Man charged with stabbing person during church service

A 65-year-old South Carolina man is charged with stabbing the person sitting in front of him in church.
Local media outlets report Billy Lewis of Wedgefield, about 35 miles east of Columbia, is charged with attempted murder for stabbing a man during services Sunday at St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.
Authorities have not identified the victim. He was airlifted to a hospital in Columbia with severe injuries.
Witnesses told Sumter County Sheriff's deputies that Lewis stood about 9:30 a.m. and began stabbing the man in front of him in the back and head for no apparent reason. A nurse attending the service helped the victim until emergency responders arrived.
Deputies say Lewis has a history of mental health issues, but that hasn't included violence.

Bailly suffers knee injury

Jose Mourinho has admitted he fears Eric Bailly was "badly injured" during Manchester United's 4-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday.
The Ivory Coast defender was forced off with a problem on 52 minutes and was replaced by Marcos Rojo.
The Reds boss confirmed afterwards that Bailly has a knee issue which could be serious.
"He is injured and I am afraid he is badly injured," Mourinho told reporters at the post-match press conference. "In his knee, in the ligament area. He feels it is really bad."
Marouane Fellaini also appeared to pick up a knock following a high tackle from David Luiz just before half-time which earned the Chelsea defender a booking. The United midfielder did not return to the fray for the second half, with Juan Mata coming on in his place.

Wayne Rooney was absent from Sunday's match squad due to an injury he suffered in the Reds' last training session. The club captain had felt a problem during the Fenerbahce game but played on in his determination to complete 90 minutes.

Why it is too early to write off Man Utd's title hopes - Phil Neville

Manchester United made a disastrous start against Chelsea on Sunday - and got worse as the game went on.
From what I saw from United in their 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge, I don't think they are anywhere near the level that their manager Jose Mourinho wants them to be at, and it will probably take them a lot more time to get there.
But what I would add is that they have come out of a period of tough games, and they are going into a spell where their fixtures look a lot more winnable. Mourinho said so himself afterwards.

The next few weeks are an important time for them because you don't win the league by beating the clubs around you - you win it by beating everyone else.
That is what United have to do now, and they have to be more ruthless because draws will not be enough - for me, when they were held at home by Stoke at the start of October, it was almost as disappointing as Sunday's defeat.
In the next few weeks, United are at home to Arsenal but also play Burnley, Swansea and West Ham. Even if they only win those three games, then their world is a brighter place.
Yes, United need to go on a run to make up the ground they have lost but they are only six points off the top of the table and we have already seen things can change very quickly in the title race
After a great start, leaders Manchester City have gone three games without a win and look like they have lost confidence. I don't see a side playing with any rhythm or fluidity.
And it looked like Tottenham's victory over City had launched their season - but they have drawn both their league games since.
It is one of those years where there is not going to be a runaway winner, so United just have to stay in touch at the top.
What Chelsea have done recently is an example of why it is far too early to write United's season off.
After the first six games of the season, which saw them struggle defensively and lose to Liverpool and Arsenal, I was wondering what their new manager Antonio Conte was doing. His team looked like the same old Chelsea who struggled last year.
But then Conte changed to the 3-5-2 formation that has brought him such success with Juventus and Italy, and they have not looked back.
In three games since, against Hull, Leicester and now United they have scored nine goals, kept three clean sheets and picked up nine points.
All of a sudden, their forward players are playing with freedom - plus they have a solid foundation behind them with their three centre-halves plus N'Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic in midfield.
Hazard in particular has benefited because he is taking up much better positions and is having a greater effect on games for the full 90 minutes because the defensive responsibility is totally off him.

While Chelsea look like they have found the formation and system that suits them, United are still searching for theirs.
It looked like they might have found it against Liverpool at Anfield on Monday night when they were hard to beat, solid, aggressive and a threat going forward.
They still created chances against Chelsea on Sunday but pretty much everything else went out of the window - they were opened up far too easily and did not have the same aggression.
While Monday's 0-0 draw was a fantastic defensive performance, where United looked like they wanted to defend and enjoyed it, against Chelsea they did neither.
Conceding the first goal after only 30 seconds killed their game-plan but they made things worse after that by trying to chase the game.
Instead of being hard to break down it looked like they were trying to play their way out of trouble and it played into Chelsea's hands.
The Blues were not bothered about United having more possession because they knew the more they had of the more ball, the wider open they would be when they hit them on the counter-attack.
As the game went on, United took too many chances at the back and looked extremely vulnerable.
They became ragged and their players lost concentration, which is something you would never normally associate with a Mourinho side, and Chelsea's third goal epitomised United's poor defensive display.
Yes, it was a good pass from Nemanja Matic to give Eden Hazard the chance to take on Chris Smalling inside the area but you would not normally find those gaps.
So, I am not surprised that the biggest thing Mourinho was disappointed about afterwards was the mistakes that led to all four of Chelsea's goals.
It is not as though the Blues continuously opened United up. Cut out those errors, and it would have been a much tighter game.

Thirteen die in California tour bus crash

Thirteen people have been killed and more than 30 injured in southern California after a tour bus ran into the back of a lorry, media reports say.
Most of the passengers are reported to be from Latin America.
The crash happened on Interstate 10 close to the resort town of Palm Springs in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Investigators are examining the cause of the crash, which happened as the bus was bound for Los Angeles.
Rescuers used ladders to climb into the bus windows to remove bodies. Five of the injured passengers are in critical condition.

The Los Angeles Times described the crash as the deadliest in California for several decades. It said that the bus careered into the rear of the truck at high speed, mangling the front third of the bus.
Most of those who died were apparently at the front of the bus, the newspaper reported. The driver was among the fatalities.
Officials quoted by the paper said that identifying the victims could take days, because some were not carrying identity cards or had lost their belongings when they were taken to hospital.
They have warned that it may not be possible to determine exactly why the accident happened because of the driver's death.
Investigators will assess whether he might have fallen asleep or had a heart attack, in addition to determining if there was a mechanical failure or some other kind of emergency.
The westbound lanes of the interstate were closed near the crash site but are now reported to have been reopened.
According to the Desert Sun newspaper, the tour bus, run by US Holiday, was coming from Red Earth Casino, near Salton City in California.
The small Los Angeles-based company, runs trips to casinos in California and Las Vegas. The driver of the bus was one of the owners of the tour company.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration records show the company had one vehicle and one driver. According to the data the company held a satisfactory safety rating and had not been in a crash for two years.

Senior Egypt military officer shot dead near Cairo

A senior Egyptian army officer was shot dead outside his home in a Cairo suburb on Saturday, a military official and a relative told AFP.
Jihadists have killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers, mostly in the Sinai Peninsula, but such attacks on senior officers are rare.
Brigadier General Adel Ragaei, who commanded an armoured division deployed in the Sinai, died in a hail of bullets as he left his home in the Obour City suburb, sister-in-law Huda Zein Elabedine told AFP.
A little-known group called Liwa al-Thawra claimed the attack, in a message posted on Twitter.
“At 06:00 they killed him. I can’t tell you if it was six or twelve bullets. It was before he could get into his car,” Elabedine said.
A military official told AFP that the officer has been “martyred”.
He did not provide further details.
Deadly insurgency
Liwa al-Thawra said a “group of our fighters” shot the officer in the head and made off with his weapon. The claim could not be independently verified.
The apparently Islamist group had previously claimed responsibility for an attack on a police checkpoint in August, posting footage of the shooting on the internet.
Jihadists loyal to the Islamic State group are waging a deadly insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula, which borders Israel and the Gaza Strip.
They have also claimed attacks in or near Cairo, including the abduction and murder of a Croatian oil worker and the bombing of the Italian consulate in 2015.
Other lesser-known groups have also conducted attacks since the army overthrew Islamist president Mohammed Morsi in 2013 and cracked down on his supporters.
One group, which calls itself the Hasam Movement, has claimed several attacks in or near Cairo, including the assassination of a police officer and the attempted killing of a senior prosecutor.

AC Milan beat Juventus for the first time in four years

Manuel Locatelli's goal helped AC Milan beat Juventus for the first time since November 2012 and close the gap at the top of Serie A to two points.
The 18-year-old midfielder struck a spectacular, powerful effort from the edge of the box into the top corner.
Earlier, Juve thought they had taken the lead when Miralem Pjanic's long-range free-kick went into the net.
After a lengthy delay, as the officials discussed whether a Juventus player was offside, it was disallowed.
Juventus piled on the pressure in the second half and almost equalised with the last kick of the game.
German midfielder Sami Khedira unleashed a long-range effort which looked destined for the top corner only for 17-year-old Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to produce a spectacular one-hand diving save.

UNILORIN PhD graduand dies on convocation day

A postgraduate student of Arabic at the University of Ilorin, AbdulHafeez Adedimeji, died on Saturday, the day he was to receive his doctorate at a convocation.
Sources told our correspondent that another doctoral graduand died shortly before the ceremony.
Soon after the Dean, Faculty of Post Graduate Studies, Prof. Badmas Yusuf, informed attendants of the graduands’ demise, a gloomy atmosphere enveloped the lively UNILORIN auditorium where the 32nd graduation activities were being held.
Adedimeji, who until his death was a lecturer at the Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State, was among 166 receiving doctoral degrees at the convocation.
He was said to have arrived in Ilorin for the convocation not long before his death.
The Vice Chancellor of UNILORIN, Prof. Abdulganiyu Ambali, said 67 of the 6,069 graduands for first degrees were first class, adding that it was an improvement on last year’s 41 first-class graduands.
He explained that 1,505 merited second-class upper division, compared to 1,234 last year; 3,200, second-class lower division; 1,124, third class; and 70, pass.
He stated that 1,903 postgraduate students, 8,038 first degree students and 68 diploma students graduated on Friday and Saturday, being the first two days of the 32nd convocation.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the Visitor to the university, assured Nigerians that the country would overcome the ongoing economic recession.
Buhari, who was represented by the Deputy Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Prof. Chiedu Mafiana, said recession was not peculiar to Nigeria, adding that many other countries in the world were facing similar challenges.
According to the President, the recession was brought about by the collective failure of Nigerians as a people, dependency on oil exports to the exclusion of other products, insatiable appetite for foreign goods and services, including importation of food, corruption and lack of proper planning.
The President said his administration was doing everything possible to restructure the economy and change the nation’s ways of doing things.
The Visitor reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to steer the attitude and values of  the citizens, especially the youth, towards positive direction.
He stated that the responsibilities and obligations of university teachers in achieving this goal could not be overstated.
The NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Rasheed Adamu, who was also represented by Mafiana, stated that he was saddened and dismayed by what he termed the growing tension and animosity in various university campuses.

Five Things That Make Women’s Breasts Sag Quickly

The breast seems to be one part of a woman’s body that means different things to different people, and that could be the reason why women pay so much attention to it.
Beyond the fact that it is the source of food for a newborn baby, men see it as more of sex organ that makes sex: more pleasurable, and for women, apart from its being important for breastfeeding after childbirth and being a body part that enhances their outlook, it is one of the routes to sexual satisfaction, as findings have shown that handling the breasts is one of the quickest ways for women to reach orgasm.

Meanwhile, it has also been found that the firmness or otherwise of those two soft, protruding organs influence women’s self esteem, and they also impact on how attractive they are to men.

The breasts tend to sag with age and after childbirth and or breastfeeding. But be that as it may, there are some human activities that could increase the likelihood of sagging.
So, given the much importance men and women attach to the firmness of a woman’s breasts, it seems helpful for women to know how best the breasts should be treated to avoid sagging (quickly).
Mismanaged breastfeeding: It is largely assumed that a woman’s breasts tend to sag after pregnancy and breastfeeding, and this is entirely understandable because of the release of some hormones and the secretion of milk which could increase the size of the breasts. In fact, some people assume that with the way the baby draws the Tips in the process of suckling the mother’s breasts, the breasts would lose firmness and end up being droopy afterwards. But those assumptions may not be true. According to a gynaecologist, Dr. Bolanle Shukra-Okesina, women can retain the firmness of their breasts even after breastfeeding, depending on how the woman manages the breasts during and after the period.
She said, “Breastfeeding does not make the breasts to sag. If the woman uses the appropriate bra size and she takes enough of fluid, especially water, when breastfeeding, the breasts will not sag, even after breastfeeding. Also, during pregnancy, the woman is expected to change the size of her bra as the breasts increase in size. She is supposed to use the appropriate size at every stage because the breasts need to be supported by a firm bra.
“When the milk stops after breastfeeding, the breasts would on their own go back to their normal size. So, if the woman does the right thing, the breasts have no reason to sag.
Crash diet – This factor particularly applies to women who are watching their weight and are doing everything to lose some weight, especially people who are obese, because according to Shukra-Okesina, losing weight could make the breasts to sag. She said in the process of losing weight, a breast would also give up its fat and some ligaments and if the diet is deficient of fat and some calcium-building elements, it would eventually sag. “If a woman who is watching her diet is not taking balanced diet, perhaps to lose some fat, it can make the breast to sag,” she explained.
Furthermore, a breast surgeon and president of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Michael Edwards, in his piece on Women’sHealth, said, “Each time a woman gains and loses weight, breast tissue becomes slack.” He also believes that excessive exposure to the ultraviolet rays from the sun could take its toll on the breasts by stretching out the connective tissues and damaging the skin.
Wrong bra size: One other factor that has been found to influence the firmness or otherwise of the breasts is whether women use the bra that is appropriate for their breast size. According to the gynaecologist, the breasts would likely sag if women with (relatively) big breasts do not use the size of bra that can lift the breasts and keep them in position.
And for women who wear the kind of bras that make the breasts to shake, perhaps to appear buxom, Edwards warned that the more the breasts bounce around, the more the skin of the breasts and collagen would be stressed, eventually leading to sagging. Thus, women should wear bras that keep the breasts intact and in shape.
Smoking: This act has been found to have serious adverse effects on the human system, especially the functionality or efficiency of some internal organs, but not many would know when women smoke, it tends to have some effects on their breasts. Edwards had this to say, “Any amount of smoking weakens and ages skin by decreasing the blood supply to the skin surface, and the breasts are not spared in this.” and according to a consultant endocrinologist, Dr. Olamoyegun Michael, smoking weakens the ligaments that hold the breasts, which could ultimately lead to sagging.
Wrong exercise: No doubt, exercise is good for the body, and people across all age groups are advised to engage in it. In fact, there are exercises that help to make the breasts firm, including push-ups and lifting dumbbells. But it has been found that some exercises are inimical to the firmness of the breasts, especially running. Findings show that when a woman is running and she is not wearing the appropriate bra, like a fitted sports bra, the breasts would naturally be moving up and down, which can lead to the breakdown of the connecting tissues, leading to sagging eventually. For those who are able to, findings have also shown that weight lifting also helps to make the breasts firm as it strengthens the muscles underlying the breasts. So, if you have the capacity, try it.
There are myths surrounding breasts sagging, and among them are excessive suckling or handling and abstinence from bra. But according to Olamoyegun, suckling the breasts or handling them does not lead to sagging.
In effect, doing the needful while breastfeeding, eating balanced diet and in reasonable quantity, avoiding too much exposure to sunlight, abstinence from smoking and doing the right exercises could reduce the likelihood of sagging.

Barcelona captain, Andres Iniesta, could be out for eight weeks

Barcelona captain Andres Iniesta will be out for six to eight weeks after injuring knee ligaments in the dramatic win over Valencia.
The midfielder was injured by an Enzo Perez tackle after 14 minutes of the 3-2 win and left on a stretcher.
He could miss the rest of the Champions League group games and is definitely out of the match at Manchester City on 1 November.
Barca won thanks to a late Lionel Messi penalty, his second goal of the game.

Didier Drogba fined for refusing to play for Montreal Impact

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has been fined for refusing to play for Montreal Impact last weekend.
Drogba, 38, did not play against Toronto, with coach Mauro Biello saying after the game that the forward "didn't accept a place on the bench".
Major League Soccer have fined Drogba an unspecified amount "for his failure to appear".
In a separate ruling, New York City defender Diego Martinez was fined for swearing at a ballboy.
Martinez was accused of directing a "homophobic slur" at a DC United ballboy last week but the league said that an investigation had found no evidence of that, only of using an obscenity.
Drogba's Montreal, who are fifth in the Eastern Conference, play New England Revolution on Sunday.
Drogba, who left Chelsea in July 2015, has been used as a substitute in two of the Impact's previous four games.
The former Ivory Coast international has scored 10 goals in 21 appearances this season.

FG set for trial of S’Court Justices, 7 others

The Federal Government is set for the prosecution of two Supreme Court Justices and seven other judges in spite of the memos written by three of them to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed.
The charges against the judges were ready at press time, following the conclusion of investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS).
Also, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has started probing the accounts of six judges of the Federal High Court who are undergoing interrogation.
The anti-graft commission has allegedly discovered payment of bribe sums/financial assistance into the accounts of two of the six judges.
Investigation revealed that the DSS has gathered tons of evidence against the judges.
Those under investigation are two Supreme Court judges namely Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and Inyang Okoro; the suspended Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin Division, Justice Mohammed Ladan Tsamiya, who was picked up in Sokoto; Justice Adeniyi Ademola (Federal High Court); the Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike;  Justice Kabiru Auta of Kano State High Court;  Justice Muazu Pindiga (Gombe State High Court);  Justice Bashir Sukola and  Justice Ladan Manir from the Kaduna State High Court.
Of the nine judges, the NJC has recommended sanctions for Justice Mohammed Ladan Tsamiya; the erstwhile Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice I. A. Umezulike; and Justice Kabiru Auta.
A source said: “The Federal Government is going ahead with the trial of the nine judges. The charges and evidence against them are ready. I can tell you that the DSS has conducted diligent investigation.
“Even if you look at the list, only three out of the nine judges have joined issues with some people. But these issues have nothing to do with the overwhelming evidence against them.”
The source added: “The trial will enable Nigerians to know how the sting operations were conducted, the findings of DSS and the charges.
“If a judge alleges that DSS operatives planted money in his residence, did they also lodge cash in his account(s)?”
NBA demands justice
It was further learnt that snippets of the findings were presented to the executives of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) with  the bar deciding that justice must run its full course.
The bar has also asked that the judges being probed should step aside.
“This investigation was tight and it is in the public interest for the trial to begin as soon as possible,” the source said.
The six judges of the Federal High Court who were interrogated during the week and whose accounts are being scrutinised by the EFCC are Justices Mohammed Nasir Yunusa; Hyeladzira Ajiya Nganjiwa; Musa Haruna Kurya; Agbadu James Fishim; Uwani Abba Aji; and Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia.
A source in the anti-graft agency said: “We are looking into the accounts of all the judges so far quizzed by our team, based on petitions and preliminary investigations.
“It is too early to disclose our findings. But the affected judges have made statements in line with the law.”
The National Judicial Council (NJC) had in February sanctioned Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia for misconduct on the bench.
The Council also barred her from elevation to the Court of Appeal or taking any judicial appointment.
A statement by the Acting Director of Information of NJC, Mr. Soji Oye said: “The NJC, under the chairmanship of Justice Mahmud Mohammed, at its meeting on February 24 and 25, 2016 decided to warn Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia and put her on the “watch-list” of the council for the next four years.
“The judge will also not be considered for any elevation to the Court of Appeal or any ad hoc judicial appointment till her retirement from the Bench.
“The decision was sequel to the petition written against her by Victoria Ayeni, alleging misconduct and injustice on the part of Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia for failing to deliver judgment in Suit No FHC/AB/CS/31/2011, a pre-election matter between Victoria A. A. Ayeni and Olusola Sonuga and two Ors.
“She was also alleged to have adjourned the pre-election matter severally until the termination of the life span of the Ogun State House of Assembly. The decision of the Council on Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia is with immediate effect.”
Two of the six judges were alleged to have received over N2.75 million bribe from two senior lawyers Rickey Tarfa (SAN) and Joseph Nwobike (SAN).
The EFCC had on March 9, 2016 arraigned Tarfa and Nwobike before Lagos High Court on allegations of bribery and offering gratification to a public official.
“Nwobike and Tarfa are facing criminal prosecution for allegedly offering gratification to Federal High Court judges to restrain them from exercising the duties of their office.
“Subsequent investigation revealed that the two Judges allegedly received sums of money from the two senior lawyers severally.”
Judge apologises to convict
Meanwhile, a judge of the Federal High Court was alleged to have sneaked into Kuje Prison in the Federal Capital Territory to apologise to an inmate for wrongful conviction.
A reliable source said: “The judge disguised and went to the prison yard on September 13. The convict was jailed for being in possession of cocaine.
“But the Federal High Court judge met with the convict and expressed regrets for wrongful conviction.
“He said he knew that the convict was a victim of a set up and his conscience was troubling him.
“He offered to assist the convict in whatever manner to make his stay in prison comfortable.
“But security agencies have picked up the visit of the judge and they have started investigating it.”

Lagos set to impose death sentence on kidnappers

Lagos State Government may soon join the growing number of states such as Edo, Ogun and Anambra that have imposed death sentence on kidnappers.
According to a private member bill sponsored by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, any person, who kidnaps, abducts, detains, captures or takes another person by any means or tricks with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will commit an offence, and liable on conviction to death sentence.
The bill went through a public hearing on yesterday at the Lateef jakande Auditorium within the Assembly premises with some stakeholders in attendance.
Attempt to kidnap is also criminalised under the bill and it was suggested that such a person would be committed to life imprisonment.
Also, the bill is against false representation to release a kidnapped or abducted person under Section 4, and this attracts seven years imprisonment.
Furthermore, the bill provides that any person, who knowingly or wilfully allows or permits his premises, building or a place belonging or occupied to which he has control of, to be used for the purposes of keeping a person kidnapped is guilty of an offence under the law and liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment of 14 years without an option of fine.
A legal practitioner, Mr Richard Komolafe from the United Action for Change (UAC), who spoke at the stakeholders meeting, commended the bill but said that death sentence was no longer fashionable all over the world.
Komolafe said:”Hanging itself is inhuman by conventions as against life imprisonment. I appreciate this bill, it is very timely, but we hope it will be passed in time.”
He, however, urged the lawmakers to find a way of not getting genuine rescuers from being roped in cases of pretentious kidnap.
Another stakeholder, who is the Director of Legal Drafting in the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Yejide Kolawole, who also commended the bill, said that it was essential that element of conspiracy and attempt to kidnap be added in the bill.
“I suggest 21 years imprisonment for conspiracy to kidnap, depending on the level of involvement. However, seven years penalty for section 4 is too mild. I suggest 20 years to deter those who would want to engage in the crime.
“On Section 5, anyone who instigates kidnapping should be given a stiffer penalty of 25 years, though the person does not participate overtly in act.
“On Section 7, owners of a building used to aid kidnapping should have a higher punishment than mere forfeiture of property,” she said.
Also, a Chief Magistrate in Lagos State, Mrs Seri Sholebo said that it was fundamental to add conspiracy to kidnapping, stressing that the ministry had not been able to convict offenders on conspiracy since 2011.
Sholebo however, suggested 180 days window for trials of offenders rather than the stipulated 60 days due to anticipated delay in handling the cases.
A Director in the Lagos State Office of Public Defender (OPD), Mr. Borokini Fatai wanted to know what could happen if the trial could not be concluded within 60 days, as he said that a defence counsel could ask for the withdrawal of the matter after the stipulated number of days.

EPFL ends agreement with UEFA on Champions League dates

The European Professional Football Leagues (EPFL) have voted to end a Memorandum of Understanding that had prohibited domestic matches from being broadcast at the same time as Champions League fixtures, the organisation announced in a statement on Friday.
The group claimed that UEFA has left it “no other option” than to strike down the agreement given recent decisions European football’s governing body has taken.
In August, it made a series of reforms that favoured the continent’s top leagues and the most popular clubs.
UEFA awarded four automatic Champions League places to the continent’s top four leagues. It also took back the 11th and 12th ranked leagues’ right to an automatic qualifier, and changed prize money awards to favour the competition’s most successful clubs.
“The EPFL is of the opinion that the cooperation with UEFA for the development of European professional club football is essential,” the statement read.
“However, the UEFA Executive Committee’s recent decision related to European club competitions leaves the EPFL with no other option than to terminate the current Memorandum of Understanding between the two organisations.”
The EPFL’s MoU will end in March 2017.

Bayelsa assembly rejects grazing reserves bill

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has rejected a bill before the National Assembly for the establishment of grazing reserves in states for herdsmen across the country.
The members of the state assembly were said to have unanimously rejected the bill at a plenary.
The development reportedly followed a motion moved by a member representing Ogbia Constituency 1, Dr. Mitema Obordor.
The state lawmakers therefore called on the National Assembly to urgently discard the bill due to its unpopularity among Nigerians.
Obordor, in the motion, raised the alarm over allegations of unlawful encroachment, destruction of crops and farmlands in some parts of the state by herdsmen.
He mentioned some of the communities having issues with herdsmen as Agudama-Epie, Okutukutu, Gbarain, Tombia, Amassoma, Elebele, Otuasega and some areas in Kolokuma/Opokuma and Sagbama.
He lamented some of the nefarious activities of herdsmen such as alleged massacre of innocent persons and raping of women in Benue, Ekiti and Enugu states.
Obordor noted that herdsmen, had by their acts, exhibited impunity, lawlessness and threats to security.
The lawmaker stated that the motion was moved “bearing in mind the peculiar nature of the riverside communities. The development has left our people to manage the remaining upland portion for farm settlement and production of food for livelihood.”
He noted that his motion also took into cognisance the resolutions adopted at the recent Inter-Parliamentary Session of the South-South and South-East zones held recently in Imo State.
Obodor stated that it was dangerous to allow uncontrolled movements of cows, stressing that even though the country needed to diversify to agriculture, it should not be carried out at the detriment of lives and property.
The lawmakers adopted Obordor’s motion and resolved to “prohibit stray animals and grazing of cattle from one location to another through farmlands, thereby causing damage, health hazards, obstruction of vehicles and human traffic.”

NYSC: Corp members to get free accommodation in Jigawa

The Jigawa State government has promised to construct lodges for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in each of the 27 local government areas of the State in 2017.
Head of the State Civil Service (HoS), Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa, made the disclosure on Thursday after meeting with the executives of the state chapter of the Muslim Corps members Association of Nigeria (MCAN) in Dutse, the Jigawa capital.
Inuwa disclosed that the lodges would be 10 bedrooms each to be situated in the headquarters of the councils.
The HoS explained that the government decided to build the lodges considering the accommodation challenge faced by NYSC members serving in Jigawa.
He said government had directed the 27 LGAs to make budgetary provision for the project in their 2017 budget.
Speaking, Head of the association, Malam Muktar Yakubu, appealed to the state government to assist them with a bus for easy mobilisation and discharge of their duties.
Meanwhile, the first batch of three hundred and ten youth entrepreneurs have benefited from loans under the CBN-NYSC-Heritage Bank Youth Entrepreneurship Development Programme, YEDP.
The funds were disbursed to the beneficiaries, comprising serving and ex-corps members, at a ceremony held at the CBN Headquarters, Abuja.

Buhari is no hater of women – Adeosun

Finance minister Kemi Adeosun has dismissed insinuations of President Muhammadu Buhari being a hater of women even as she Friday said that the administration has pumped in the last four months pumped an unprecedented N720 billion to boost infrastructure.
Mrs. Adeosun who disowned dates attributed to her on when the nation would come out of recession said economic growth would depend on global oil prices and how the economy responds to the spending stimulus fashioned out by the administration. Among the spending plans she enumerated was the Affordable Housing Programme aimed at boosting home ownership in the country. She said the contractors for the programme moved to site this week.
Mrs. Adeosun spoke on a BBC programme Friday evening.
Asked if the president was a misogynist, she said: “I think the fact that he has appointed women into very senior positions says his view about women. I work with him very closely and I don’t see any misogynistic tendencies in him; in fact if for anything, I think he is very much in favour of women.”
On the administration’s plans to recover the economy from recession, she said: “We have released about N720 billion in about four months and that is the highest ever and we are still going to do more in investing in infrastructure because that is what has held Nigeria back.”
“For a number of years and almost for a whole generation we were moving in the wrong direction depending on oil, we didn’t invest in infrastructure. And everyone has known about the power challenges in Nigeria, the road challenges, the health challenges and the only thing that was just keeping us up was the high oil price and the high oil price has been stripped away and we have been laid bare, so it is going to take a bit of time to recover.”
Asked to reiterate a time when the country will slip out of recession, she said: “I didn’t say six months, I have refused to give a date and what I have said consistently is that we have to invest in infrastructure to get growth back again. Who is going to predict when we are going to come out of recession?
“It is a function of many things. It is a function of global oil prices and how the economy responds to the spending stimulus. What we have said consistently is that if we stick to the plan that growth will return.
“We are doing the Affordable Housing Programme and the contractors have just moved to site this week and that is aimed at addressing the cost of living issue.
“We understand the peoples pain and what we are trying to do is spend our money in a way that addresses that pain,” she said.

At N300/dollar, no need for fresh devaluation – Emir Sanusi

The Emir of Kano and former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Muhammad Sanusi II, has said that the naira, at 300 to a dollar, needs no fresh devaluation.
Sanusi said all the CBN needs to do is to make the Bureau de Change (BDC) segment of the market liquid, and watch the gap between official and parallel market close, with investors bringing in more forex.
“My public position is that if the Central Bank can improve on its management of foreign exchange, provide liquidity to the parallel market, get a convergence between the BDC rate and the official rate, also keep these yields where they are, that will help to attract the foreign exchange that we need to stabilize in the short term,” he told Daily Trust.
“While I think the naira is undervalued, certainly if you look at the purchasing power parity, when you look at the nominal exchange rates, when you look at the rate of inflation, it stands to agree that even at 300, the naira will be slightly undervalued.
“Fundamentally, I think the exchange rate is where it’s supposed to be. What is obviously the problem, is not the fundamentals, it is the managing of the regime, so that people will have the confidence that we are indeed having a flexible exchange regime and also that we are closing the gap between the official and the parallel market rates, and that could only happen when we have liquidity within that segment.”
He said the central bank decided not to sell forex to BDCs, adding that the segment of the market where the naira is trading at 470 to 490 is a very shallow segment, which however has impact on the entire market.
“What you said is for N470-N490 to the dollar might be a very small volume in transactions, but it does have the impact of creating the impression that it creates a huge gap.
“So if we could just provide liquidity to that segment and close that gap it will help a lot. But in terms of where the naira is today, there is no need for any further devaluation as far as the fundamentals are concerned but we have to take steps to address confidence.
“We spent one year defending an exchange rate regime that everybody knew would not work. It has been tried by Chavez in Venezuela, tried by Mugabe in Zimbabwe and Rawlings in Ghana.
“It never works so everybody knows it will not work for Nigeria, unless oil prices miraculously rebound. So the real issue is the confidence issue, which is convincing the world that we had an error in the past and it has been corrected now.”
The local currency was trading at 450, 550, and 495 to the dollar, pound and euro, respectively, at the parallel market.

Buhari’s daughter, Oby Ezekwesili at war over Chibok girls

Hadiza Buhari-Bello, one of the daughters of President Muhammadu Buhari, has faulted a statement credited to a former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, that she is using her Africa Support and Empowerment Initiative, AFRISEI, to infringe on the franchise of the Bring Back Our Girls group.
The BBOG advocacy group via statement jointly signed by Aisha Yesufu and Oby Ezekwesili had dissociated BBOG group from a fund-raising event organised by Hadiza Buhari-Bello, daughter of Nigeria’s president.
The event tagged: “Official Inauguration and Signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on the Chibok Girls Endowment Project”, took place at the Peace Corps of Nigeria premises, Abuja, on Oct. 17, with the #BringBackOurGirls inscription on the backdrop.
While demanding an immediate retraction and unreserved apology from the organisers of the event, the BBOG also urged the general public to disregard attempts at linking the group to the event.
However, in a statement co-signed by the President and Secretary of the NGO, Hajiya Hadiza Buhari-Bello and Don Uche, respectively stated that contrary to Yesufu and Ezekwesili’s allegation, AFRISEI did not need to lean on the BBOG to be of service to the Chibok Girls.
They maintained that they had no reason “to steal anything from BBOG or use its name to achieve any advantage.
“The Africa Support and Empowerment Initiative has its own defined objectives and that it didn’t need to steal anybody’s ideas to operate in line with its own objectives’’.
While praising the activities of the BBOG to raise and sustain awareness about the plight of the kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls, the President’s daughter said that their organisation had broader objectives beyond the Chibok girls.
They said though the Chibok girls were within the priority of their organisation, their commitments to humanitarian causes did not end with Chibok schoolgirls.
“Given the size of the problem at hand, the more organisations we have assisting Chibok and other devastated communities, the better for the country,’’ they said.
According to them, as a charitable organisation, AFRISEI is committed to empowering the youth and the less privileged in the area of job creation and skill acquisition.
“It is also committed to supporting the education of the less privileged students, giving material support to the downtrodden; the internally displaced persons.
“AFRISEI is committed to educating the masses to discourage unhealthy practices such as child trafficking, child abuse, child labour and gender discrimination’’.
The AFRISEI president and secretary said there was no law that prevented their organisation from assisting the Chibok schoolgirls, adding that as a charity organisation, they offered help to people in distress, including the Chibok girls and the Boko Haram victims.
They noted that AFRISEI was duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission and issued certificate of incorporation on July 14, and hence would never engage in illegal activities by stealing someone else’s franchise.
