importance of the country’s stability has meant Western governments turning a blind eye to its authoritarian leadership. In June, the ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front cut off nationwide access to social media – on the grounds of preventing exam result leaks.
The new ban on internet services has already made a noticeable impact on the flow of reports of unrest coming out of the country via on-the-ground activists.
Ethiopian state media reported that 1,000 protesters had been arrested in the central Oromia town of Sebeta since the state of emergency was declared on 8 October, and ahead of an investment conference in the town which began on Monday.
FBC said those detained were suspected of damaging property, but there was little in the way of opposition reports to give the other side of the story.
The emergency rules include a ban on using social media to contact “outside forces”, and Ethiopians risk jail if they communicate with any “anti-peace groups designated as terrorist”.
Finally, the rules stipulate a curfew of 6pm to 6am in which members of the public may not visit factories, farms and government institutions, which have come under attack in recent weeks.
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has urged the Ethiopian government to ensure “the protection of fundamental human rights” during the state of emergency, and the president has announced some electoral reforms in order to try and reach out to protesters.
A Western diplomat told the AFP news agency those changes had not yet materialised, however. “This is a state of emergency and we expect repressive measures,” the diplomat said.
“But we also expect an opening of the political space for the opposition as stated by the president in front of the parliament. This is not what seems to be happening.”

Wolfsburg sack coach Dieter Hecking after poor start to Bundesliga season

The decision brings an end to Hecking’s four-year reign at the club. Wolfsburg’s U23 coach Valerien Ismael has been put in temporary charge.
Hecking took over in 2012 and his most successful season was 2014-15 when he won the German Cup and guided Wolfsburg to second place in the Bungesliga. They finished eighth last season.
The fans had high hopes for the season, particularly after some high-profile signings including Germany international striker Mario Gomez, but after victory in the first game of the campaign they are yet to win since, losing three of their last four.
They are currently 14th in the table after losing 1-0 to Leipzig on Sunday.
The club’s sporting director Klaus Allofs said: “After the last few disappointing results we took the decision to give the team new impulses through a change of coaching staff.
“On a personal level I feel sorry for this decision. In these intense almost four years we worked very successfully together.”
Hecking said: “Obviously I am disappointed but that is part of this business, to expect such separations when there is no success. Unfortunately that was the case recently.”

Leave my family alone, Fani-Kayode tells EFCC

A former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, has asked the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Federal Government to leave his family alone and face him.
Fani-Kayode said this in reaction to the detention of his wife, Precious, at a bank in Ado Ekiti for hours on the instruction of the EFCC.
Fani-Kayode, who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, condemned the move in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents.
He said, “This government is sick and cowardly and so is the EFCC. If you have a problem with me, face me and leave my family alone.
“My wife travelled to Ado Ekiti to see my friend and brother, Governor Fayose, and his family. They were on their way out of town when they went to Access Bank in Ado Ekiti to get some money.
“They were illegally detained, brutalised and put under arrest on the orders of the EFCC at a bank in Ado Ekiti today.
“She has never had any business with me; she has never been formally invited by the EFCC or asked any questions about her transactions and neither has it written to her on any issue even though it is always sending letters to my house and sending people there.
“If Buhari wants to deal with me, why doesn’t he face me like a man instead of trying to harm and hurt my eight-month-old son and wife.
“Had it not been for the intervention of Governor Ayo Fayose, they would have taken them away and subjected them to all manner of harm and indignity simply because she is married to me.
“This is Buhari’s Nigeria and we will resist his wickedness and tyranny.”
Fani-Kayode said he intended to sue the bank and the EFCC for this “illegal and wicked action.”
He added, “They have no right to do this. If they want to see my wife, all they need to do is to invite her. We have nothing to fear. They do not need to be so primitive and barbaric to people.
“In an attempt to starve and harass me and my family, all my accounts and wife’s accounts have been frozen.
“Now, they are resorting to arresting people’s wives and children for no just cause.”
Mrs. Fani-Kayode, who was a guest of Governor Ayodele Fayose, had gone to a branch of Access Bank in Ado Ekiti around 3pm for a transaction, but was detained by officials of the bank.
The bank officials told her she was being held on the instructions of the EFCC.
The EFCC, however, denied detaining her.
In a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on Monday night, the anti-graft agency said the ex-minister’s wife attempted to withdraw money from an account which the agency had frozen.
The statement read in part, “Contrary to the spin about the purported arrest of mother and child, a certain Chikwendu Sonia today attempted to withdraw money from an Access Bank account that had been placed on ‘Post No Debit’ Category, following the discovery of illicit cash flows into the account.
“She was intercepted by the bank while the commission was notified, but because it was late, the EFCC advised that the suspect be taken to the police station for processing and release on bail.
“They were arranging to take the suspect to the police station when Governor Ayo Fayose stormed the bank with thugs and his personal security and forcefully secured the release of the suspect, with claims that the EFCC had no power to detain anybody in his state. He also vowed to close down the branch of the bank.
“The said account, which had a balance of N2,307,712.82, was flagged following investigation into the PDP Joint Trust Fund when the commission traced N1.1bn to the Zenith Bank account of Fani-Kayode.
“It was discovered that the account had two biometric identification numbers, one for Fani-Kayode and the other (with BVN 2205597283) for Sonia Chikwendu. The same BVN is linked to two other accounts in Diamond Bank and 15 accounts in Guaranty Trust Bank.”

Drama as Fayose forces EFCC to release Fani-Kayode’s wife

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday detained Mrs. Precious Fani-Kayode, who is the wife of a former Minister of Aviation, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, in Ado Ekiti for hours.
Precious, who was a guest of Governor Ayodele Fayose, had gone to a branch of Access Bank in Ado Ekiti around 3pm when she was detained by officials of the bank.
Sensing that she was not being promptly attended to, she inquired from officials what the problem was and was told she was being detained on the instructions of the EFCC.
Precious, who had her eight-month-old baby with her at the time, was prevented from leaving the banking hall thereafter.
It took the intervention of Fayose, who led scores of supporters to the bank around 7pm to secure her release.
Speaking with our correspondent after the incident, Mrs. Fani-Kayode lamented that she was badly treated by the officials while her baby was denied food.
She stated, “I’m not a politician and that account had been dormant for about five years. I only activated it last month in Port Harcourt.
“I decided to go to Access Bank to make some withdrawals when I was detained on the instructions of the EFCC.
“They told me the account had been frozen and they were asked by the EFCC to arrest me on the spot.
“I have been operating the account since 2005 when I was a student in the university. They had earlier frozen my two bank accounts which they have not opened till today and I have been waiting for them to invite me, but up till today, they have not.
“The balance in the account is just N200,000; so, I don’t know what their interest is. I’m a private person. I have not received any political fund; so, why are they trying to starve my family?
“That account has nothing to do with politics. This is dehumanising. I had to call the governor to inform him of the development.”
Condemning the action of the EFCC and the attitude of the bank officials, Fayose warned the anti-graft agency against becoming lawless and reckless against Nigerians.
He asked the commission to prepare for a stiff resistance if it did not stop “persecuting” him and his friends.
Fayose added, “They can’t try that nonsense in my state. If they try it, there will be a showdown. They are over-stepping their boundary. This is a country that operates a constitution. What kind of molestation is this, taking away the rights of Nigerians because you are investigating?
“Must they terrorise people because they are in opposition? I have demanded an apology from the bank. If it fails to do that, I’m done with them. This is lawlessness.”
In a telephone interview with our correspondent, Femi Fani-Kayode, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, urged the government to leave his family members alone and face him.
Fani-Kayode stated, “This government is sick and cowardly and so is the EFCC. If you have a problem with me, face me and leave my family alone.

“In an attempt to starve and harass me and my family, all my accounts and wife’s accounts have been frozen.
“Now, they are resorting to arresting people’s wives and children for no just cause.”
In its reaction, the EFCC denied detaining Fani-Kayode’s wife and the son.
In a statement by the commission’s spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, on Monday night, the anti-graft agency said the ex-minister’s wife attempted to withdraw money from an account which the agency had frozen.

Naira sustains recovery at forex market

The Naira on Monday sustained its recovery trajectory in all the major segments of the forex market, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The Naira gained five points to exchange at N455 to the dollar at the parallel market, from N460 it traded on Friday, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N545 and N490 respectively.
Trading at the Bureau De Change window saw the Naira exchanged at N380 to the dollar, while the Pound Sterling and the Euro exchanged at N558 and N507 respectively.
The Nigerian currency firmed against the dollar at the official interbank market as it closed at N305 to the dollar, from N307 recorded on Friday.
Abubakar Adamu, a currency trader, said that the impact of the sale of forex to BDCs by Travelex had forced the Naira to sustain its recovery trajectory.
Adamu noted that currency hoarders were also selling the forex at their disposal and that was easing the liquidity challenges at the market.
NAN recalls that Alhaja Aminu Gwadabe, the President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria on Friday, advised currency hoarders and speculators against continued hoarding of forex.
Gwadabe said that the resumption in the sale of forex to BDCs and the transparency in the sale would lead to drastic reduction in gap between the official rate and the parallel market rate.
The ABCON boss advised Nigerians to avail themselves of the services of BDCs as they were sure to buy forex at controlled CBN rate.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho claims Liverpool deserve criticism for performance

Jose Mourinho rubbished concerns over Manchester United's possession stats at Liverpool by insisting Jurgen Klopp's side deserved more criticism.
United enjoyed just 35 per cent of possession in their goalless draw at Anfield - their lowest in a Premier League game for 13 years. Mourinho claimed after the game they actually had 42 per cent but match data issued by Opta stated it was 35 per cent.
David de Gea made two phenomenal saves from Emre Can and Philippe Coutinho in the second-half, having made a simple stop in the first period, but Mourinho was keen to highlight how little Liverpool worked the Spaniard over the course of the 90 minutes.
"Look, last season United won here," Mourinho said. "Liverpool had 14 shots on target and United had one. How many shots on target did Liverpool have today? Two? Two shots with 65 per cent of possession. You have to be critical of Liverpool, not of us, because 65 per cent and two shots, it is their problem, not our problem.
"I think the team was perfect. Even the goalkeeper was on holiday for 90 minutes but he had two big saves to do and he did."
Mourinho also felt Liverpool's decision to pair Jordan Henderson with Can was 'cautious', a tactic enforced on Klopp by Giorgino Wijnaldum's unavailability due to injury.
"We stopped them to play, but they also did very well by the defensive point of view," Mourinho said. "They played Can and Henderson for some reason, and they did that for 90 minutes, so they normally project more players in attack.
"They were very cautious, they kept always Can and Henderson in position, they had only one player behind the three more offensive players, so I think it was that intention to try and control us, which they also did well.
"I think it was a good performance, difficult match for us and for them and I think we controlled the game tactically and we controlled the game emotionally, and it's not easy to do both things in here.
"The result I think is acceptable, we wanted more for long periods in the game we thought that we could be positive but we didn't score and we don't score we don't win, but I think a very positive performance."

Man City target Bonucci set for new Juventus contract

Juventus are preparing a new contract for Leonardo Bonucci in order to keep him away from Manchester City 's grasp.
The 29-year-old defender was a target for City in the summer and they have continued to monitor his situation.
There have been reports in recent weeks suggesting they could make an approach for Bonucci in January – and Juventus are now set to act in order to keep him tied to the club.
Chelsea are also understood to be interested in the £50 million-rated defender.
Juventus officials are now in the process of drawing up contract extensions for Bonucci, who only signed a new agreement last summer, and striker Paulo Dybala, who scored another two goals in Saturday's 2-1 win over Udinese.
“The renewals of Dybala and Bonucci – they are two players that have long contracts,” the club's CEO Giuseppe Marotta told Premium Sport .
“[But] we are talking with them to see them [extend] again, because it is the players’ performance in the team, and because it is right to also adapt them according to the balance within the squad and their place in it.”

My wife brings her lovers home for sex, man tells court

A businessman, Kingsley Agina, has approached an Igando Customary Court in Lagos, to end his 10-year-old marriage to his wife, Obianju, accusing her of bringing men to their matrimonial home for sex. Agina, 49, told the court on Monday that his wife, with whom he had four children also, poisons his food. “My wife is promiscuous; she used to bring men into my house to sleep with them, whenever I travelled abroad for business. “There was a day I came back from my business trip, I discovered that my glass center table was broken. “I asked my daughter who broke it, she told me that it was one uncle her mother brought home that broke it. “There was also a day I discovered that my bed was shaking, I called a carpenter to come and repair it. “ But when we lifted the bed up, we saw several used tissue paper under the bed,’’ he said. The petitioner alleged that his wife used to withdraw money with his ATM card and give her boyfriends. He also accused his wife of poisoning his food. “Since year 2008, I have noticed that my food was being laced with poison, which has resulted to my deteriorating health; I could not sleep nor walk. “I have spent about N5 million on medical treatment, but I never get well in fact my health is getting worst. “My mother-in-law is a native doctor, she has a shrine; she has been the one giving her daughter poison to kill me so that they can inherit my property. “Since I became sick, my wife’s parent never called or came to my house to ask how I was feeling,’’ he said. Kinsley begged the court to dissolve the marriage on the ground of lack of love. Obianju, 35, a businesswoman, however, denied all the allegations. She said that it was her husband that was promiscuous. “My husband brings home different girls of different sizes and colours. “I once saw condom in his bag, so I went to buy him a packet of condom and gave him. “ He queried me on my action and I told him that he needs it, so that he will not contact any disease to infect me. “I have been faithful to our marital vow; I have never had sex with any other man. My husband married me a virgin at the age of 25,’’ she said. The mother of four said that she never poisoned her husband. “How will I poison the father of my children, what do I stand to gain, my hands are clean, I don’t know how poison got into his body,’’ she said. Obinaju said that the N100, 000 she withdrew with her husband’s ATM card was for the upkeep of the house. She made a fervent plea to the court not to dissolve the marriage. The respondent said that she still loves her husband. The court president, Mr Adegboyega Omilola, after listening to the couple adjourned the case to Dec. 6 for judgment.

Moses’ Hard Work Is Paying Off – Mikel

John Obi Mikel says Victor Moses’ hard work is beginning to pay off following his goal in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Leicester City.
The winger sealed the Blues’  victory in the 80th minute after a great flick from substitute Nathaniel Chalobah, giving Antonio Conte a welcome result in a week that has seen him fend off assumption over his future.
The goal is only Moses’ second in English topflight this season  but his teammate is confident he is beginning to find his feet in the Roman Army having been loaned to Liverpool, Stoke City and Liverpool in the last three seasons.
A top performance and three big points this weekend. Great to see Victor Moses’ hard work paying off, well done bro,” Mikel tweeted.

How ‘The Birth of a Nation’ Silences Black Women

Nate Parker told Anderson Cooper, “I think that Nat Turner, as a hero, what he did in history, is bigger than me. I think it’s bigger than all of us.”
Mr. Parker was talking about the film he directed, wrote and starred in, “The Birth of a Nation,” and he was responding to a question about whether the public should support the recently released drama in light of reports that he was accused of sexual assault when he was an undergraduate at Penn State in 1999. Mr. Parker noted that he was acquitted and countered that even more important than his own controversy was the weight of our cinematic moment: Nat Turner, the leader of the most canonized slave rebellion in American history has finally made it to the big screen.
But the most celebrated representations of the rebellion leader, including a white abolitionist’s 19th-century essay and Mr. Parker’s film today, have all reimagined Turner’s story as one that hinges on interracial rape. And though the race of both the villain and the victim of the rape have changed over time and have been dependent on the politics and era of the author, there has also been a strange uniformity.
In all these narratives, the rapes of women, black or white, are the prime motivation for Turner’s rebellion, while the women themselves are doubly marginalized. First, they are silenced by the violations against their bodies and then again when their victimization is cast as secondary to Turner’s heroism, their voices sidelined to the plot of Turner’s realization of his own manhood in the horror of slavery.

A literate slave and preacher, Turner led a short-lived revolt in 1831 that resulted in the deaths of more than 50 slaveholders and, afterward, his execution, as well as that of more than 50 slaves. What little we know of the events comes filtered through the publication of “The Confessions of Nat Turner, the Leader of the Late Insurrection in Southampton, Va.” by Thomas R. Gray, a local lawyer.
“For historians, Nat Turner is hard to pin down,” said Scot French, an associate professor of history at the University of Central Florida and author of a book about America’s enduring memory of Turner. He added, “Turner has been made to serve the pressing needs of each generation since,” and artists have filled in the gaps “often imbuing the story with the era’s own anxieties about gender and race.”
In “Nat Turner’s Insurrection,” an 1861 essay by the abolitionist Thomas Wentworth Higginson, Turner’s wife is a slave who belonged to a different master. But the focus is on her husband, who “had no more power to protect her than the man who lies bound upon a plundered vessel’s deck has power to protect his wife on board the pirate-schooner disappearing in the horizon.”
More than a century later, William Styron would take up the theme of sexual violence again in his 1967 novel, “The Confessions of Nat Turner.” But instead of focusing on the vulnerability of Turner’s wife and his impotency in the face of her assault, Styron erased her altogether, turning instead to a relationship between Turner and the teenager Margaret Whitehead. According to Gray, Whitehead is the only person that Turner admitted to killing in 1831. In the novel, Styron invents the story line of Turner’s having several violent sexual fantasies about the blond teenager before ultimately killing her. Explaining his choices in 1992, Styron speculated that perhaps “she had tempted him sexually, goaded him in some unknown way, and out of this situation flowed his rage.”
At first, the novel was lauded for its realistic depiction of the dehumanizing effects of slavery and won the Pulitzer Prize. This success was quickly met by a backlash. In an essay collection, black writers questioned the novel’s historical veracity and asked why Styron had omitted Turner’s black wife. The biggest blow came from the Black Anti-Defamation Association, a group of African-American actors who campaigned to prevent Hollywood studios from adapting Styron’s novel.
The group’s members included the actor Ossie Davis, who cited the lynching of thousands of black men in the South, “the rationale of such activities being that these men constituted a threat to white womanhood.” He asked, “Are we that clear of our horror at the thought of a black male lusting after white flesh?”
The group was eventually able to get the script rewritten and Styron’s title removed. But Fox (which, through its Fox Searchlight unit, is now the distributor of “The Birth of a Nation”) eventually pulled the plug on the movie, in part because some white residents of Southampton County in Virginia did not like Styron’s portrayal of slave masters.
It would take nearly 50 more years, the threat of a new boycott and a rape controversy before audiences would be able to see Nat Turner onscreen.
In many ways, Mr. Parker’s film is the redeeming antithesis of Styron’s novel. Cherry (Aja Naomi King) becomes Turner’s love interest and eventually his wife after he persuades Samuel Turner, his owner, to purchase her on the auction block and save her from the ravaging hands of other slave masters. Their romance is the main frame for the movie, making her sexual assault and brutal beating by three white men all the more devastating.
And though Turner’s political evolution is catalyzed when he travels to other plantations and witnesses slaves’ degradations, his conversion to insurrectionist is fully cemented when Cherry gives him permission to avenge her rape.
Unlike Cherry, a slave named Esther who was also raped has no dialogue in the film. It’s a choice that Gabrielle Union, who plays the role, has said she and Mr. Parker made together. All of her emotions are communicated through facial expressions.
The rape, at the hands of a white man visiting Samuel’s plantation, takes place offscreen — Esther quietly enters and exits the master’s house, her trauma implied by her sunken stare and her collapse into the arms of her husband, Hark. For Esther, we can assume only that this is the final blow to her dignity; for Hark and Turner, we see something else: their transformation into men emboldened enough to fully defy their master.
In an op-ed for The Los Angeles Times, Ms. Union explained that in Esther’s silence “she represents countless black women who have been and continue to be violated. Women without a voice, without power. Women in general. But black women in particular.”
Ms. Union, who wrote of being raped at gunpoint when she was 19, is right to point out that black women who have been sexually assaulted have been silenced throughout America’s past and present. And yet, in a film about coming to terms with the nation’s founding sin of slavery, restoring Turner to his rightful place in the pantheon of American revolutionaries, and providing a mirror to our contemporary racial protest, the representations of rape here feel eerily retrograde. It is a throwback to an era before rape victim-centered stories like Maya Angelou’s “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” (1969) or Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple” (1982), to a time when the sexual assault of black girls and women and their resistance to it was off limits.
“There should be a better understanding of the sexual economy of slavery — one that pushes us beyond simple patriarchal notions of black men’s inability to protect black women,” Crystal Feimster, a Yale history professor, said. Rape, she added, “had everything to do with sexual exploitation of enslaved women’s productive and reproductive labor.”
Their silence also has another function in “The Birth of a Nation”: It mutes their ability to act, rendering their rebellion virtually nonexistent in a film about revolt and freedom. In denying these women their revolutionary gestures, Mr. Parker risks making them objects that he, and only he, can freely move around the screen. By contrast, WGN America’s breakout hit “Underground” offers a more nuanced look at a woman’s resistance: The slave Rosalee (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) kills a white overseer who tried to attack her, and she eventually becomes an abolitionist.
“The Birth of a Nation” is also out of step with the cause it has often been associated with, Black Lives Matter, which has steadfastly resisted the model of a single charismatic male leader and has primarily been led by African-American women.
“Turner’s heroism does not have to come at the expense of black women,” Ms. Feimster said. African-Americans’ struggle for freedom “is about so much more than valorizing black manhood. We will miss so many stories, lose so many narratives, when we only see these one-dimensional characters.”

Germany records highest birth rate in decades

Germany has posted its highest birth rate in more than three decades, with an average of 1.5 births per woman recorded in 2015, data released by the country’s Federal Statistics showed on Monday.
The Statistics Office said in a statement that there was an increase of 27 births per 1,000 women in 2015, taking the overall birth rate from 1.47 in 2014 to 1.5 in 2015.
It noted that it has been the highest figure posted since 1982.
It said, “The increase is more marked among women without German citizenship, rising from 1.86 to 1.95 births per woman in 2015.
“Among women with German citizenship, the birth rate grew only marginally from 1.42 to 1.43 births per woman.”
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has singled out Germany’s birth rate, one of the world’s lowest and its ageing population as among the biggest challenges facing the country’s economy.
Report says in spite of the increased number of births in 2015, the country’s birth rate still falls significantly short of the 2.1 births per woman required to maintain a stable population.

Why JAMB scrapped use of scratch cards

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has scrapped the use of scratch cards for any of its transactions and services, describing it as “archaic,” its Registrar/Chief Executive, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, has announced.
He also demanded that the Federal Government should revert to the former system where serving vice-chancellors of universities were made chairmen of the Governing Board of JAMB.
A statement issued by the spokesperson for JAMB, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, learnt by The SUMMONS POST, said Oloyede made the announcement in Abuja in a paper he delivered during a meeting of the Association of  Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
According to him, JAMB would be using the platform of pin vending to check all forms of fraudulent practices which was prevalent with the use of scratch cards.
“The decision is as a result of its consistent subjection to fraudulent practices, the use of scratch cards is archaic and it is the aim of JAMB to also promote accountability in line with government’s zero tolerance for corruption. This new system will be accessible through the options of web payment, ATM issued cards (Visa, Verve and MasterCard), online quick teller, ATM payment, quick teller mobile application and Bank Branch case/card,” he emphasised.
Oloyede said in the olden days, the understanding was that only serving vice-chancellors were made chairmen of Governing Board of JAMB.
While appealing that government should go back to the practice from inception, Oloyede added that since the agency was a creation of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian universities, it would only be proper for them to be clearly recognised as active stakeholders to avoid any acrimony between tertiary institutions and JAMB.
He believed that going back to the old practices would “engender good synergies and harmonious relationship with a view to effectively delivering on its mandates.”

Barcelona's Luis Suarez one of world's best thanks to Liverpool - Rakitic

Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic has told The Times he believes Luis Suarez became one of the best players in the world thanks to his time at Liverpool.
Suarez joined Liverpool from Ajax in Jan. 2011 and became one of the most coveted stars in football during his three-and-a-half-year stint at Anfield.
The Uruguay international scored 82 goals in 133 appearances for the Reds and was PFA Players' Player of the Year for 2013-14 before moving to Barcelona for £75 million in summer 2014.

Paul Scholes: Manchester United lack identity, Liverpool favourites to win

Paul Scholes believes that Jose Mourinho's Manchester United remain a work in progress and Liverpool are favourites to win when the two sides meet at Anfield on Monday.
Scholes played for United throughout their period of dominance in the English football, and while the Red Devils have won the last four Premier League meetings between the two sides he feels Liverpool could now have the edge.
The former England international believes Jose Mourinho has caused confusion with his team selections since taking over from Louis van Gaal in the summer, leading to a mixed start which leaves United in sixth place in the table and three points adrift of Jurgen Klopp's team.
"If you were betting, you would be betting on Liverpool," Scholes told BBC Sport. "He [Mourinho] was not ruthless enough in the off-season. There is so much confusion about who should play.

"What I saw of Mourinho at Chelsea is that he had 13 or 14 players who played every week. He never rested players even in the League Cup or whatever competition he was in.
"With United, it is still a settling-in period. It is going to take a bit of time for them to knit together and see what they are about. Is there an identity to the team yet? I don't think there is."
When Mourinho won the title with Chelsea in 2015, he used only 19 outfield starters in the whole of the season, and he has already used 15 with United this season.

Hired killer falls in love with target, demands sex

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old suspect, Tayo Adeyemi, who confessed to have been hired to kill a female hotel lodger in the Alakija, Satellite Town area of the state.
Adeyemi, who hails from Kwara State, told our correspondent that he was arrested by the police after he sneaked into the hotel, White House, and demanded that his target, simply known as Rosemary, had sex with him so he would spare her life.
We gathered that Adeyemi, who dropped out of senior secondary school, was arrested by the Satellite Town Police Division last Thursday.
It was learnt that penultimate Wednesday, Adeyemi was brought by two gang members on a motorcycle to the hotel to kill Rosemary.
However, once Adeyemi laid his eyes on his supposed target, he reportedly fell in love with her and eventually attempted to rape her after she rebuffed his pleas to have sex with him.
Rosemary, however, raised the alarm.
The hotel management subsequently called the police, and Adeyemi was arrested.
Our correspondent learnt that one locally-made pistol and a live cartridge were recovered from Adeyemi, who had been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.
The police said the suspect belonged to a three-man gang, adding that a manhunt had been launched for the fleeing two gang members.
Adeyemi said he gave the woman N1,500 to have sex with her, adding that he fell in love with his target.
Adeyemi, who spoke in pidgin English, said, “I was working as a casual worker at a bottling company in the Apapa area before I met the gang members in the Ajegunle area. A friend, Wisdom, had invited me to stay in his house.
“His friends, who are Eiye Confraternity members, saw me and said they had a job for me. They said the job was to kill a woman. I said I could not do such a job, but they threatened to kill me and since they had guns, I was afraid.
“Finally, I was left with no option but to do their wish. One of them, Ahmed, gave me the gun and they brought me on a motorcycle to the hotel. But when I got to the hotel room and saw the woman, I fell in love with her and I had mercy on her.
“I told her that I was sent to kill her, but since I loved her, I would just have sex with her. When she declined, I offered her N1,500, and said I would take her necklaces and wristwatch away and lie to my gang members that she had been killed. But she raised the alarm.
“Everyone in the hotel called the police, the Oodua Peoples’ Congress and other vigilance groups. The hotel management called the police at the Satellite Town division.
“When my parents heard about my arrest, they were disappointed. I told them that I was being threatened by the cult members. I did not mean to kill the lady. Otherwise, I would have shot her and run away.”
